Whoa, that's beautiful and it has flaps! Excellent camera work too.

Thanks Andrew! I am lucky to have a very understanding wife who enjoys a bit of camera work!

I liked very much all versions of your flying wings and I'm very curious about them. Could you post a video showing how you design and build those magnificent gliders?
@miniphase6 жыл бұрын
Hi Io, good to hear you are enjoying my tailless creations. At the moment my time is as a bit of a premium, so as much as I would love to make a construction video it will not be happening in the near future. If you have a look here- www.rcgroups.com/nurfl-gel-762/ you'll find plenty of build info including a thread on this wing and the 4 metre version. Happy landings!

Looks like a SWIFT (Swept Wings with Inboard Flaps for Trim) ultralight rigid wing hang glider (OK, I used to hang glide). SWIFT was designed here in California, but really seemed to find a home across the pond. Your glider has nice stability and flying qualities! OK, how do I build one?
@miniphase6 жыл бұрын
Yup, the swift has always been a point of inspiration for me. This wing has more sweep, a higher aspect ratio and less washout than the swift, construction is simple.... foam core wings cut with the twist built in. This model was glassed but you could veneer it too. Ply spar for stiffness.... there's build thread over in the Nurflugel section of RC Groups.

That's one way to take ones head off!! Have you thermalled this one or the 4M version? Is there a reason for using the Eppler airfoil instead of one of the more modern ones? Notwithstanding, it does fly very well, doesn't it? EP later? Another nice ne from Minphase.
@miniphase7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mike! Yes I have thermalled both, the 4 metre one thermals a lot better by virtue of its size. It easier to work small thermals and tighter sites with the smaller one. I almost lost the bigger one in a boomer on it's second flying session. I've used the modern sections on other wings. I don't rate the MH45 much....jack of all trades and master of none. The HS522 seems good, but the EH2/12 seems a more versatile and benign section....also that extra few % thickness helps add a lot of stiffness to the wing- a very important quality!

GREAT video. Was that a Crow breaking set up used to slow the wing down for landing.
@miniphase Жыл бұрын
Thanks! The flaps are just about pitch neutral, IIRC they needed a touch of up elevon trim.... it's all in the correct sizing of the control surfaces..

Awesome! Awesome plane! Awesome flying! Awesome videography! Some screen shots would be most suitable for framing... i.e. 2:13/3:53 Thanks for sharing!!!

Many thanks for the compliments! I am currently building a 4 metre, built up version of this wing for flat field work. I'll also be building a cleaner version of this 2 metre version as the one in the video is embarrassingly tatty!!

I love this simple design. Sometimes I dream to build a big one, put it upon my shoulders and run down a hill, just to see what will happen. Amazing piloting as well. Where do you place the CG in such a design ?
@miniphase5 жыл бұрын
Hi Dimitris... we have the same dream! GC is at about 18% MAC. Several online calculators out there to help you.
@NeoFrontierTechnologies4 жыл бұрын
Nice. What size engine and battery - weight wise - would one be able to add to that system and still be able to do a LOT of gliding with the engine off ?
@miniphase4 жыл бұрын
The model was carrying about 300g of ballast built into the wings and it probably won't even notice another 300g being added. That would give you plenty of scope for an electric setup whilst still keeping the wing loading at a reasonable level. Cheers!

I see flaps now. How effective are they in lift or land mode?

perfect. Where is center of gravity ?
@miniphase7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! CG is about 18% MAC....this puts it at roughly 50mm behind the root trailing edge if memory serves me correctly. The 4 metre version in my videos is a lot smoother and thermals really well, but this smaller version is faster and more aerobatic.

How dare you build the exact glider I want to build ! :-) Yes, I finally want to try "your" EH2/12. Mine will be a lower aspect ratio. Do you have a final recommendation, based on your many hours of airtime, for wing twist in this configuration?
@miniphase6 жыл бұрын
The lower aspect ratio will certainly give you a better roll rate Kent, I used 3.5 deg on this wing so maybe go for 4 deg if yours is going to be a little stubbier. I'm planning to get back on with my dormant projects (and start some new ones) before too long......
@highster6 жыл бұрын
Good. Thanks. 4 deg should be safe. Shooting for a no tip stall flying wing. And yes, having a good roll rate will come in handy.

Really like that one! The first RC nurflugel video I watched, approx 6 years ago, was similar to this one. Maybe it was one of yours. :¬)

You'd need some kind of fuselage underneath to hold a motor and battery and the autonomous flight gear but I don't see why it couldn't be done.
