are there any cons to this kit? im really debating this or the qmax for a 350whp turbo build with an efr6258 and im thinking about which would benefit me in terms of easy cooling for the turbo as well
@baltod4978
@baltod4978 3 жыл бұрын
@@rosaatomica9976 With this kit (the only kind that I believe is routed this way) the turbo get water thats been cooled through the radiator vs water thats already been heated up coming out of the block. Its supposed to help the longevity of the turbo, but thats hard to quantify. People that have it routed the other way have had them last a long time. Maybe the cooler water will help it last longer? Only time will tell I have a temp sensor at the coolant route and one at the front where the hot water comes out- the coolant at the back stays steadily at 195 degrees, while the water coming out of the block will fluctuate wildly between 215-250. If you're wanting to feed the turbo cool water, its obvious where you'd want to grab it from
@rosaatomica9976
@rosaatomica9976 3 жыл бұрын
@@baltod4978 215-250?? damn so basically saving the fourth cylinder at the expense of the first :/ thats somewhat of a bummer, but i imagine even with those temps and a well maintained turbo that the car would last a lot longer without a reroute, im also pretty disappointed about the floppy silicone hose and worm clamps this kit comes with, makes it feel cheap and not formed well
@baltod4978
@baltod4978 3 жыл бұрын
@@rosaatomica9976 Yea. It'd only ever reach that high on the hot days though. Without a reroute water goes into the front and exits the front at a different location. The 4th cylinder coolant can get stagnant. With any coolant reroute however- water passes through completely. So any reroute is better than no reroute supposedly. I got a Blackbird fabworx coolant tube that basically replaces 3/4 of that long silicone hose with mandrel bent tubing. Cleans everything up nicely and doesn't rest against anything like the hose did. The FM reroute has a lot smaller footprint than the other ones tend to have. I had a real difficult time getting the Super Miata one installed. This one slipped in and out perfectly though, with room to spare. That- and bing a single piece makes it worth it to me.

@@baltod4978 i see, if i could get something like that blackbird hose or the one iL motorsports makes id be pretty happy, im still a skeptical about which unit really flows better or is worth it since the fm is 300 and the qmax is 200

Bought the reroute and so far very happy. Half installed but I have a question. The thermostat I got with the kit is fairly loose in its installed position, is this normal and if not should I be concerned? Thanks.
@FlyinMiataVideo
@FlyinMiataVideo 3 жыл бұрын
A little loose is fine. The key is to make sure that the c clip is fully seated so that the thermostat will not fall out. Thermostat rotation is completely normal. Once the thermostat is seated, make sure there is not any large bypass for coolant to pass around the thermostat. If you have any other questions or issues, please give us a call at 970-464-5600 or drop our techs an email at support@flyinmiata.com. Hope that helps!

What coolant type/brands do you recommend for a street driven 1996 Miata? Also is there any specific one you guys use?
@FlyinMiataVideo
@FlyinMiataVideo 4 жыл бұрын
This is the sort of thing that some people get very excited about and there are probably multiple extremely long forum threads out there. More important than the very specific chemistry is probably the change interval. All the different chemistries are mostly there for corrosion protection. One thing we do recommend is to run the minimum antifreeze level required. 50:50 is great if you drive year-round in Canada and your cooling system has to be safe to -40F/-40C, but it's far too much antifreeze for a summer-only or more southern car. Antifreeze has a lower specific heat capacity than pure water, so running too much antifreeze will decrease the ability of your cooling system to store and transfer heat. Running 30% antifreeze will improve your cooling system's efficiency and still give you freeze protection down to 0F/-18C.

My heater core broke! Can I bypass the heater core by clamping down or closing the two lines that led to it? Should I get rid of the thermostat if I did that? Or should I connect the the hardline from under the exhaust manifold to the heater connection in the back of the head? If I did that do I need to restrict the flow similarly to how the heater core did previously? Some tough decisions out here

with that big of a bypass past the thermostat the car wont come up to temp quickly or at all in cold climates. why would you add this to your reroute?
@FlyinMiataVideo
@FlyinMiataVideo Жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but we're not really following your question. With our reroute, there are two potential bypasses around the thermostat, the heater core and the turbo. The heater core is a bypass around the thermostat stock - so the heater works quickly - so we're not changing anything there. The water flow through the turbo (if added) is technically an additional bypass, but there's not much flow through there (which is on purpose since the water cooling is really only needed after you shut the car off). If that's not what you're referring to, can you specify what bypass you're talking about?
@fatalgaming6068
@fatalgaming6068 Жыл бұрын
@@FlyinMiataVideo does that bypass in the housing below the thermostat just go to the heater core then back through the front of the engine or does it go around the thermostat and through the radiator then back into the engine?
@FlyinMiataVideo
@FlyinMiataVideo Жыл бұрын
@@fatalgaming6068 The water pump inlet, on the front lower left (driver's perspective) of the engine? The metal pipe attached to the rear of that housing is the return from the heater core. The coolant coming in there starts at the back of the engine, flows through the heater core, then flows back into the engine at the water pump inlet (this is true with stock and with our reroute). The smallest hose on that piece (attached to the front of it) is a bypass around the stock thermostat (that remains with our kit, typically). Short version, the only additional bypass with our reroute is the turbo, if installed.
@fatalgaming6068
@fatalgaming6068 Жыл бұрын
@@FlyinMiataVideo I understand the heater core part/ bypass. That’s just like factory, but the bypass connects to the hose that feeds to the top of the radiator which is cooling your coolant way before the thermostat opens. This will overcool the engine when warming up and can cause excessive warm up times and cause the engine to not fully reach operating temp in 30-40 degree Fahrenheit days. That bypass should either not connect to the coolant hose post thermostat or be made about 90% smaller.

@FlyinMiataVideo
@FlyinMiataVideo Жыл бұрын
The point of the reroute? To even out the temperature differences across the head, provide additional cooling, and a cooler, more active cooling line directly to the turbo. This video may help: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIfKdKuGhdqJfqs
@just_passing_through
@just_passing_through Жыл бұрын
@@FlyinMiataVideo Thanks for that link. I just watched that video. So basically instead of the cold water entering the front of the block and passing piston one first and then getting a bit warmer as it passes piston two and a bit warmer again as it passes piston three and a bit more warm as it passes piston four, and then returning to the front of the block to exit, it now does exactly the same thing and gets warmer as it passes each piston but then exits out the back of the block. I’m really not sure how that reduces the temperature variance as the coolant still gets warmer as it passes along the chain. Will it not still be the same temperature as it passes piston four? It still took exactly the same path to get there, just exited through a different port on the way out.
