I just locked my Glock away in the safe after carrying it 20yrs+ opting to carry my new FN 509 midsize. He’s right in this vid, the FN 509 comes straight out the box with the things all us Glock carriers have spent hundreds of dollars to do to our Glocks and I like how the 509 feels in my hand more than my modified Glock grip. About a month ago my agencies approved list added the FNH FN509 series. Having carried a Glock 19 for quite sometime I was hoping to a more shall we say ergonomically pleasing option. The fn509 has not disappointed it does not need to stipple job out of the box. It has Quality Steel sights and the accuracy to me personally is better or at least above par than the Glock. The downside will be mags as they are at just a tad pricey at around $45 per magazine versus the Glock $26 per magazine. Overall I'm quite happy with the FN 509 and its performance thus far, plus finding a quality holster for work thankfully was not an issue. FN rifles do… but I don’t believe the 509 has seen any combat. I could be wrong, but I havent found any evidence of it. The 509 is awesome, but paying $800 for the tactical model and still having to buy an Apex Heavy Duty Striker because the stock one is well-known to break… kind of sucks. The fact that FN tells you not to dry fire is kind of lame as well, because many training exercises include dry firing in the absence of live fire. I remember in the police academy, they told us to dry fire all the time on our own time.

I realize this is an old video, but just wanted to say, first, great job breaking this info down. Second, I have carried a glock 19 for many years. I purchased my first 19 way back in the early 90's. Sold it a few years later. About seven years ago I bought a Gen 3 19. For the life of me, regardless of the training, time and ammo I put through that thing I can not shoot it as accurately as my Springfield XDM 10 mm. The Springfield has a much better trigger, of course, as well as grip angle, at least for me. But even with the additional recoil I shoot the 10mm better than that daggone Glock. Because of this I have decided to sell the Glock to my son and look into an FN 509 or some other mid-sized 9mm.

I even alternated +P and shit wolf ammo just as a torture test for a mag dump. Handled it like a champ. Every single FN product I have ever used was pure quality and reliability. I'm getting the 509 for my next pistol now that I made it through the struggles. I often told people if I had to trust my life on the line of a single piece of mechanical equipment it was that FN Pistol, and I have no regrets about that statement.

The Dark Earth color with black mag and slide releases looks so damn sexy too, and it's milled MOS for dot sights, and has night sights as well as a threaded barrel for a silencer. It's the kind of pistol you buy and don't need to buy any aftermarket parts for. Bad ass straight out of the box. Only thing I'd consider is an Apex flat trigger, but not completely necessary.

Reading through the comments, I notice a lot of “ Replace the Trigger” comments. The stock trigger is fine out of the box. Mine had some grit during take up and a little bit as it would break the shot, but it was a solid break. Fast forward, I considered doing replacing the trigger. However, I had a day off and was just looking at the pistol sitting on the table. I broke out a fingernail file and my Dremel. I took the entire pistol apart and filed each part smoother, removing any rough or excess material, including the barrel lug and striker housing and striker. Once everything was smoothed out, I used Mothers Metal Polish and my Dremel with a buffing pad to polish all of the parts to a pleasing shine. I resembled the pistol, with NO grit feeling throughout the trigger cycle. The trigger feels great with all stock parts. I’m sure I could reduce the weight of the trigger pull and make it just a hair better, by changing the springs for the sear assembly and striker block. Literally, it feels equal to or better than most of my striker fired pistols. The whole process didn’t take but a couple hours. The locking block pin is tight, but it’ll come out slowly. Going in was much easier. Everything else was much faster and relaxing. The finished product is what FN SHOULD HAVE already done. If their trigger felt like mine, I guarantee that they’d have way less trigger complaints. In fact, it would be a challenge to find anything negative about the pistol at all. All of my springs and parts are stock, but just smoothed out. You can have a really nice feeling trigger with what’s already provided. Not saying anything negative about Apex, they’re just not necessary.
@hambone700 Жыл бұрын
For what it’s worth, polishing the striker bore made the greatest difference. It was the last part that I polished. Before polishing the bore, I resembled the pistol and it still had some grit feeling. I then took the slide back off and decided to polish the bore. Reassembled the pistol and that’s when the trigger felt like a normal spring tension smoothness, without any grit or lack of smoothness. It goes right to the wall and breaks clean. This is mostly for anyone who’s thinking of polishing their internals. In hindsight, I wish I’d have started with the striker bore and reassembled the pistol to see how that, alone, felt. I noticed that when using an eyeglass screwdriver, I could feel machining scores in the bore. My thought is that the striker housing and spring were dragging those ridges, creating that familiar crunching trigger. If you choose to polish, try polishing just the striker bore first, and post if it changed it for you. I’m really curious about it.👍

My only complaint about the FN 509 I have is compared to the Glock if the FN gets wet it won’t operate where with the Glock it’ll still run while wet

I've been wanting the 509 Tactical model for a while as well as a G19. Funny though with all of the markedly better guns coming out the further I get from ever owning a G19 mainly due to the feature rich newer guns. I like your approach to the comparison and the honesty you bring to the table. So for now the G19 is still on my list to own but it has been pushed further down said list.

Do you still carry it? Which holster did you go with
@mykalbee Жыл бұрын
@fe2890 never carried the 509 Tac but the G19 often is carried in a generic shoulder holster.

Since this video came out FN has put out the 509 MRD-LE which is even better than the original. Not every civilian can get their hands on one, but I can, and I am tempted.

Thanks for all you do for the new and old firearms enthusiasts. Honest opinions is all that we need, not fluff and stuff. The innovations that firearm companies are releasing are making Glocks more boring and less desirable. Keep up the great work.

I buy a lot of CZs and S&Ws, but I always go back to my FN FNX. It just eats ammo

I bought the mid-size to be able to swap uppers with my tactical. Makes for a great carry gun with a red dot, if you are into that.

Thanks for that ... was wondering about the interchangeability and good to know.
@johns65685 жыл бұрын
No problem, just know that it doesn't seem like you can interchange barrels. I think the threaded barrel is a bit large in diameter.

I think even Glock people are really starting to question their beliefs. The more Shooting channels you hear “Glocks CAN be completely customized” as their advantage, what they really mean is “Glocks MUST be customized” to compete with many other offerings. So, the trigger, slide, and serrations, sights, grip, price, take down levers, ambi controls, better magazine ejector, better undercut, basically everything are all better on the 509. However, I can spend more to buy the base Glock and then spend another $1000+ for 2 ounces and to make the Glock probably as good??? Interesting... lol Glock perfection? Not anymore. Glock INFECTION! I have good news for you lost souls... There is modern medicine to cure your disease. 509 VP9 PPQ P10C 365 And on and on and on...

I have both guns, both are good guns. With the glock you pay 500 to 600 for the gun, then another 300 or 400 to customize. 509 good to go of the box. No amount of customizing will replace quality training and shooting.
@adamwelles55023 жыл бұрын
3-400 in upgrades? Huh what all are you doing to it? All you need to do is replace the stock sights, not all that other gay bullshit.

Great comparison! Comparing stock guns, the FN 509 looks better overall.

I would recommend for those with a larger than medium glove size to go by your local gun shop and window shop the FN509 before purchasing. I found the FN509 to be rather narrow in the grip. This is wear the Glock’s accessories market prevails. Need extra length or ammo capacity, Glock has an abundance of after market options available.
@jordanwiser41923 жыл бұрын
It carries 15+1, 17+1, or 24+1 with a more narrow grip than a glock
@mdx92863 жыл бұрын
@Jordan Wiser A lot has changed in two years. I have since gone all-in on the FNH product line. Swapping the FN striker for an Apex striker is critical. Once you've crossed that off the list, it is equal to, if not a slightly better offering.

I've never tried a 509. I love My 19C Gen 4. The only FN I've owned is The 5.7. Great video. I wouldn't hesitate to try a 509.

I have g19 gen 5 and FN 509 Only mod is sights on glock. I literally flipped a coin yesterday as to which I was going to the range with…love them both, only 1 year and 500+ through each, can’t decide.

Military Arms channel and Mrgunsngear did a reliability test with the 509 and it had some problems. Since these tests were conducted a while ago hopefully FN addressed these issues. I, for one place reliability above features.
