Living in Sask the most accessible fly I can target is naturally Pike. While I love trout fishing, I also love going for Pike. While I have some of my own designs that work, this fly you presented in this video along with the techniques definately have me thinking. I will definately tie up a few of these, can’t wait to try them, and hopefully over time improve upon the flies I tie. Great video and can’t wait to watch and try more. Ken

So interesting to hear your explanations and your concept with the hardware and colour combos is such a great idea and so helpful! Can’t wait to receive my first shipping! I really like your new camera/light set up, you are taking it to the next level and beyond.

Absolutely love your tutorials. Materials, techniques, fish physiology and psychology (do they have that?). The important thing is I always learn something that helps me take my approach to tying and fishing to the next level. Thanks for doing what you do.

Thanks for sharing Gunnar, very simple and easy to follow instructions. Way to expand on your Tie Streamers like a Pro series with this The Chosen one series. Really enjoying so far, and I know I will learn even more when the higher level version tutorials come out. Tight lines.

Patience is a virtue, I'll do my best to obey... Thanks for all this Gunnar. The 2 cameras are awesome. That HMH has got to be clamped down for all the pulling you do. Good thing I've a second vice with a clamp. ;o)

Thanks Gunnar! Hear you about the different profiles and keying in on what the fish are currently feeding on and expecting to see. My take on the "right fly in the right place" is that while showing the wrong profile might get a few hits is that the right profile (size, color, action, etc.) will get a conditioned (by current foraging) reactionary response from more fish; the difference between a "nip" and a solid, confident, take from a fish eating the fly. The flip side is that "different" might attract more attention - for a while. Like finding a steak in a burger bun - but if the steak turns out to be a rubber fake, "different" will quickly become a red-flag of danger. Don't think the fish are "smart" as much as they are survivors that learn to avoid something that gives them a bad experience (like being caught LOL!). Seen it in a local stream - the bass are all over a particular pattern and then learn to associate it with a bad experience and avoid it requiring a different pattern/action to start catching them again. After 6 - 8 weeks they seem to forget and will hit the fly again but even then the takes seem more cautious. I did really well with large gold beaded hare's ear nymphs for a while with the shiny beads drawing fish from a distance - now I can't buy a bite on a beaded fly. Seems that the distinctive flash from the bead is very obvious and now warns the fish away. Found that in a long run a good imitation of the profile and size of the local forage gets more hits than something that is too "different". Cheers! Hank

Hank Vana2 I have similar experience on a pond near the house. I used a pheasant tail nymph tied with Lady Amherst. For weeks it was a go to pattern that would get hits. Either bass or panfish. Then zip. The question becomes that of experience vs environment. Is it because the pattern no longer suggests something in their food chain now, or has experience taught them to be leery. Sounds like a good MS or PhD topic for a fish biologist.

I tie a very much smaller version of this fly in a shad pattern. I use it to troll for Trout.

For some reason I can't get the spinning head correct. I just stack the fiber like a wool head sculpin and shape with scissors. Will buy more of your kits.

@@Gunnar_Brammer after watching the vid (over and over) I think I'm making the loop too long. I'll try making the loop shorter and completely fill the entire loop with the materials. Or spin collar and head separately. Thanks Gunnar you have a great channel (website too).

Hi G! Thx again for sharing your skillz 👍. Q: hey,I’ve been viewing your vids randomly last winter and my question has to do with silicone.Are you applying it to replace the Tear Mender or using both for different applications? I understand that tear mender has allot less density,more fluid, is it all a matter of durability or design? I have both and shoe goo and other clear adhesives.

Is it possible to use SF-blend for the same purpose as the strung fuzzy fibers? :)
@Gunnar_Brammer
@Gunnar_Brammer 5 жыл бұрын
Yes and No, If you give it a try, I'd highly recommend checking out the commercially available SF brushes produced by RD Distribution. While the material can be used to the same effect - it is not a friendly material to spin up in a dubbing loop in the same manner as the Strung Fuzzy Fiber. SF is Stiffer and more Slippery by comparison and will make a mess of a dubbing loop real quickly.

Good video Gunnar. You explain the whys and wherefores better than anyone else. The line drawings did their job as far as an explanation tool, but you flies are much, much better. Is it about time for a fall pike fishing video??

Johnny Lightning I have been challenged as well by these heads. Watching the details on the video, several times, and going slow I have been reasonable successful. Not as nice as GB’s, but fish-able. He plucks those fibers out with the bodkin while spinning and then works to pull them back toward the hook-shank. When it spins it lays down nicer for the collar and head. Still needs to be combed. After that it is just a matter of a good trim job. Stay back from the hook eye. I’ve used a packer to push it back on occasion. Gunnar makes this look easy, that is the sign your watching someone that knows their craft.
