This is a good explanation of what the HORSE does but tells you nothing about what the RIDER needs to do to make the change.

Patq McKeon Thank you for your comment! You make a good point, so we've added some language in the description of this video to briefly explain which aids the rider uses to help facilitate the lead change. Hopefully you can recognize what the rider is doing with her aids. This video could be considered the precursor to how to do execute a flying change from the rider's point of view. Our next video will focus solely on what the rider does with the outside rein and both of his/her legs at the moment of suspension.

I love flying lead changes, did a flying lead change once with the help of my instructor. Now I can do it by myself

...what...? Man I give up. Forget horses, no matter what I lookup, I don't understand it... why can't people explain and do things in a more simple way? Like seriously. I can just imagine myself taking lessons then the trainer is like, "DO A LEAD CHANGE," DOES IT LOOK LIKE I KNOW HOW TO DO THAT... trainers yell at you for not doing something you don't even know and get pissed when you ask them how to do something. Forget it, I will just stick with walking on guided horse trails. :/

Hey Nikki B! Don't give up! Lead changes are not simple otherwise there wouldn't be a kajillion videos about it. Videos are a great way to verbalize and visualize, but that is only one step: the most important way to learn is to feel it. So when you are practicing your lead changes, hopefully you will hear in your head the things we are trying to break down for you and you can begin to understand the horse's movements through the lead change. Again, flying lead changes are not easy, and it takes patience and practice. Hang in there, and thanks for watching.

Kim deNoue I have switched between about 5, but each time it was just either a short free lesson or a trainer that worked a riding camp, overall, they all suck in my mind :/ Glad you found a good one that actually knows how to train people!

Honey, get another trainer! Perhaps get one that specializes with beginners. Horses are in my blood now, but it took a long ways to get here, and there were many instances when I wanted to give it all up due to frustration. Keep going, the end result is so worth it!

Start with the simple change and try to effect a change of lead with as few trot or walk steps through the change. Support the horse with the a firm connection with the outside rein as you change direction. The outside rein is the balancing rein and is key to keeping your horse straight and balanced. Stay still with your upper body. Remember, Perfect Practice Makes Perfect, and be patient with yourself and your horse. Send a video if you can!

I'm confused- like- what is a lead- what changes when changing lead-
@jennyiversonschwartz4 жыл бұрын
Notice that at the canter, a horse leads with one front leg. If a horse is cantering clockwise, then it is on the right lead as the right front leg is the “reaching” leg. Conversely, when the horse is cantering counter clockwise, the horse is on the left lead as the left front leg becomes the leading leg. Think of “lead” as the “leading front leg”. Does that help?

@@jennyiversonschwartz This video speaks of lead changing on the front AND back feet doesnt it? And also only during canter. Is it natural for a horse to do a lead change (generally just the front feet) when in a full-speed gallop?
@jennyiversonschwartz Жыл бұрын
@@ValCronin Thank you Val for your comment. Yes, the lead change refers to both the front and hind legs in a specific foot-fall pattern at the canter only. When a horse canters or gallops at a "cross-canter", which means the front legs are on a different lead or foot-step than the hind legs, it will feel off-balance. What causes horses to "cross-canter"? It could be lameness or simply being off-balance. It is more natural for horses to canter and gallop on a correct lead. I hope this answers your question.
