I was asked a while back about how I store all the flies I tie. This video shows how I store and organize my flies as well as my fly tying materials. Hopefully this will give you some ideas to help you stay organized and enjoy your time on the water and at the vise a little more. - Enjoy

Amazng! Makes my little pile look inadequate. We should ensure our treasured collections of gear, materials and books are left to those who will use them so much gets trashed when we go to the great river in the sky.

😁😉 yes, decades of fly tying means you will have a LOT of materials in the end. Especially if you spend many of those years working in a fly show and teaching fly tying. - Ian Anderson

I did this same exact thing a couple years ago. Michael’s had those containers on sale for $5 and I happened to find a bookcase at a furniture store that those containers fit perfectly in the dividers ! Still use large flat rubber made containers for my bucktails, necks , hides, other large materials. Really helps for finding materials quickly. Great video !

Glad you like the video. It is an unintended consequence that when you fall into the fly tying rabbit hole you are forced to become more organized! 😃👍 - Ian Anderson

My wife found me these containers for storing beads. Individual containers that come with a storage tray, works great for my tied flies. Each pattern gets its own home. I’m currently finishing the basement so I will have a dedicated room for my fly tying. Then I can organize the rest more efficiently. Great video. Thank you and have a great day!

Love this, I now know I’m not the only one that is OCD about my equipment, gear, and materials. I have almost an identical set up in my garage for wet gear storage (waders,boots, ect), a separate storage locker for rods and rod tubes with organized reel storage and line storage, and a tippet and leader station for building out leaders before trips. My fly tying room itself is wall to wall custom cabinets, shelves, and drawers that have materials organized by type, color, etc. what I am most proud of is my hook and bead storage system and dry fly hackle organization. I wish I were able to show or share a more in depth idea or description of what I have done with the help of my wife to make it easier to find my needed materials and gear. I found this to be the one area that many fly tiers, both old veterans and fresh beginners, struggle with finding a good system and I would love to help anyone sort through this dilemma. As for fly boxes, I have come up with a system that works for me, and what I do is before buying a new box I establish a theme, is it a dry fly box, a classic nymphing box, a euro box, bass streamers etc. I then create a pattern list based on the set up of the box itself and actually take the time to write it down so that I don’t lose sight of my goal or forget my desired patterns. As I work my way through my flies and complete them, I simply cross them off of the list. At the end of every season I open the boxes and then write down any flies that need to be refilled or refreshed and then those will be my prioritized patterns with some room and time for those wild unexpected ideas and patterns. As for you mentioning labeling items, I couldn’t agree more, and getting things up on walls makes a tremendous difference and allows one to make or create more space. Would love to send some photos to you via email which may provide some ideas you could use or share if you are interested. Sorry for the long winded response, but I’m just passionate about our obsession. Take care, and great video!

Mike, This is definitely one of the longest comments I have received.😃 Feel free to send me any photos and keep the conversation going at ian[at]dressedirons[dot]com. I agree with you, the highest hurdle is getting organized and then keeping it organized. I am guilty of getting things organized and then not working the "system" and then things get to be a mess again. I like your suggestion(s) on organizing fly boxes. That is the next thing I need to do. I put all my extra flies in tubs so that when I need to build a fly box I can easily get to the flies I need for said box. However, I need to sort through and organize my existing fly boxes. Something for this winter. Taking the time to organize my tying room has been a big help in getting things done more efficiently and enjoying my time tying more. - Ian Anderson

Re: hook storage box: it needs 2 hands to unlock some versions. I ended up taking the purple locking strip out.😊
@DressedIrons
@DressedIrons Жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out Ruth. I was going to mention in the video that you can take out the lock strips but it slipped my mind. I do not remove them as that keeps all the compartments open and I am certain the whole thing will fall on the floor and then I have a real mess to clean up. 😥 - Ian Anderson
