I've always said that Gen 6 Just suffered from not getting the third installment... Thet 3rd installment, Z, could have fixed basically all the issues people have with Gen 6. Make it harder, fix the team flare stuff a bit, Open up the world more (like the powerplant area that went unused) and expand on the lore of the 3 legendary mons. Imo the Kalos region is one of the more flavourful and best designed regions and it's a shame they shelved it so early. SWSH i like for some of the same reasons. The region is well done, the cities look amazing BUT they could have added more reasons to visit them more often. The wild area was a great idea but the execution is a little lacking. they did fix it a bit in the DLC though and it gives me hope for the future installments in the series. and now we're talking about DLC, i think it's a great addition! It extends the longevity and replayability of the games and save you from having to buy the third game

Looking back without nostalgia filters, I agree HG and SS are pretty bottom tier. All the difficulty of the abilities and phys/special split added in, without the level cap changing, and the safari zone didn’t really improve what you could catch for your team in the main game. Only issue with B2 W2 was they made a few gen 5 Pokémon unavailable in the main game for some reason. Fossils, the tympole line, munna, etc
@reaganl.6072 жыл бұрын
I think HG/SS have somewhat comparable faults to diamond/pearl, personally. I've replayed them a lot and had different teams every time, whereas with d/p I struggle to even find encounters that are different, so I think their encounter table is better than d/p and the sheer amount of features in them makes up for the shortcomings of the level curve. B tier seems fair for them, idk.

You know what? My opinion on SwSh has drastically changed recently, about 5 days ago I picked up my Shield version that I beat a few days after launch, and I've been enjoying trying to complete the PokeDex? Then I picked up my Sword version, that I started and never beaten, and I'm having so much fun with it as well, it's honestly kinda baffling to me why I changed my mind so suddenly like this. Funnily enough, I put over 200 hours into Let's Go Eevee before even beating it. I have no idea how I did that, or where that time went. I just remember having way too much fun with that game. I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but I thought the simplicity and PoGo catching mechanic was a bit refreshing. I even got a talking eevee plush as a result, I'm a 26 year old woman who sleeps with an eevee plush shhh lol. This all being said, BW are my favorite games, they came out during my high school years, which were my favorite years, and that coupled with the music, graphics, and a lot of the Pokemon designs, they still remain my favorites. I will say though, I so far can't really bring myself to beat my Shining Pearl, but hey maybe I'll drastically change my enjoyment of the games out of no where like I did with SwSh. I could go on with all my opinions about the games, but I think I rambled enough. I just think it was real refreshing to see someone else enjoy SwSh and my comment just sorta went on from there.

That's really interesting, I think my opinion of Sw/Sh took the opposite turn. i really loved and was in awe of the games when they first came out, and really enjoyed my first playthrough and stuff, but after putting 300+ hours into the games I started to see the cracks in them and now they're probably my least favorite pokemon games in the series. I found the story to be very tedious on a second playthrough, which isn't really important in Pokemon games, but sw/sh sticks out as having the most poorly done story in the franchise. After spending dozens and dozens of hours in the wild area, I started to see how lazy parts of it were and how each area feels pretty much the same. the DLC helps, but I feel like we shouldn't have to pay to what should have been the full game + postgame. Without the DLC, the games feel extremely empty and devoid of anything to do other than catch pokemon and play competitively (they are without a doubt the best games for competitive Pokemon in the series, which does redeem them a little in my eyes), whereas almost every other entry in the series had features and things to explore to keep me coming back without the need to spend $30 to add those features in. That being said, everyone is completely entitled to their own opinions. I'd probably rank sw/sh as bottom C, but I totally agree with you about gen 5. Those games came out when I was in middle school, and they were the first games where I was following the news and got super excited about every new piece of info. I remember being amazed at the moving sprites as a kid, and I think that the graphics have aged a lot better than they had any right to. Probably my most played and most loved generation by a long shot, though gen 4 is pretty close behind.

There *are* mods that make pokemon games harder, mostly hackroms for NDS and GBA but actual mods for 3ds games that you can easily install on your super special nintendo DS, and I really recommend them, they also often re-balance pokemon by changing stats, movesets, giving them a second or different typing, which makes a lot of often kinda trash pokemon pretty viable (thinking about bug types that usually only pull their weight in the early game), and that even is completely optional! I don't know if they're still available for download anymore but if you do ever come across these mods, i cannot recommend them highly enough to you! They are very very fun.

I feel so bad, but I can't resist leaving my personal thoughts. I love this tier list tho and I like and appreciate your explanations. Super fair and good-natured. I feel like XY as a whole was too easy, not just the boss battles. But you're right, they're really nice games -- and super underrated at that. SwSh is probably my favorite set of main series games in recent memory. That said, I need to go back and re-experience some time-honored classics. I played USUM recently and it blew me away. The challenge brought the game to life, including the characters, the Pokemon, and even the places sometimes. The totems did fall flat tho sometimes. I think one final noteworthy observation is where games fall relative to their counterparts. FRLG, BDSP, HGSS, and ORAS are all weaker than their corresponding original games. Platinum, Emerald, B2W2, and USUM are all stronger -- in some cases, substantially so. It's frustrating that Pokemon can disappoint on a years-anticipated remake, but it's refreshing to remember that some of the best Pokemon games of all time are remakes.

I respect and agree with ur list. I honestly think Oras beats Em imo. I dunno, it actually adds things to Hoenn than what Em did. Improved kharacters (the Ks intentional), flying over the entire region, DexNav, PokéNav Plus as a whole, was the 1st game to get a postgame episode, a completely original character in Zinnia (with her great writing and catchy as crap theme), being able to catch a Mythical ingame, made Mauville City a fullon mall instead of a boring town, the evil teams are ACTUALLY memorable, Wally was great in Oras than RSE Wally could ever be, etc.

Honestly, I couldn’t agree more on Sword and Shield. They aren’t flawless but I feel like they really take the brunt of some of the fandom’s growing malcontent with the series. My only real issue with them is that I wish they’d had a little more time to make the towns a bit more elaborate/fleshed out (Pokè!London was kind of a letdown compared to Pokè!Paris or even Pokè!NewYork). And maybe some more time to clean up the story a bit, you can tell it’s super rushed at the end and they probably intended for another area to fight through but ran out of time.

I don't do Nuzlockes so I can't really say anything about Nuzlocke rankings but here's a comment to boost the algorithm. I think Black and White / B2W2 are the pinnacle of Pokemon. Requiring everyone to have to adapt and learn a brand new set of Pokemon, no nostalgia bait, no familiarity, and you can't catch any old Pokemon until after you've proven you can beat the game with all the new ones is actually incredible! If every region did this reset I would be way more hyped to try out newer Pokemon games. This also makes remakes way more valuable because it's reintroducing older Pokemon into the current gen, which drastically changes up the competitive play, as well. The problem with Pokemon is a combination of feature creep and power creep which is due to the fact new Pokemon have to be as good or better than currently existing Pokemon. If they introduce new Pokemon each time then you don't have to worry about the scaling power creep as each new generation would get a reset in power. Finally it would be great for Pokemon to introduce a new set of Pokemon to use each generation because it also means they can't sell their games off of nostalgia, alone, and actually require them to make good games again. Sadly so many people just want to see the same Pokemon over and over that we will NEVER get another game like Black and White / B2W2 which is really sad because it was the first and only generation to really push the idea of changing the formula to let the game grow.

Played through SWSH many times. Every time it was a unique team of pokemon, something that I was actually quite sad to see going to BDSP. I guess I got so used to using anything I wanted once I reached the wild area that playing an old-fashioned pokemon game kinda bored me.

I never played FRLG or HGSS, so when thinking about BDSP, I just assumed that it was the odd one out of the remakes and played it too safe with what it changed and added. Hearing about them in this video, though, I guess ORAS was actually the outlier, but a positive rather than a negative.
@alijohar49372 жыл бұрын
ORAS is an infinitely better game with so many more Pokémon and things to do post game. Also Mega Evolution. BDSP is arguably the worst game I’ve played
@skullerclawerbandicoot79662 жыл бұрын
@@alijohar4937 Its even better than hgss. Dont have to deal with the grind and the characters all feel memorable (Wally being a great example), the new features feel REALLY innovating, we can get a Mythical ingame, got a completely orignal character in Zinnia, etc.

The first two remakes, the point was to release fundamentally the same game without being held back by running on a brick from 1989 (Gold and Silver worked on original gameboys, only Crystal required GBC). Having more than two colors per sprite was enough of a selling point for FRLG, though despite not changing the main game much it did add a fair amount of optional postgame on top. Ruby and Sapphire came out on the same hardware as FRLG, they were the baseline of technical competence previous remakes were meant to bring Gen 1 up to, so they must have thought they couldn't just sell ORAS on being functional and possessing graphics when the originals already functioned and possessed graphics. Then they gave up, and sold BDSP on being functional and possessing graphics, when they're about as buggy as the originals and a side-grade at best in graphics. Sales numbers suggest giving up works.

Very reasonable takes. It's refreshing to see someone take a considered look at the 3DS and later games. I'd personally have put FRLG above RBY, and sandwiched ORAS between Emerald and RS.

As someone who’s been playing since Gen 1 I must say…the Unova games are by far my favorite. The ones that are most disappointing imo are the Alola games. I love the look, feel, aesthetic etc., but man those cut scenes are a killer. I’d really like them if they would’ve cut some of the fat. Especially USUM. Also, I really enjoy X/Y as well. I had the most fun with it when I did a “bad” Pokémon run (mostly just mons with a base stat total well below 500). Still beat it, but it was slightly more challenging and I got the most out of it then
@MrA60602 жыл бұрын
IMO the only reason gen 4 is so well seen is only because we got a trash game and a quite good game in the same gen, so going from trash to good is what people loved in the 4th gen, my very first pokemon was pokemon pearl, and even then i didn't enjoy it, i've replayed it recently and they are still as bad as i remember, but i've also played pokemon platinum recently and again, it's not as good as i remembered. Black and white were fine honestly, completely new pokédex forced you to use new pokémons, black 2 and white 2 were the better version, it was a sequel and they did it in a good way i think, new part of the region, changed things around, added new pokémons to the pokédex so the teams could be even better. Also the seasons were a new thing and i think they were alright, i think that 1 month for a season was too much time, i always finished the main story in a week or so, so waiting an entire month (without changing the console's clock, i hate doing that) is way too much. for the rest i kinda agree, the let's go pokémons are really bad and for children, and i don't think they belong to the main series category, it's more like a spin-off, but i don't think they'll ever do another let's go game, i don't remember 2 jhoto pokémons that would be suited for the cover and starter tbh

that you put D/P on B surprises me. I think those are only barely playable because they are sooo freakin slow pased. Without a emulator to speed up the gameplay it is just brutal. Very entertaining video, thank you.

Loved this tier list! My only major disagreement is Sun and Moon. I loved playing Sun and trying to Nuzlocke it. Platinum, to me, also deserves S tier, just out of nostalgia tho (DPP was my starting generation and Platinum holds a special place in my heart).

Ranking gen 1 types (ranking grass types for example), so its a smaller category, plus you could rank them based on their score. Crown them by type and then do it for gen 2 and see does the gen 1 grass type beat the gen 2 grass type, then it becomes perpetual content
@joeyteter93832 жыл бұрын
Also also, I think Black and White only allowing new Pokémon was great. Maybe that’s just me, but I loved the Unova dex and only being allowed to use it

I’d probably rank all the gen 1 and 2 games at f just because there’s almost no reason to play them over their respective remakes. I can see why people would prefer rse or dpp over their remakes, but not the first two gens. I also have a hard time going back to gen 3 games because not having the physical special split sucks and the earlier games even til gen 4 have a lot more instances of Pokémon being annoyingly hard to find/evolve before the postgame and many Pokémon having absolutely atrocious level up movesets Gliscor is one of my favorite Pokémon and it suffers from both of these problems. The remakes not fixing this really pissed me off
@MG-mq3zf2 жыл бұрын
I used to agree about gen one until I discovered the world of creative world of gen 1 jank and how I could get it to work for me. It was pretty fun going through Kanto in gen one after really knowing how Kanto works "under the hood." The remake fixes the glitches and exploits naturally, but in some cases makes for a more vanilla experience. I'm not saying FRLG aren't better, just that red, blue, and yellow have their charms.
@andrewdavis2002 жыл бұрын
I generally agree with you aside from Gen 2 and Emerald. Emerald is S tier easily in my eyes. The legendaries are iconic and the post-game island has so much replayability. Even Pokémon contests are good fun. As you say, the physical/special split makes gen 3 age badly but its important to judge the game for its time. Gen 2 I similarly rank higher. Gen 2 is still the only one have as expanded of a map as it did. Sure that's partly due to it originally being a sort of DLC for gen 1 but it is so fun exploring Kanto after you beat the E4 for the first time. Sure the levelling could be better but the aesthetic is great and so are the legendaries.

People often talk about the level curve in gen 2 games, completely forgetting that it's a early 2000's game, kids played a single game for a year or longer. Gen 2 was really great at offering end game and johto is only really bad in a nuzlocke sense imo. Having a large overworld and a lot of what Crystal later added was really great editions

Love the video. Not here to get mad at you for YOUR tier list, mine is different so I can make my own. But I want to voice my own opinion on my rant about Gen 4, platinum is an A tier while diamond and pearl are low C tier. Platinum is the best enhanced version by far. DP dex had 2 fire types and ones a starter (terrible dex in general, why add so many new mons only to the post game), kind of lacking gym designs, and an overall worse story. There’s a reason I spent hundreds of hours on platinum as a kid and didn’t finish a diamond run until last year. The battle front was another great addition too. BDSP should have been a platinum remake, even if they still made it two versions

I still love HGSS and I consider them my personal favorite Pokemon games, but I 100% understand the criticisms of it, especially from a Nuzlocker's perspective. And I do realize that they are certainly not the best game in the series. As for the rest of the list, I actually do appreciate a lot of the choices here. Personally, I haven't had the best time playing X and Y, but I think you make a really compelling point about them. And finally, someone else agrees that ORAS and SWSH aren't terrible games- and if anything, are actually very good. I don't really agree with the rationale behind placing FRLG and HGSS below RBY and GSC, but that's really it.
