I’ve never used thread locker or tape on my plugs. That’s what the o ring is for. Never had a single issue with oil leaks or lose plugs.

I had a BigDog chopper that always dripped which is where I started with it. I guess I should try without!

You are correct in your calling of weights of oil heavier. There are 2 measurements, ISO and SAE. That gear oil you called out is in SAE. And it is heavier, its resistance to flow, as the number moves up from 0W all the way to the one you mentioned 140w. Most gear oils now are measured in ISO. And there is a conversion chart that you can look up that compares it to SAE. But the HD heavy gear is measured in SAE, so again, you are correct. And you are also correct in stating it runs quieter, it does. Good job on your videos, you use the manuals, refer to them and your troubleshooting methodology is outstanding.

Love your videos, very informative!! I always come to you, as your videos are the most informative!! I have been trying to get some answers about the normal operating temperature for the 2023 RG CVO, but different answers from different folks. I live in CA and this summer was especially hot in July this year. I road a few times when it was over a 100 F and I noticed that my infotainment screen indicated that my temperature reached as high as 242, so I did some research and asked a few folks and an HD tech on youtube said 266 F was the temp that the infotainment system would give you a warning. I few others also indicated that on really hot days above 100 degrees the 2023 CVOs also reached in the 240 range. So, my big question is, is there a temperature that the bike may reach that I should begin to worry some, as I know oil can breakdown when it reaches a critical temperature? Additionally, I am not really sure what the infotainment temperature represents, is it cooling fluid temp, oil temperature, etc.? Love to see a video on 2023 CVO normal operating temps and warnings

Hello! From what I have seen the 240 mark seems to be about the max the bike will run on a hot day. I had thought the max was 275 but the warning could be 266 not really sure. As long as you don't have a warning light I wouldn't worry about it and check your fluid level a couple of times a season. Now the oil debate I think will go on forever. In theory oil is always breaking down and the advice is to change more often in "extreme" conditions of which a CA or CO summer would not be extreme. But doing burnouts from light to light even at 70 degrees could be extreme. It would be great to see oil temp on these new screens! Stick to good maintenance and know that It is easy to over think it, which can really take away from the ride. Sometimes I remind myself to just ride it until it blows up! At least for the last year of my warranty! ;)

There is 5 categories of oil created by SAE. 1 and 2 are old and not important anymore or available. So we are left with 3,4,5. To meet category 3 the oil must have at a minimum 20% lubricating molecules “good lubricant for sliding parts like rings and cylinder wall”, have zink and phosphates “good for impact protection like chain or gears”, detergents “basically molecules that surround carbon this is why you warm engine up to dump all of the carbon in the oil and why you should change your oil in the fall and oil sits all winter” carbon particles are good for screwdrivers but bad for engines. Also category 3 oils have Polyalphaolefin (PAO or moly’s or STP oil treatment.. :) that’s why treatments are ok but not needed anymore in oils, PAO are the most common major synthetic additive used in industrial and automotive lubricants. Category 4 is the same as category 3 with all the same base stock and additives and considered a Synthetic in the USA, the main difference is that it is hydro cracked. This is a method of making an oil have more lubricating molecules. So category 4 has 40% lubricating molecules instead of 20%. They are exactly the same so 3 and 4 can be mixed all day long, but if you think about it let’s say you have a category 3 base stock, by the hydro cracking process you need 2 quarts of oil to make 1 quart of category 4. That’s why it’s double the price. Category 5 is a whole different ball game, I call it a European synthetic oil. Category 5 oils are basically a vegetable oil. It’s still a liquid at -50f and still lubricates at temperature’s over 300f degrees. Petroleum oils do not cling to metal so if you do not run your engine for several years you risk starting engine with no lube on engine parts, category 5 vegetable oils cling to metal so you can park your vehicle for several years and still have oil on parts. Now here is the old wives tales of mixing oils. The first category 5’s where called a castor synthetic, it was great but the molecules are all difference sizes, because of this it did not mix well with anything especially petroleum oils , if you had a wet clutch the big particles would sluge the friction plates and render it useless. If you needed to add oil you could only add the same brand you purchased, the manufacturing was not always exactly the same so if you added a other brand castor oil you had big problems, in the 70’s a new process was invented and called a Ester synthetic vegetable oil, the molecules where the same size so you could mix any Ester synthetic brands and it will mix with petroleum oil category 3 and 4. Your oil change intervals do not change because the carbon build up will harm your engine, I have heard that using a propane engine you could go to 30,000 miles and it still lubricates, unfortunately not with gasoline engines and after 12,000 miles you are starting to destroy your engine because the carbon deposits are too high and are scratching the engine. I tell people you can put in the thickest oil ever made to help dull engine oil, but your engine does not have ears, running thick oils just to make it quiet makes no sense at all, Ester synthetics are not thick but the lubricant lubes 10 times more, I tell people do you want great lubrication or less noise, wear ear plugs….:)

I gave up at one minute. He states that the gear oil 80w140 "is much heavier". Obviously uninformed, and parroting misinformation. Gear oils are defined differently than SAE crankcase or engine oils. An 80w140 gear oil is equivalent to a 20w40 engine oil, (currently not widely available or common, unless you know tribology.) The Syn3 in all three holes would be fine for the majority of riders, but there may be better choices once you study and research a bit, (or a lot, but if you are drilling for that info, why aren't you riding?)
@ITFZone Жыл бұрын
For sure I try to be accurate but a professional I am not. Without a doubt the gear oil runs quieter over the Syn3 in the primary and tranny.
