Greg Senyo is basically the evil genius when it comes to fly tying product design....and his Laser Dub has been a huge success since it hit the market several years ago. In this video we will go over the ins and outs of how to use Laser Dub, handy tools to use, and even how to tie an entire fly with Laser Dub.

Thank you Brian I really needed help understanding how to use this material. I am a old time flytyer (67years old). I stopped fishing and tying about 30 years ago so i could raise my son and daughter, back then there was about 95% feathers and fur for tying flies. So when I started tying again about a year ago when my daughter said "Hey Daddy why dont you take me fishing" then looked on line for tying material I was like What all this crazy synthetics out there. Lazer dub caught my eye fast for smal minnow flies but didnot know where to start. I was watching your video and Bam you tied up a small bait fish minnow and that was a perfect tie. Thanks again Brian you helped a old tier get back some of the passionfor tying.....and you are a hoot to watch.

Very timely video. Just got some laser dub to try out. Your proportional rule of keeping 2/3 of the material on the top of the hook shank so the fly will swim is a particularly good one. You said it in reference to laser dub but it’s true also for just about any streamer including traditional or more recent materials like hair wings & feather wings or ones made from Puglisi style fibers. It would be interesting for you to contact the manufacturer of laser dub & ask why the difference in lengths & texture for what is supposed to be the same material. I’m sure we would all be interested in the answers. Future video: What steps do you go through when designing a new fly? What prompts the desire - a new fishing issue? - a new material to try? What are first & later stages?
@flyfishingtheozarks

Exactly! Specifically for swim flies.....more materials on top than on bottom instantly helps swim problems.

Great video full of awesome tips. Thank you so much for sharing. I think it would be great to see you make a video showing different ways of blending dubbing. Such as how to blend natural materials versus synthetic. I have so many people I know that blend synthetic fibers in a coffee grinder still and get frustrated when it comes out in tiny little pieces when in reality they hoped it would retain the length they originally cut it to.

Brian, I've tried complex multi-material flies that take 20 minutes to tie and found (over the years) that they don't swim as well or fish as well as the simple 3-minute bucktail or lazer-dub streamers like the one you showed. Two tone (dark back, light belly, colors to suit) , a (small) bit of flash and (maybe) a touch of color (like red gills) has always been effective. I tie streamer patterns in sets of different lengths (1 1/2"; 2 1/2" up to 5 1/2") that imitate specific forage and fish the size that is one size bigger than the forage at that time - because fish (like people) will take the biggest piece of pie first :) Would like to see you tie some Bob Popovics style bucktail streamers. They have become my go-to fly for any species that eats baitfish.

I really hate to be so literal, but more material = thicker body. My first instinct is to use less Dubbing as a whole, and add more if you need it

You've mentioned alcohol-based markers before...is that the same as permanent markers, (i.e. Sharpie) or do you have a brand of markers you prefer? The DOA pattern was stellar!
@flyfishingtheozarks
@flyfishingtheozarks 2 жыл бұрын
There may need to be a marker video for the future. Where I have landed with markers (the short story) is Sharpies for barring (basically, color you don't want to "run") and Copic Markers for throats (or colors you want to blend where "running" doesn't hurt anything. Hope that makes sense..... By the way---I totally agree, the DOA is crazy awesome.

I can't say why the lengths are so different in between different colors. Being a synthetic material it should be fairly easy for Hareline to get that more consistent. I am betting as far as the texture and feel of the material is due to the dye. Different color dyes effect materials completely differently. Just look at how hard it can be to find good black bucktail
