That peer pressure changed my oldest son's mind from putting in his SF packet. He felt he was abandoning his airborne unit. I told him if it's something you want then you can see if it's available when his reenlistment is up. A lot of old guys look back at our time in and wish we did more, Ranger or SF isn't for everyone, but it's for everyone to try and see if they can make it. Thanks for this video. This was a very good reality check topic Sean!

I'm 18 years old, I didn't know what to really do with myself because I lack strong passions for anything, but one thing I always knew was that I admired soldiers and I've always had a great sense of justice. I know the military isn't exactly a bunch of superheroes, but I figured that if I was gonna make a positive difference in the world then this would be my best shot, and I'm hoping that along the way I'll make great friends and also learn important skills and discipline through this journey. I've got a contract for 11X option 40, I leave for boot camp Jan 2 of next year right after new years; I'm nervous and pretty scared lol, but I'm also excited because I want to challenge myself and become stronger. My father was a Ranger and a Green Beret (32 year Army veteran) who lived in Texas before he died was and was completely duped/manipulated by a psychopathic female. I suppose they don't teach psychological operations to Green Berets. Dad was on his deathbed alone because she created a divide-and-conquer scenario as well as scheming to throw us off with the texts she sent us. More than anything it causes me so much agony to imagine what my father must have thought as to why his children were not at his side when he died. This female has committed 2 first degree felonies (that we know of so far) in Texas, she has played tidily winks with the Texas law enforcement agencies and court system and gotten away with wire fraud, bank fraud, and countless other crimes. We also believe her actions or inactions were purposeful in order to prevent my father from receiving care that would have saved his life. What is that saying, 'the enemy is amongst us?' Yes, so not only are we fighting our enemies abroad but they are right here in the USA - we have serious hurtful criminals and lack the expertise to do anything to make them stop or to bring them to justice. Please be careful out there, look out for your loved ones. If anything does not seem right, even the tinniest thing, examine that - don't let anyone tell you you are making too much out of an issue. That is how psychopaths prey on us, they know how we think and how to disarm us. Most of all PRAY!

Great vid Buck! Served in both RR and SF. Go RR if you're fresh out of HS or college and want to fast track to a spec ops unit. Experiences may vary, but it's like a version of the Marines in my opinion. There are things they're very good at and other things not so much. RR is good for the young and clueless to grow up in. I would say that after your first term of service, most would look elsewhere. The majority of RR are lower enlisted, and when you leave to PCS or ETS- you're just an 11B or whatever MOS. With the exception of the few who RR a career, and go on to other Tier units. Go SF if you're older or have a more mature outlook on life. Does SF do DA-yes. But it's missions are not as sexy at times and often not support by proper QRF or Air assets. There's a reason why you're paid much more as an E6 in SF than in RR. You're expected to solve your dilemmas and get the mission done. The main draw back I see in SF is that each Group, Bn and even down to Team levels at times have different cultures. RR share the same mentality across the BNs. Honest opinion- of you're want to try out with SMUs down the road, I'd recommend SF first.
@billyjacc Жыл бұрын
So you're saying the 75th is like the Marine Corps? Could you elaborate a bit?
@killersicks5826 Жыл бұрын
I think they're similar in the "every marine is a rifleman first" mentality. Ever ranger in regiment is a ranger first, having gone thru rip or rasp followed by whatever their mos is.

Buck, this brings me back all the way when I joined the Army, way back in 1987 as a junior in HS as a 11B1P13X. Needless to say, your 100% right on the age and drive. Back in my time, the Rangers were the terrorizes of behind the line TOC areas and "door kickers;" SF guys were counter-insugency experts and infiltrated to train insugencies, so the tended to be over the age of 27yrs and a lot more calm down. Usually, we had enough of the super high-tempo of operations and deployment and the next step was either SF or going to a light infantry unit. The ultimate tab was Delta. In my time we prayed to be invited to the pre-qualification.

Buck might be talking with a US military lense but as a young South African guy joining the army down here I still felt like he was talking to me. Being a former staff sergeant in the Danish army, I would definitely go Green Beret. To me, Rangers are "just" elite infantry raiders. That seems more of the same, but more intense in my opinion. I also think small patrols/ team is cooler way of operating. SF seems to have much more interesting missions... doing unconventional warfare seems a lot more interesting. However, personally I do not have the mental fortitude to do either... never had, never will. To be honest its just too hard. I can't cope with being that physically pressed all the time. Also, the 75th Ranger Regiment is not in itself T1. Only the RRC is considered T1.
@mitchellnelms75722 жыл бұрын
We were trained for raids, ambushes, and airfield search and seizure. Rangers are a deep insurgent guerrilla warfare unit. Special Forces are more of an early insertion and training unit for local militia. But, those were our missions in the 90's. How much has it changed in the last 30 years? Also, Delta was typically fed from Ranger units and we were direct support for Delta missions. I think Rangers and Delta are similar in mission and training. Either way, it was an honor to serve at the 2nd batt.

Its different nowadays. As a recon delta. We all went to one big 'cattle call' basic training, at the end of that the DIs came out (like full metal jacket really) "you go here you go there your mos is..." some went home we went to AIT. After that same thing only now we get OUR P.D.S. So Snider next to me says "smith what you get" So I told him recon at the garry owen whatever that is. I remember to this day his eyes got real wide and said "WOA dude way cool to the max". It made no sense to me. I figured all soldiers got this recon jack of all trades training. Most of my time I had no idea what a bad Mo Fo I was think that everyone trained this way.

Wow! That was fantastically informative, thank you for taking the time to explain the facts that often are overlooked (sometimes intentionally). As a South African, if I had the chance to pick either; it would be Ranger school and the 75th all the way. But that's nothing more than a semi-informed opinion. Even the 101st, 10th Mtn and 82nd deserve their place, you have some tough SB's that side of the pond ;) You're point on using other units as a stepping stone (which we know happens) is a very interesting one and absolutely resonated with me, hence my comment above about Ranger school. Either way neither Ranger School, Q Course, BUDS, A&S or any other are easy, it's that way for a reason. Same as RECCE selection here, you just want to want it badly enough. Have a blessed Easter.

Buck, appreciate your content. Rangers are great at what they do. However, the biggest question in my opinion when deciding to go SF or Ranger Regiment is whether you want the "team guy" lifestyle or the conventional army experience. There's pros and cons to both. Ranger regiment is a special ops unit; however, their day to day is very much like a conventional unit. They have a bigger budget and are assigned some great missions overseas and some great training, but it is very regular army. It's a weird dichotomy there. They push "special ops" or "cool guy" culture, but it is very regimented. It's very group think and individualism is very frowned upon. Saying you want to go to SF from regiment is very frowned upon as well but most leaders there. In SF, it's a small team hence "team guy" environment. More often you're treated like an adult, and entrusted to execute. This is great but it also lends itself to complacency. Each team room has their own mission set, and culture. Some times the Sf mission suck as opposed to being assigned DA missions. To a degree, group has its own conventional army "isms" but overall- it's a better life and opportunity. More pay, more advanced school opportunities and you'll get to see more behind the veil than rangers. Correction- rangers are not tier 1. Just a small element within. Not every ranger is equal in qualifications or ability or even job and position. Sf is no different. Each group, each team, and each specialty has their own unique personalities. Also- ranger school is just that a qualification--- but it is not a cake walk. It definitely is not for the faint of heart. Buck appreciate your outputs but I think more light should be shined on why regiment believes it's better than SF.

I would think it’s a lot of work to build the trust and bonded unit you want and must have to perform at such a high level and if there’s a guy with you who you know will be gone asap that really makes your group already weak and a weak lnk can be deadly!
@Mc007-2 жыл бұрын
I’m retired Ranger and I’ve seen young Ranger come in and want to special ops hop or think they can do that. However, keep in mind your chain of command and other Rangers that’s been there before you. Your chain of command will be the one to release you for selection. So, just gain experience and that will be a great addition to your SF packet. For a lot of you guys joining the regiment with critical MOS’s for example intelligence, civil affairs and medics it’s not a lot of support MOS’s coming through the selection pipeline. So, your command may want to hold on till there’s enough in your job description. Just be mindful of your commands needs.

They are both killers,door kicker and direct action since they are both special ops unit. Rangers kick doors then go home. SF kick doors kills then stay long time do unconventional stuff,teach,train with host country and do guirella tactics to kill again.SF is more broad in mission than Rangers.

@@amp776 med history of antidepressants. Apparently because the option 40 contract has the word "airborne" in its terms, I'm barred from signing it. The 18x contract allegedly circumvents that by not having the term "airborne" detailed in it, but I'll still need my recruiter to send in a form for me to attend airborne school. @@amp776 No, no skeletons that I'm aware of. At least none I haven't disclosed myself. I'm sure it may sound odd, but I chose to disclose my med history on that particular thing because, to me at least, being prescribed antidepressants becomes a question of character and mental fortitude. I have no qualms with the government digging around in my past. I'm a straight edge for the most part. Also, I wouldn't consider myself well educated. I come from public schooling. What little I do know, I've learned from books and conversation. One thing I can safely say from the little life experience I have is that I'm as much appreciative of my fighting countrymen as I am the books on my shelf. I forget which, but a Greek philosopher once said: "The state that separates its warriors from its scholars will have its fighting done by fools and its thinking done by cowards." I'm aspiring to this career field because I firmly believe that thinking doesn't affect change unless it's put into action, and action is hardly realized behind a desk.

The guys I hate are the guys that revere doing things the hard way as some sort of badge of badassness. Then you got the assholes who think just because they do one thing better than you, they are all of a sudden above you. And if they are in a leadership position (heaven forbid to be under this type of jackass) they are team/squad/platoon demotivators and suck the energy out of everyone for their own ego. "I can do a 12 minute 2-mile run! You guys need to pick it up!" Those are the guys that say they are "improving" the standard (but actually cutting joe's career short through injuries).

Currently deciding between which path to go down(SF or SR). Any insight as to who might be a good fit for which? Also, appreciate any info you can give on Special Recon's "actual" mission set.
@danielniffenegger76982 жыл бұрын
@@sadf526 everything I know is “second hand;” I’ve never served myself but I’ve been fascinated by special operations for years. Special Forces are “warrior diplomats;” they exist to work “by, through and with” the indigenous peoples, building relationships and using those relationships to build armies. They also have a Direct Action team that kicks down doors and do special reconnaissance. SR is Air Force. It grew out of Special Operations Weather Teams (yes, “weather commandos”). Their skill sets have expanded to be the premier specialists in environmental recon (weather, terrain, physical environment), small unmanned aerial vehicle systems, and remote sensors. Their mission set is more in line with Ranger Reconnaissance Detachment or Force Recon.

Just came back from a 4-hour work shift at a restaurant as a simple busser and I feel mentally and physically exhausted. Honestly, it is SO demotivating when something this small is enough to push me to my limits. I think about whether I should go Ranger or SF, but in reality, I think I should focus on preparing for 8-hour work shifts LOL...really demotivated. Quick vent aside, if I am able to make it past my hurdles(very extensive psychiatric history unfortunately) and get a waiver for the Army, I think maybe SF would be more of my calling. I'll probably have to wait a few years to try and join after I graduate High School due to being on SSRIs and stimulant shit right now, and I know the Army has a strict policy on needing to wait like 2 years after medication to even get waivered... Maybe I am being too negative, but I feel really discouraged from what I see as my biggest dreams.
