Jan Eggenfellner of Viking Aircraft Engines visited with Vern Knott's homebuilt Zenith (STOL) CH 750 equipped with the new turbocharged Viking engine, on his way back from the Copperstate Fly In. Here we go flying (in the rain) to try out this new engine. (Sorry for the problems with the audio)
Check out the performance: • Video

This would be a really good engine choice if it were not for the financial risks of dealing with Viking Aircraft Engines. Some of the past financial choices made by Jan, in his sales of engines to the experimental community, can't be ignored. I would be able to support this new venture if Jan was using current profits (some portion of) to repay prior debts to builders from the past. If Jan started to handle prior debts, for those who were financially harmed by his business practices, that would be a very smart move! If builders could see honorable financial activities going forward, through the current profits from Viking, then the sales of this engine would be dynamic. In the mean time, options like UL POWER and the up and coming very simplistic D-MOTOR are by far more logical choices. Buying an engine for your experimental from those with improper financial dealings is just gambling. The past does not equal the future, and the complete power to do that which is right is all in the hands of Jan. Hopefully, Viking Aircraft Engines will make some empowering financial decisions going forward and greatly enhance their potential for the future! Treat your customers like gold and they will bring you more sales then you could ever imagine!

As you said yourself: "The past does not equal the future..." Whatever Jan's sins are or were in the past, his engines are becoming quickly and very widely acceptable and used in many different reputable aircraft brands. As you may know, pilots and aircraft companies are naturally skeptical and still his engines are increasingly being sold and used. That speaks of quality and service. Is Jan a perfect businessman or should he be hanged for past mistakes? What about you?

Nice job on the engine, have you guys tried other propellers to gain more speed? When we switch away from the Warp-Drive propeller, we gain several miles per hour on our airplane. The climb suffered a bit and the vibrations are much more noticeable with a Lycoming but unfortunately the W-D will be staying off the airplane. Best speed improvement was going to a Prince P-Tip prop.

From the buzz in the audio, it sounds like that engine has ignition shielding problems, causing spikes on the DC bus, with the frequency of the buzz varying directly with propeller speed. A defective alternator, with one bad diode, could cause a similar effect.

Milosz Ostrow yep agreed. Simple capacitor between positive and negative would take care of that.
@flexairz

Not always, a capacitor has frequency dependent characteristics. This interference seems indeed from the alternator, but could equally be radiated into un-shielded intercom wiring.

Is this engine an Inline 4cyl laid down side ways? Inline-4 seems like a poor choice, because of the vibration issue, and balancer robs power. I like vibration engines like boxer 4 or 8. Boxer 6 has a some vibration. On the turbo issue; when the engine is off boost, isn't it running very inefficently because of the turbo engines low compression ratio?

What is the red knob for. The pilot said he was turning on the turbo to raise MP? Does this knob control the blow off valve? Is this auto mixture like a Rotax. I didn't clearly understand that section on it.
@peterdactyl8071
@peterdactyl8071 9 жыл бұрын
Travis Olson Maybe controls the wastegate? Good question. Looks like a mixture knob but clearly that's not what it's used for.
@sugershakify
@sugershakify 9 жыл бұрын
Travis Olson Blowoff valve and wastegate are different things The red knob is a wastegate control. Controls how much exhaust is either going through the turbo or bypassing around it. More exhaust through the turbo makes it spin faster raising boost. You can also control it automatically with a "boost controller" that will sense MP and open and close the wastegate as needed. That is what they were talking about on the automatic control at same time. A blow off valve is on the intake side and is used to prevent back pressure from building up when you close the throttle. Turbo is still spinning when you close the throttle, that boosted air has to go somewhere .... a blow off valves - well, blows it off.
@austincampbell7335
@austincampbell7335 8 жыл бұрын
+Travis Olson I thought the red knob was the mixture?
@sugershakify
@sugershakify 8 жыл бұрын
+Austin Campbell It usually is in an airplane. But this is an EFI engine, so mixture is controlled by the computer. It was probably handy for them to use an existing mixture control knob as their boost control knob instead
@bitteroldman3151
@bitteroldman3151 5 жыл бұрын
@@sugershakify to expand on your description of the waste gate function. There are two paths for the exhaust exiting the head, in one path you have the turbine section of the turbo assembly, in the second path you have the waste gate. Both paths eventually exit out the exhaust pipe. If you close the waste gate manually with the red handle (or automatically), it forces all the exhaust through the parallel exhaust path, through the turbine (all exhaust energy spins up the turbine which spins up the compressor in direct proportion) If the waste gate is fully open then the exhaust gases exit the engine taking the path of least resistance, bypassing the turbine section, exiting the exhaust pipe. You can adjust the waste gate position from fully open to fully closed, thereby controlling the manifold pressure. You can see a graphic of this at the Honda website here world.honda.com/automobile-technology/vtec-turbo/page2/ In Honda's graphic, it omits the location of the waste gate completely, but I speculate it is located in the duct bypassing the turbine.

does any kit include the motor?
@philalcoceli6328
@philalcoceli6328 6 жыл бұрын
That depends on the company that produces the aircraft or aircraft kit. Usually, but not always, most of those that do include the engine are the more economical, lighter, smaller ultralight aircraft companies. Most other companies will give you different choices on engines with and added cost on top of the cost of the kit. Factor that in before you buy, as well as paint, etc. in unfinished kits. Read the small print. Still, most modern homebuilt aircraft are a better value than regular manufactured aircraft. Invest highly on the part before the control panel: YOU and your building and flight training. A bad builder or a bad pilot with a bad or careless attitude will bring down the best of the best of aircraft.

@samualwhittemore228
@samualwhittemore228 6 жыл бұрын
shell back Build it - then fly it. the FAA is an UnConstitutional agency. Just follow state regs for locations for STOL. And do not land on a FAA recognized runway. You would be putting them(airport owner) a risk and liability if they allowed you to land. Landing under false pretenses is illegal. SO stay on privately held pastures - otherwise be prepared for a swat raid and asset forfieture. ;))

"EXPERIMENTAL" on the aircraft and/or engine means that you, the builder, are the test pilot, flight test engineer and R&D department. Developing and aircraft engine is a long, very expensive project. Most of the people attempting do not have $M's for long test programs but work on modest budgets. Whatever problems you encounter are yours to solve, for the most part.

"reverse tail"??? ALL airplanes have a reverse tail..it's the point of a stabiliser, remember! To push the tail down! Even delta flying wings have to have negative lift at the tail end, except the latest jet fighters, who need special computers to manage the extreme instability. Stability computer failing mean instant bail out.

yes, but most don't look like an upside down miniature wing like on the STOL CH750. They are usually have a almost symmetrical airfoil and use the angle of attack on the horizontal stabilizer to counter the wing. Its just another design to help with STOL control but slows the plane down a bit with the extra drag. This plane usually flies around 80 - 95 knots.. The Cruzer CH750 has a more traditional horizontal stab for the slightly higher speed, 120-140 knots.
