Back to where it all started; flying gliders!
Today I’ll be taking you along on a cross-country flight together with my friend Maurits.
Maurits learnt how to fly gliders at the age of 14 and has accumulated more than 700 hours since.
Join us on a 3 hour cross-country in the beautiful Duo-Discus; an ultimate high-performance glider with a compact “hidden” sustainer engine. Do we make it home without using it?…

Awesome, I learnt to fly a very long time ago when I was 17. I’m still at it professionally some 45 years later but unbelievably I’ve never flown a glider or a turbo prop. I guess there’s more I’m going to have to try and do before it’s to late!

@@LUXAviators I have no license. I had an instructor in glider and motor glider and C 172 and Z 43. So you can fly it but without take off and landing. Hey Bambi, awesome video!!! This glider ride along was really cool. I've always wanted to fly a glider and now you make me want to go get my glider rating!! lol By the looks of you falling asleep in the back says a lot, as to how comfortable the ride must be. Having that engine as a backup gives you such a piece of mind to be able to go even longer distances. I enjoyed every minute!! Thanks

Ah 'real flying' at last :-) - all the really good pilots learn to fly gliders - I know some switched on airlines usually prefer them as they usually have superior handling skills and are more attuned to nature i.e. my friend used to use the wave lift coming of the Alps, flying out of Milan to gain height quicker and save fuel and of course money. I myself for example have used thermal lift in cloud streets in Saskatchewan in a Cessna 182 to increase speed by about 20% and decrease fuel consumption by about 30% at the same time, and using ridge lift to help climb over mountain passes in the Canadian Rockies in an underpowered Luscombe. Most power pilots who haven't flown gliders have little understanding of how to use the atmosphere to aid them or when to be cautious.

@LUXAviators
@LUXAviators 4 жыл бұрын
That seems interesting! I ask myself, yes you can use cloud streets but running the engine on idle only increases drag which is not very efficient? How do you handled that then?:) I fly a Super Dimona where you can just shut off and feather the prop, decreasing drag a lot.

What a nice flight. Thanks for sharing it and including the tips like thermals are better on the sunny side of the cloud, and hopping cloud to cloud. Many non-glider people ask about these things. Also nice to bring the power and non-power parts of the community together as there is such a divide. Paragliding next?
@zendesigner
@zendesigner 4 жыл бұрын
redbikerdude it’s the combination of the sun and wind side. So if the wind is from the opposite side it can be either. The nice thing is that no day is the same. So you always have to figure out the specifics for that day

Infernal machines. There is nothing worse than these sound polluters beeping away all day. You have a variometer gauge to look at. A slightly more pleasing tone would be ok, but not beeping three times a second. Bloody things.

Never flown in a glider before. My understanding is that rudder input is very pronounced and required for good coordinated turns. The string on the canopy is your friend from what I have read. Great that you get to try different types of aircraft. Sounds like you were having fun.

Indeed, the rudder is used much more then the aileron in gliders. Every pilot that tries gliding for the first time completely messes it up cause they aren't used to using so much rudder
