I feel so bad, my family was heavily impacted by Hurricane Michael. (Both by family members being stubborn/nearly dying because they refused to evacuate and the fact that their town was mostly reduced to debris.) I really, REALLY hope they learned from that past storm and that history won’t repeat itself. Most of the people in that area are extremely poor and are still being affected by Michael’s impact. The forests that once sheltered them were splintered or completely flattened, the homes that were already falling apart are not going to handle this very well at all.

People drastically underestimate how well-prepared Florida is for these things, it's not like Texas refusing to winterize their grid, the buildings and infrastructure are built for hurricanes because we literally couldn't live here otherwise. Not to mention we get a week or two of warning for our only type of natural disaster. I'll take hurricanes over earthquakes, wildfires, and freak tornadoes any day.

storm surge is when the ocean itself rises because of the extreme low pressure in the eye of the hurricane. imagine a raised lump of ocean under the hurricane. storm surge happens because where the hurricane goes, the raised ocean goes with it. storm surge measurements DO NOT INCLUDE WAVES, it is measuring the base level of the water compared to what it normally is

The amount of water that gets moved can be pretty similar but storm surges are typically a bit slower, taking maybe an hour or two to get as far as a tsunami does in a few minutes. Makes the initial impact less destructive, but the steady flooding still cuts off escape routes far faster than one might assume.

@@Squigglyboi That's a good comparison. A tsunami can quickly wash out infrastructure and drown people and critically injure them as they crash into debris and die in collapsing buildings. I think the tsunami flowing back out to sea is also extremely dangerous because it can drag people with it it. Storm surges are dangerous because most people don't stock emergency floatation devices and an extra boat in and at their homes. Couple that with the disorientation of hurricane force rain and winds, and you've got a pretty solid risk for death.
