Hurricane Milton is going to be "deadly and catastrophic", officials are warning, as millions leave Florida ahead of the storm's arrival
Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis, has been speaking in what will be his last briefing before Hurricane Milton makes landfall late on Wednesday night.
“51 counties remain under a state of emergency but authorities are "prepared and we will respond”, he said.
He adds "there is still hope" Milton could weaken further before it reaches Florida after it was downgraded to a category four storm earlier by the National Hurricane Center.

There are a lot of stupid people walking this earth. Those are the people that make up 95+% of fatalities. If you’re in a low lying area & the surge is that big you’ll drown inside your house. After Katrina in NOLA they found hundreds of people in their attics that tried to cut a hole through their roof to get out and couldn’t.

There is no greater dichotomy in this world than my fellow Americans in Florida, who by and large are going to be uninsured when the storm destroys their homes as corporate greed runs rampant among a world forever changed by a warming climate. Insurance companies are still denying claims for Hurricane Ian, and there is no justice for those who will lose everything to storm surge which is not covered under their policies. Florida exists as a resort now, where the wealthy leave by private jet when convenient and return when the serving class have rebuilt their roads, clinics, hospitals and restaurants for them.

With all the book burnings under Governor Ron DeSantis and the attacks on civil liberties and personal freedoms, Florida is already LOST. And the reason why Florida had to get all this help from these other states is because this stupid son of a b**** send everybody in Florida up to North Carolina because he wanted to score political points and now there's no one down here to handle Florida's crisis. Do you see how the son of a b**** is spin s***.

Many, many people may not be "choosing" to stay, but feel they have no choice BUT to stay. They may not have vehicles, can't afford transit out of the area, know no one outside the area to stay with, have no money for motels, can't get into overcrowded shelters, can't bring their pets, etc, etc. After the storm, i hope there is an in-depth report on the infrastructure used to help the millions of low income persons living in the impact area who needed to relocate for the duration of the storm. The stats that DeSantis states are certainly impressive, but was it enough to move EVERYONE? I surely hope all of the low income, elderly, and disabled citizens of Florida reach safety.

Here is a few things. With the path it has now, it will not subside in the same way as it originally would. It passes over warmer water now. And even if it becomes Cat 3, that in itself presents other issues. The surge will be the same more or less, but what is the problem with the Cat 3, is that it will probably be wider than a Cat 4, and thus create a greater area with surge. It will be bad, no matter what. But there's a real chance that it will be Cat 4 on impact.

because nobody even understands the climate crisis, even the supporters of it. The layman's reason for believing it is simply "the last couple years have had some kinda extreme weather". That's not even climate-relevant. I trust in the science, but I've not really looked into it myself, and I'm not quite confident enough to see a few events and pull a Willem Dafoe: "You know, I'm something of a scientist myself"

@@MG-fr3tn Why? This question is the subject of this film. One factor is the sluggish political action of governments in almost every country in the world -- despite numerous climate protection conferences. The lack of political action can often be traced to large fossil fuel companies, which have prevented the implementation of effective environmental and climate protection measures, fearing for their profit margins. For some time now, young people have also been fighting for radical change. Against ruthless companies and politicians who are incapable of acting, in their view. "Fridays for Future" and "The Last Generation" want to see an immediate change of course. Mojib Latif sympathizes with their concerns. But he wonders what their forms of protest, which he finds too radical, really achieve. In large parts of society, they tend to provoke anger, which can serve to increase society's lack of understanding. Have there ever been successful forms of protest? Perhaps other approaches are needed to convince people. Ultimately, however, each individual person -- and their human brain -- may be at the root of the problem. Why? Solving complex problems in the long term is not the human brain's strong point, says neuroscientist Henning Beck. "The structure of our brain negatively influences our behavior when tackling big problems." In this documentary, numerous voices from the world of science weigh in, analyzing the 'climate protection problem' from different perspectives. During the documentary, it becomes clear why scientific educational work has not led to sufficient climate protection despite the clarity of the situation. The film shows which hurdles still need to be overcome -- economic and political, as well as very human ones -- and how science can help. #documentary #dwdocumentary

Kudos to the local government - they really do whatever they can to save as many people as possible. It's not like sitting, doing nothing and praying that everything will be fine. On the other hand, if such hurricanes will be one after another for a prolonged period of time, that Florida will become a ghost state in a near future.
