This is from Billboard: "This song is about the ways we look for love in things that are perhaps not love, and how attempts to feel less alone can sometimes isolate us more,” Florence Welch says of the new track. “I guess I made myself more vulnerable in this song to encourage connection, because perhaps a lot more of us feel this way than we are able to admit. Sometimes when you can’t say it, you can sing it.”

"You make a fool of death with your beauty..." Who writes poetry like that? I'm a 53 year old man who's largely into Death Metal and other extreme genres of music and I get emotional and tear-eyed listening to Florence. Furthermore, I have a home studio and make music, but when I listen to Florence + The Machine, I suddenly feel quite devoid of any talent. She's a true artist who can touch the soul and make (at least some of us) more desiring of living our lives to the fullest. She's a phenomenon.

For me this song is about being insecure about your "imperfections" and thinking that people wont like the way you are, so you distance yourself from them and just sit in your room alone("looking at you phone"). I think shes talking to her young self, what she thought was love and the way she couldnt really get it, only from drugs and from strangers when being on stage. She resticted herself because of that thought of being rejected, but now shes free(you ca even see that from the way she dances, its so free, emotional and just for herself, without caring about what anyone thinks), she learned how to love herself. Hunger is representation of desire of love(or strive to perfection),and we dont have to starve ourselves in fear, we can love ourselves and well find that some people like us just the way we are...

As an anorexia survivor, I can relate... This song hit me hard the first time I heard it. Just by listening the beginning: "At 17 i started to starve myself/ I thought that love was a kind of emptiness". I suffered from anorexia for 3 years of my life, and I remember that period as the worst I've ever experienced in my entire existence. The way she dances in the video reminds me of the liberating sensation I felt when I was fully healed. When I started to love myself again, free in mind from unhealthy thoughts, seeing myself as a bird, able to fly again, far in the distance from the mental cage I built with my own hands. A beautiful song that means a lot to me and to many people out there. I love Florence ❤️

It's amazing to see how she has evolved personally and musically after being in the scene for almost 10 years. The best thing about this song is the fact how it contains the lively vocals of "Lungs", the darker lyricism of "Ceremonials", and the organic production of "HBHBHB"; complimented by a newfound maturity in her presence. Florence is finally back to bless us with some great music...! ♥

The beauty about the statue in this video, if you look at it, is that it's gender is mixed. It has both feminine and masculine features, and it is also "broken." Around it are statues of men in the background, with very beautifully carved masculine features, but this statue stands alone and it's a perfect example of sexual awakening. The yearn to be different, to expose that hunger and *feel* it. What a poetic scene to see....
@TheriusT5 жыл бұрын

@xovvo39502 жыл бұрын
It's not just that the statue is broken, it's "wounded" in the side and on the palms. The statue is supposed to be Jesus. Hence why in the latter half of the video the statue is at the center of s many scenes of worship. It's also important to note that the statue isn't so much gender mixed as...portraying Jesus as a trans man. Listen, for a couple centuries now, the mythology is that Jesus was born of Mary, who was unmarried and in these recent centuries did not conceive Jesus with a man. So unless God worked a Miracle Y chromosome (or androgen sensitivity), any child produced by parthenogenesis is going to be X0, XX, XXX, etc. and more than likely AFAB. But we also know from the same tradition that Jesus was a man. and this is a pretty reasonable reading given how much queerness of other kinds are on display in the video (pretty much no one aside from a few scattered characters in the beginning aren't coded as some sort of Queer, so strongly it's barely even subtext). We're meant to understand the Queerness suffused throughout the work.

I don't really understand what she means with that about love being emptiness. Because I thought that hunger was related to sexual desire but then she started to talk about love in drugs and love in the stage and I get that the meaning is deeper than that, but I still don't understand what does she mean with "I thought love was some kind of emptiness". Emptiness because you don't find somebody? or because you don't love you? Like if she was seeking for love and that was her hunger?

SuperCelia2 hmmm just a guess but maybe before she had no real concept of love... she had only seen love as abuse or lust or the false love she talked about on stage. So it was empty to her, something that required her to give something inside her away.
@Sydney-sc8sb6 жыл бұрын
i think that because she writes about an eating disorder right before that line, i imagine that self-love to her was being hungry, being LITERALLY empty of food. love was being empty. that might just be surface level but the deeper meaning could be one of the interpretations above :)

Even now, two years after that I get tears in my eyes writing this and remembering all that. I just wanted to say thank you, that was a much needed hug.

Lyrics🎶: At seventeen, I started to starve myself I thought that love was a kind of emptiness And at least I understood then the hunger I felt And I didn't have to call it loneliness [Chorus] We all have a hunger We all have a hunger We all have a hunger We all have a hunger [Pre-Chorus] Tell me what you need, oh, you look so free The way you use your body, baby, come on and work it for me Don't let it get you down, you're the best thing I've seen We never found the answer but we knew one thing [Chorus] We all have a hunger We all have a hunger We all have a hunger We all have a hunger [Post-Chorus] And it's friday night and it's kicking in And I can't trust, they're gonna crucify me Oh, you and all your vibrant youths How could anything bad ever happen to you? You make a fool of death with your beauty, and for a moment [Verse 2] I thought that love was in the drugs But the more I took, the more it took away And I could never get enough I thought that love was on the stage You give yourself to strangers, you don't have to be afraid Then it tries to find a home with people, oh, and I'm alone Picking it apart and staring at your phone [Chorus] We all have a hunger We all have a hunger We all have a hunger We all have a hunger [Pre-Chorus] Tell me what you need, oh, you look so free The way you use your body, baby, come on and work it for me Don't let it get you down, you're the best thing I've seen We never found the answer but we knew one thing [Chorus] We all have a hunger We all have a hunger We all have a hunger We all have a hunger [Post-Chorus] And it's friday night and it's kicking in And I can't trust, they're gonna crucify me Oh, you and all your vibrant youths How could anything bad ever happen to you? Florence and the machine is waaaaaay beyond or separated from any band right now. Florence Welch still does her own thing as she keeps on sounding so original and her voice is just the cherry in top the cake :)

Antonio Torres Finally! Thank you! It kinda bugs me that a lot of people on the internet are too oblivious that Florence + the machine is a band, NOT a solo artist. She's with five other members. Yes, I love everything about Florence and the music they arranged together as a group. Looking forward to THEIR fourth album, "High as Hope", which is set to release on June 29th. 😍😊

Oh my god! Absolutely beautiful energy and music as always. I'm so happy she's back, I've missed her artistry! And that ending reminded me of one of my favorite poems by Percy Shelly, "Ozymandias"!! I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said-“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair! Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

What I draw from this: generations of people are enamored by the figure with holes and cracks in. Even though she is broken she is beloved. Flowers grow from her wounds. “The way you use your body, baby, cmon-work it for me; don’t let it get you down, you’re the best thing I’ve seen” Body positivity? Love yourself? Florence has a fern growing from her hand; new life growing from her own brokenness? We see the figure withstand the test of time until there is nothing left; it stands alone in a vast desert. It’s survived and it’s more beautiful than ever. It’s found its own beauty. “How many die so that you can feel loved?” Generations pass before the figure understands its own beauty. We can not feel love without loving ourselves. It doesn’t matter how beautiful we are to others if we don’t believe it, too. Lyrically I hear that Florence was always looking for a love-in a man, onstage (but people were watching her through their phone screens instead of being present and picking apart her words, like I am doing now)-but it all let her down. She learned that love was inside of herself. Together the lyrics and visuals tell us that love is in ourselves. We must love ourselves. Isn’t that something?
