Same situation except I was with a group coming back from a boating trip and we were all carrying lifejackets. The desk attendant claimed that they were an extra carry-on, and we had all made an effort to pack light so we would have no checked bags. So we put on the lifejackets, and walked on the plane. Imagine sitting on a plane getting ready to fly over the ocean and seeing 10 people walk on WEARING lifejackets!

I take my helmet with me when I fly. The easiest way to carry it is on my head. There's the usual quip from a flight attendant about hoping it's not a rough flight -- and the occasional quip from one of the pilots when disembarking.

People do the same with heavy jackets all the time, they never ask questions at check-in but when I'm boarding I'll throw it on no matter how hot it is. Others do the same. Then once on the plane we take it off. I just use it as a pillow

I remember a youtuber shared something similar. He worked in fashion line previously. His boss needed to transport some clothing and accessories to another city (for an event) by flight but his company was stingy. Hence, every staff member who needed to be there wore 2 to 3 layers of the clothing + multiple jewellery, sunglasses and hats, and board the plane that way so that they don't have to pay for carry-ons. The people at the check-in counter were shocked, wide-eyed, but they didn't ask much. Lol.

You can see available seats when checking in online. If it shows full or near full they’ll ask for people to volunteer bags for free at the gate and usually give you a better boarding group. Volunteer your extra bag and then you can board earlier and there will still be space for your normal carry on.
