Fish, Fish, Fish! Exactly. Definitely agree on the fly line thing. First money well spent should be on upgrading the fly line. Even a junk 9ft 5wt combo rod and reel with a mid tier fly line will get ya moving and improving. You'll learn what you need the more you fish.

Excellent advice all around! Always pick a tool that matches the task at hand. Learning about that pairing in the world of fly fishing takes time on water with the best line available. I couldn't agree with you more!

Firstly, Alex explained it well and logically. I own a large number of rods-mostly Winstons. Some are great, some are so-so. Each gives me joy when it’s well matched to the water. I own a few 5 weight 10 foot rods. One big name rod is just too heavy for a full day of fishing. This year I bought a 10 foot 5 weight Scott Centric rod. It performs similary to another 10 footer I own, but is much lighter. This makes a difference when you fish 8 plus hours. A good rod makes playing a fish a thrill.

Hey great advice bro! In my first 2 years of fly fishing I broke two Rod tips (no warranty) and ran over 1 rod with my Jeep! Woulda sucked If they had cost $900 each!! Start out cheap, get good, then splurge! As always good stuff man thanks for what you do!👍

I watched your video on the Orvis Blackout in 2018 - interesting to see it's now called the Helios# Blackout! You picked it right. I was also interested in your comment that you weren't sure about the extra 5 inches of length because my main go to rod is a Daiwa Whisper 10' 3" size 8 rod which is now I estimate 36 years old. If I bump into you on the Tongariro you can try it out! It has caught salmon, sea trout, browns, rainbows and brook trout and still going strong. Keep up the good work!

That extra length has its uses but only In certain situations. I think I still prefer the H3 for the bulk of my fishing here🤙

If your serious about giving fly fishing a go, get some tuition/casting lesson, it's amust. Also most instructors/guides have an array of rods and lines pne can try. Plus it's good to start on good grounding in learning the basics, from personal experience it's hard to get rid of early 'bad habits'!

Awesome arsenal. For my waters, I use Sage X 4wt 9’ for dry dropper. I have 10’6” Helios3 3wt for tight line Nymphing. I have way to many rods, 0wt-9wt. I’ll be thinning herd soon as I really don’t need 30 rods, most of which are Orvis and Sage but I keep eyeing another 2&3 wt for pan fish. Wished I could fish waters in NZ on a daily basis. Hell, I wish I could fish them once.
