Thanks! The wind is ripping again. I have been flying into maui recently and there always seems to be a calm area south of the island with a lot of whales. It is pretty hard getting up early, at least this time of the year sunrise is at 7. I try start looking for bait 45 minutes to an hour before sunrise to give me the best chance of finding and catching it. kzbin.info/door/B-4Uhk6woSf5Rd4A47bE6w

What a beautiful fish. So surprised it didn't break off the line when you held the spool with your hand. What pound line did you use? Guessing at least 40.
@FlyingFish_TV5 жыл бұрын
lol, I didn't full on stop the spool from moving. I agree that it is a horrible idea, I was using50 ft of 40lb mono. I have lost what I imagine was a bigger tuna doing that. It wasn't my hand holding the spool, but my hand being trapped between the spool and the kayak when the fish made a run with really tight drag. I think I still have the footage, I should make a video about it? kzbin.info

Would you ever use heavier tackle to try to get those big tuna in faster? Could help prevent sharks. Also, what will you do with the rainbow runner? Awesome video though.
@FlyingFish_TV5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I would use heavier tackle depending on the situation. I am using the heaviest gear I own, which is a heavy jigging rod and a 6000 size live liner reel. I have 65lb braid to 40 lb leader, but I will often use lighter line to get more action. Tomorrow I am going out with 25lb mono. I would use heavier gear if I knew I was going to be targeting 100+ lb tuna, but on the ledge you could get a 10lb or a 50lb tuna. I ended up giving that one to a friend of mine. I have caught more rainbow runners since then, and I think they taste pretty good. A lot of people like them as sashimi. kzbin.info/door/BlO3sNl_SYZn2dk_uDOFfw

Nothing shy of Amazing, I’ve probably asked this before but is that a 6000 Live Liner? Have you had any issues with the spool getting stuck on the shaft. I had a big run once and it must have heated up or something but it was hell getting it off and I had to sand down the shaft to get it working right again.
@FlyingFish_TV5 жыл бұрын
It is a 6000 size live liner. I haven't had that issue with mine. I have been beating the crap out of it for almost a year now with no major issues. It is due for an overhaul though. kzbin.info/door/id04lVM4tBS72O6RTwypUg

They make a bunch of different tiger rods. You can catch papio on the pelagic rods, but it won’t be much of a fight. I have a video catch a 10.5lb omilu on the same rod. That might give you some idea of what to expect.
