Rachel.. I was 5 years old when I learned to make masa. By the end of the year, my chore after school was to make 1 dozen tortillas for supper, every day! By age 6 I could spin out tortillas like you do now, and they no longer looked like Texas or Florida! Then I'd go to my grandma's and make two dozen for her about 3x a week I loved it, I learned Mexican cooking very early in life, and it served my own family well when I married and had my own children. I'm 73 now, widowed, but occasionally cook for my precious son in law, that loves Mexican food, especially tortillas, beans , rice, carnes con chili. God is good! Once more a great show! Thank you!.

Margarete, yes Rachel is a doll, I love calm people that teach step by step. I watch all her videos and although I'm 74 now I'm ready to keep learning, it's so hard to cook for one person, because it's just me and my little dog. When married I had a husband and children so I cooked in large amounts. Now it's just me unless I can share with someone.

Hi Rachel, My name is Patricia, and I live up in Waco. I wanted to send you a little note to tell you how much your lessons have meant to me. Just about a year ago, I became seriously ill, to the point that I had to be hospitalized (twice!!) and then enter rehab to re-learn how to walk properly, among other things. I had discovered your lessons just a short time before all this happened, so I hadn't been able to make more than a few of your recipes, but I had enjoyed the results of those very much. Since entering rehab, as you might imagine, I haven't been able to cook at all. But I have continued watching and learning, and I want to tell you how grateful I am. Your demonstrations and lessons have been one of the things that have helped me stay sane and look forward to the time I can be on my own again (with a little help) and be able to continue to learning more actively. Your upbeat demeanor and obvious love of cooking and sharing what you know have pulled me up out of some very bleak moments when I felt like giving up. So I just want to say thank you and let you know owvhow much you and your gift of TEACHING has mea t to me. Take care and be well, and keep spreading the love ❤️ -- Patricia Bowers, Waco, Texas

I’m so glad you’re doing better and i hope you will be able to walk and cook again my friend, every day is a new day. Take your time and practice your tortilla making when you can, and you will see that it’s pretty easy with practice, don’t worry so much about the shape as long as they taste good. You can also add vegetable oil instead of shortening if you want, they will also be soft and delicious. I’m sending you love and hugs my friend, thank you so much for youe sweet comment…one day at a time. ❤️

I'm a 60yo Hispanic male. I once told my mother that I wouldn't het married until I found someone that could make tortillas like her. She laughed and took my hand and led me to the kitchen. She told me that she was going to show me how to make tortillas because I wouldn't find anyone that could make them like her. I never married but you make tortillas like my mother taught me. I may use 2 tsp of baking powder because I like a little more rise in my dough. Great video.

Being raised with the best home made tortillas anywhere I enjoyed this video also. Most Mexicans I know here in Florida use store bought Masa. After MUCH thought about what went wrong, I realized they needed to rest again after I made the balls. I don't know if it's because I'm in Northern Utah and it is DRY and high altitude. But today, after letting them rest for an hour between steps... I DID IT!!!! Thank you so much Rachel! This has been a goal of mine for years. Rachel, I enjoyed this recipe with you because I have been making tortillas since before I was ten years old and my elbows went down into a deep bowl. I made them daily for ten people so they stacked high on the table. We were poor so we ate refried beans and tortillas often and never got tired of them even today and I am 78 years old. Your recipe is the closest that I have ever seen to the one that I was given. I freeze mine all the time and they never stick and are always flexible. Nothing cooks tortillas like an iron grill or frying pan. If you use non stick they seem to shrink back to a smaller size whereas the iron pan causes them to stick a little enough to keep them stretched to the right size. I do not like store bought tortillas. And taco stands never have fresh home made tortillas. If you go to Arizona into Walmart they sell tortillas that probably taste just like yours. But here in Florida the tortillarias (places where they cook nothing but tortillas.)cannot compare to one home made tortilla like you make. I love home made tortillas and home made refried beans not canned. We use a sauce with chunks of pork that would melt in your mouth. And we pour it on our beans. My mother was Polish and her recipe for enchiladas was the best. My dad could cook beans and tortillas he was Mexican born in Texas and went about it the right way and loved this country. Enjoyed watching this.

My grandma passed away when I was young after being sick for many years and I was not raised with my mother for many years. I never learned to cook Mexican food till late in life. Coming from a family of terrible Mexican cooks I never learned to cook the food of my culture. I had to learn on my own mostly from fine chefs on You Tube like you who generously share family recipes tips and tricks on how to prepare traditionally and properly real Mexican food. You are doing a service to us all we must not let our culture die and there recipes disappear. Thank you.

I find it interesting how so many cultures have created family traditions around bread items. My Granny used to fix biscuits from scratch and when they were fresh out of the oven, she would hand me one filled with a dollop of butter & send me out to play. Fond memories. Thank you for bringing that memory to mind after so many years have passed. Also the little bit if dough you had left that you set aside reminded me of my Granny as well. When she made biscuits, she would have a tiny amount of dough left. She would make a tiny biscuit that she said was just the perfect size for 5yr old me. Gosh, I'm tearing up. Good memories, thank you again. I'm in my 50's & my Granny has long passed, so it's nice to remember those little things that she & I shared. She helped raise me, so we were very close. I was really I was too young I think at the time to pay close attention to the details. So thank you because she’s gone now and I miss those wonderful tortillas. Hers were thin and fully cooked, soft, warm and always delicious! I’ve never had anything come close to how good hers tasted. This looks like a great method and I’ll give it a try. She too would treat us to a sample at the end -sharing the way you demonstrated or making what she called “hard tortillas” for us when she was all done. Those tortillas were cooked a bit longer and cracker like and she served them with warm butter or occasionally with peanut butter and jelly then sent us out to play too. It was just something to make us feel extra special--something we’d always wait for… Thanks for sharing I’ve enjoyed your videos! I will definitely look for more!

Yayyy!! I love success stories like this, I know tortillas can be tricky, but you have now mastered it, it's ok to use a little less on the baking powder, but not ok to use more than directed and always knead very very well and let it sit covered for awhile and you'll always be happy. Thank you so much for your comment and support of my channel. ❤👍⚘

First, I want to say "thank you" Rachel for your cooking video's, you remind me of one of my tia's who does all the special cooking. Now, my mom just passed a couple of weeks ago, my family can tell you she made the best tortillas in the family, she would have to make at least an extra two dozen if not more for outside family members who would come by to get their share when they heard she was making her tortillas lol. With bean and cheese with butter with breakfast or dinner, they were the BEST! It looks like you make them the same way mom made them, it brings a tear to my eyes. Thank you so much for posting this video, if you ever are in southern California, please bring me a dozen 😊😁😋

Watching you make them showed me what I was doing wrong. I wasn't kneading long enough and letting it rest. My tortillas were coming out looking like all the states. You have saved me because my husband wants breakfast burritos and I don't feel like going to the store to get tortillas. You are an awesome cook and I am going to try your other recipes.

When I was a little boy in California, a wonderful lady from ensenada Mexico lived with my family. Her name was Rosie. She took care of my brother and I while my parents worked. Nearly every day that we'd come home from school; she'd have homemade tortillas waiting on us for snack. Like your mom, she'd brush them with butter and give them to us and sent us out to play. They were so good. I miss her so. This video reminded me of her. I've been wanting to recreate those tortillas since. Looking forward to trying your recipe.

I grew up with my grandmother making tortillas and they were the best. I learned recently from my aunt who lived with my grandmother that YOU CAN SAVE PART OF THE DOUGH in cling wrap and then put in a zip lock bag and take out the next day and let get to room temp and make the remainder of the tortillas if you don’t want them all the same day because they are so much better fresh. SHE ALSO SAID YOU CAN FREEZE THE DOUGH AND LET IT DEFROST AND COME TO ROOM TEMP AND MAKE TORTILLAS… I tried the freeze method and it today and it worked great!!!! She said don’t leave the dough too long in the fridge but I think it is great you can do that.

Rachel, you are thoroughly detailed when you explain the your techniques in cooking, baking. The fact that your tortillas are still soft. After storing them in the fridge is what I have been searching for. I will be making these. How you spread the butter on the tortilla brings memories of when my mother used to make them early morning, and I would run and grab a warm tortilla and spread the butter and enjoy! Sometimes I would spread homemade Chile my mother would make also. Thank you for the memories! GOD Bless! ❤
I got to watch my grandma then my dad make tortillas, but I never knew the correct ratio of ingredients so each time I've made them, it's been an experiment! Thank you!

I grew up in New England and was welcomed into so many friends homes where mom’s and grandmas were just like you. But we’re Irish, polish, Italian cooks who loved sharing meals. I went to college in AZ and worked with a carpenter 20 years my senior. He was a wonderful man and invited me to his home and I felt I was part of his family. Mexican American and he used to make breakfast, always from scratch, and his tortillas, pancakes, sauces were incredible. I tried a few times to make them after writing the ingredients down as he prepared a meal. My turned out ok, but we’re hard as frisbees after ten minutes. Will try yours as the memories are as wonderful as the food. I truly believe if more people ate meals with others it wouldn’t be so dysfunctional. Great memories of a happy life.

Hi Rachel - I retired in March and my husband and I moved from Colorado to New Mexico. Transitioning from a busy job to retirement was more difficult than I thought it would be and I was struggling to figure out what to do with myself. We found your videos and they have been a Godsend. I've made flour tortillas (still not completely round), charro beans and other things. Today I'm going to try making corn tortillas and (hopefully) delicious enchiladas for dinner. I'm so thankful for you and for sharing your recipes. Your approach to cooking and kind demeanor take the stress out of trying something new. I taught my son how to make tortillas when he recently came to visit. I told him that my friend, Rachel, taught me. I feel like you're part of our family!

Rachel I got up early this morning to make these for my husbands breakfast burrito and they came out so nice… these are the best tortillas I have made to date! I credit it to all the extra “tips & tricks” you share with us from your experience. I’m in Texas and I feel that little tweak of adding less of 2 ingredients did it. Now if I can only perfect the shape🤦🏻♀️😂 I’ll be a happy camper. Thank you so much. God bless you and your Ron.

When I was in college, my boyfriend invited me to visit him and his family over spring break. He lived in a town north of Chicago, and his last name was an ordinary American name. So I was surprised when I went into the kitchen and his mother was making tortillas from scratch. I was fascinated since I had never even eaten a tortilla, much less seen how they were made. She told me that she was born in El Paso, Texas, she was bilingual (Spanish and English) and had been making tortillas since she was a child. I wish that I had paid more attention at that time and asked her to teach me more about Mexican cooking. I married her son, but we lived in Georgia and they moved to L.A. so we didn't get to visit again. Thank you for teaching me to make tortillas as authentic as my late mother-in-law would have done.
