This episode is so nostalgic to me. I used to sell Pan de Sal when I was 8 years old. Waking up 4:00 am every day, a quick bath and a fast paddling to the bakeshop with my bicycle. We stack the breads in a makeshift backpack made out of cartoon box as the body and a strap made of a good old shirt. A good shout of "PAAAAN DE SAAAAAL!" is a wake up call for everyone that it is already breakfast while riding my bike. A piece of pan de sal costs 2 Pesos (merely $.02) and sometimes I can sell 50 to 100 pieces every morning (just do the math here 🤣). I got a share of 40 Pesos or $1 after a 3 hours of work before heading to school. That was my life for 4 years before I entered highschool. I am now graduating with Bachelor of Science in Accountancy degree. Thank you for doing this episode! Subscribing to your channel is never a bad idea!

That is an Instagram Food and only Vloggers who want to get more Filipino subscribers glorify this bread as Cultural item. This should also teach you that so much of Filipino food presented online is a MYTH and the Filipinos in the comment section who are so proud, they never ate bacon or know what is a bagel or croissant.

@@eduardochavacano Culture evolves over time so just because it started being popular in 2019 in the Philippines does not make it any less part of their culture. I just made this recipe last night and my entire family thoroughly enjoyed it! It was gone by morning! We didn't have instant yeast, so I substituted it for equal parts active dry yeast (I dissolved it in warm water first according to package instructions before adding it to my wet ingredients) The dough came out more wet than what you showed in the video, so I ended up adding 1-2 tablespoons of AP flour, and kneading it much longer (I ended up kneading 30-40 minutes before it became not sticky). But overall an extremely pleasant experience! I have tried to make a brioche loaf, and japanese milk bread before but something was always missing and they didn't turn out quite right. This was my first fully successful bread-making experience and I'm excited to make pandesal again :))

My mom, who is filipino, would actually make bread for christmas dinner, although I'm not sure it was a traditional filipino bread, it was still a hit. I was a yeast bread that she would bake into little round loaves and she topped them with cinnamon and sugar so it was basically a dessert for after dinner rather than to be eaten with dinner.

The original pandesal is best eaten when hot. I still go to the same bakeshop where we used to buy them while hot in a paper bag with the aroma that your will love and never forget. Either dip it in your coffee to eat or put cheddar cheese. In the Philippines, my earliest childhood memory was to put Reno Liverspread or coconut jam. Such an unforgetable classic taste when we were young. Until now, we still crave for it.

Thankful I found this video. I have been wanting to make ube pandesal for the past months and had no luck finding the easiest way to make it. Almost everyone made it so complicated with the preparation, kneading and stuff. I was always scared to try it out and mess up, but this video gave confidence that I can finally do it.

Hi Emmy. At 10:21 you mentioned allowing the bread to rest/cool when fresh from the oven, but you actually did the right thing by eating it fresh as that is how we usually eat it. Fresh from the bakery oven and right into our tummies.

For 2 years I went to a school an hour away and while I'd wait for the schoolbus, sometimes my mom would get these tiny malunggay pan de sal, super hot out of the oven for only 1 peso each. They were so delightful to eat as I sleepily sat by the road waiting for my ride.

Ahhh, pandesal. I'd be woken up by my mom at 5am to walk to the pandesal bakery to buy a bag worth ₱50 (≈$1) which has about 25 pieces of pandesal. Obviously, we eat it with butter, cheese, or by itself while drinking coffee or hot chocolate like every other Filipino households would.

That is actually a _perfect_ pandesal. The crunchy crust and the softness of the interior matches exactly how pandesal is supposed to be.

Pandesals are so nostalgic and tear jearking for me. I remember eating it with my late lola and lolo (grandma and grandpa in Filipino) during rainy mornings for breakfast with kape barako (strong black coffee) during my childhood days. It even served as an energy bread for me whenever I eat it with milo with a rainy weather and I often hear the vendor with a fresh shout of "PANDE--SAALLLLL" throughout our neighborhood at 6 AM. I just miss those times and I wanna return back to my childhood days.

It's nostalgic! I remember when I was four years old I would wake up early because my dad wasn't beside me (Yes, I slept with my dad since I always cry in the middle of the night if I wasn't beside him 😂) and from the moment I opened the door I would smell the pandesal from our dining room and I knew it was because of my grandpa. He would wake up early and buy the pandesal in the bakery and slice it in half put margarine and sugar on top and put it in the oven long enough to make it a bit more toasted. My dad and grandparents would partner it with coffee while as for me I partnered it with a chocolate drink.

I live in Goa which is a small state in India. We have Portuguese inspired bread here as well and it's a staple in most Goan homes. From what I've read, when the Portuguese first came here, they didn't get yeast along with them and needed their bread. So they used the next best thing which was palm wine or as we call it, TODDY. However in recent times toddy tappers and toddy is a bit expensive and not so easy to come by and the demand for pão is high so they've switched over completely to bakers yeast.

Wow I remember having to go to the town bakery to buy the first batch of Pandesal for our family. My parents say it's best when it's warm and freshly baked. Especially during chilly Christmas mornings. I'm so happy to see this on here. Makes me want to bake it myself.
