I turned 18 right before 9/11 and went open contract to get in ASAP. They changed my orders in the middle of basic and sent me to language school to learn Chinese. Got to learn that and got the free college. Hats off to the real vets in the chat and to Kurt and Sean. I did my 4 years, got the college money, and bailed. People pay $60k to learn Chinese at UCLA and it's still not even close to DLI level when you finish those 84 weeks of language school. Military taught me how to get good at paperwork, Powerpoint, bureaucracy, egos, and politics. Everything a corporate slave needs. 10/10 would do it again.

Bruh, you are a "real vet," if what you say is true. I've never heard of a linguist doing only 4 years, but open contract would do it (we joined at the same time, so I know the time frame you're talking about). I was the president of the SVA chapter at my college and I said the same thing to an airman veteran who felt that her service didn't compare to mine because she never deployed: We're all cogs in the machine. We sign a contract and, for all tense and purposes, we're subject to the will of the DoD. We all have a role to play. We're ants in a colony. Deployed troops rely on all faucets of the military. Without them, we'd be useless and combat ineffective. Tough love: stop feeling sorry for yourself because you didn't deploy. Be proud of your time and take the honor of being thanked for your service. Cheers, and thanks for your service. USMC 02-07 Iraq 04 & 05

@@Johnny_Cash_Flow I make fun of myself for doing 1 enlistment but to be honest I don't feel bad about it at all. I signed up for 4 years, I did everything they asked me to, and I got what I wanted. They were shocked I didn't want to re-up (especially after like 2 years of training) because most people who pick that job do want a career but not me. I say "real vet" as just a tease to myself but also to acknowledge that what I did, which was easy and quick, is not the same as Kurt and Sean who made it a career and put themselves in harms way more than me. Anyone who puts on a uniform has my respect no matter what they did. I just bash myself a little because I got a pretty sweet deal out of the whole thing and have a good career, largely based on the skills I got in the military followed by the free school that came later.

Intel MOS are kinda different. Yeah unless you are with group or thrown into a tactical situation you are most likely going to be super poging it up, but when you get out you can laugh in dollar bills from all the job offers that come in. People might talk shit when you are in, but I doubt anybody will talk after you got out. One of my best friends when I deployed was a 35f. We had an MOS immaterial deployment where everybody in our battalion served as glorified MPs and he was doing the same thing I was doing.

@@kimarhironso437 the only guys who called me POG and talked trash were guys fresh out of basic and new. The senior enlisted and officers always treated me good. I spoke 3 languages at the time and operated a lot of encryption equipment. So I was there in briefings for training exercises. Worked with some special operations teams but they were the guys mad because they were in Asia and Latin America instead of the Middle East. I had a great time and learned a lot. The languages alone were just so key. When I would brief officers made me good at public speaking and so now I don't care if I brief a CEO I don't get nervous at all. I love my fellow vets especially the career guys and my hats off to them. I try to give back by helping people navigate the VA and hiring as many veterans as I can which isn't easy in California.

Generation Kill is probably the most accurate depiction of modern warfare there is. They play Recon Marines but these guys could be any random Infantry company in any branch of service. It's spot on. It's funny because I first watched this series as civilian long before I joined and was shocked by the language and other things. Then I did the job for real and completely understood. 😎 All you guys wanting to join and be high-speed make sure you pay close attention to what Buck and Kurt talk about at the 12:00 mark. It will save you a lot of heartache. Don't let a recruiter tell you anything different.

I actually love the fact that you guys talk about the whole POG thing, I enlisted at 17 wanting to go combat arms but my parents wouldn't sign the contract unless I did something else. So my dad who was a 42A convinced my recruiter to give me something other than Infantry. I ended up going into Finance. I enjoyed my deployment due to the fact that I got to go to Syria and Iraq but back in the states I absolutely hated it because no one else had the same mentality as me. I was constantly called out for it and it just got to the point that I gave up on my entire career in. My unit wouldn't let me go do anything like Air Assault and Airborne school. It really weighed on my mental until I did what I had to do to get out with an Honorable Discharge

When it first aired, this show didn’t receive a good review from civilian. After joining the army and rewatching this show, I think the reason is because of its authenticity in portraying the military life. Civilians don’t understand or couldn’t believe this was how the military actually works, which is very different from other movies or news media portrayed.

About the sniper scene, I’ve read that the spotter will lie partially on the shooter for a few reasons. To get the spotter scope and rifle scope as close as possible so they’re seeing an identical image, then the pair will align and slow their breathing and heartbeats to the same rhythm. The spotter then knows when the shooter is physically ready to pull the trigger and will call on him to fire. You’ll notice the spotter (Rudi) doesn’t just have his leg over the shooter, he has his chest and arms partially over him as well.

Appreciate what you guys are doing with your mentorship program. Over the years I’ve gotten questions from young people who have wanted jinn because they were entering to become their family’s first generation. I was fortunate enough to come from a Navy legacy line dating back to the Interim War Years. Being the fourth generation of sons to serve, I had, at the time, my Grandfather (Corpman, Korean War) and my Father (Internal Communications, lifer of 20yrs, Cold War, Vietnam to Gulf War I, submarine force) to get mentorship from when I negotiated my contract. They educated me on what ratings (that’s MOS for all you land lubbing gravel agitators) not to take and the finer details of the recruiter operational space. Something else that helped as well was being a military dependent for 19 years (I repeated a couple of grades) and growing up hearing legacy stories and experiencing and knowing nothing really about civilian life. Miss it. Bravo Zulu on reacting to Generation Kill. It’s not easy finding Gulf War II vets to react to GK so we get their perspective on the series. WE LOVE YOU FRUITY RUDY! Heh. Take care guys.

We did a training exercise in Romania in 2001. One evening we were given permission to go out drinking in Bucharest. We were told to behave because of "diplomatic sensitivities." Long story short, I woke up the next morning in the barracks to be told that half a dozen guys from our company were "in jail" for starting a mini-riot in a residential area. Apparently they'd paid some hookers for business and the ladies took off with the money without providing their services. One of the guys arrested was the company sergeant major! FFS!!

Something that folks may want to realize is that GenKill was the VERY beginning of our very long GWOT war. Yet, much of knowledge of the military in general along with our judgement is based upon our RECENT impressions of the military. I was a young officer (Captain) in the Marine Corps at this time and I recall us being so "young", in experience, tactics, coordination, equipment quality, etc.... This is not meant to excuse any bad behavior or poor leadership.

I wish more people read, and then could understand your comment. I was in the Marines from 06-10. I went to Iraq and Afghanistan as an Amtracker (but we were turned into a rifle company in support of 3/7 in Iraq). In my experience Generation kill didn’t really resemble the officers I had. They were all amazing. Maybe I got lucky. But they worked very hard, were very selfless, and they were very smart. There was stupidity. But it seemed, compared to Generation Kill, that a lot of those issues had been ironed out or were much less of an issue. Not exactly what you were talking about, but I just feel the need to let people know my experience

I was in the Marine Corps recruitment office as soon as they opened up after 9/11. Told them I wanted payback. The SSGT. asked, "When do you want to go?" I replied, "Yesterday." The recruiter looked a little dumbfounded as he rushed to grab forms and an inkstick. I remember his hand was trembling (later realizing the immense pressure recruiters were under to get numbers. It must of been a slow month) That November (the 11th to be exact) I was on the yellow foot prints at MCRD San Diego. The Battle of Al Nazariyah was surreal. I paused the video as soon as you started talking about pogs, getting in and recruiters and all that. One of my buddies joined as a cook and he describes it the same way as you do Buck. I haven't really had much of the pog argument with anybody (I'm Artillery and we play along a lot with the Infantry). You guys are right, on the regular forces the grunt title is 95% of the times taken by the Infantry and according to them, then comes everything else. On the recruiting/joining side of the argument, do what you guys want to do, don't eat the recruiter bait in any sort of way (even the bonuses); you are not in until you sign the contract, so if they put shit on your contract that you don't want, you can decline and go look for another recruiter that can get you that shit. If you decline, you don't lose anything, the only one losing anything is the recruiter that lost a potential candidate to meet their monthly numbers (i'm pretty sure this is how it works). If you are about to go in, make sure you read the contract before you sign it; when I joined, I did a verification of my contract with a dod civilian employee at meps before I signed just to make sure everything I wanted in my contract was right. Bros, I fully support your channel, keep posting great content and all the insights; they are powerful tools for both current and future military!

I'm so glad you reviewed Generation Kill. It definitely brings back memories of 2005/06... I remember generally enjoying the series. ALSO, I'm not some sort of moralist, judgmental weirdo, but I really appreciate the fact that you guys are clearly cursing but that you're MUTING the questionable language. Like, I KNOW what you're saying, my brain fills in the details, but I don't necessarily need to hear it, and you guys can maybe help yourselves avoid getting de-monetized. At any rate, another great episode... I hope you never stop doing these. 💪🤙👍

Love this mini series. I am an 0313 - 0311 and was in New York fleet week 2009 and met the producers for the show. The details they put into this show and the research was kinda amazing. Even though the show had been out for a year they invited us to sit down and watch some of this show with them and do a post consult on LAR and the LAV's. How they were used and tactics and said that they would go in and fix any mistakes for future DVD releases if they messd up bad. That was for a unit that was only slightly featured so I can only imagine the care they took when getting Recon right.

The ammunition doesn't weld to the chamber of the rifle. In fact, the CIA did this during the Vietnam war. There was caches of 7.62x39 left by the U.S, designed to be found by the Vietcong. Inside, would be a majority of good ammo with a few rounds having the powder removed and a small explosive to replace it. It would explode the rifle right at the chamber.

The story about MOS and recruiters is interesting. Sometimes, people get caught in the opposite direction as well. I went through Infantry OSUT at Benning in early 90, and we had a guy in our platoon who we all thought was a Quaker. . .honestly. He had been told that he could basically sign for any MOS and switch once he swore in and reported. This poor guy. . .all he wanted to do was drive a truck, cook, type. He was willing to do anything as long as he didn't have to use or hold a rifle. If there was anyone I ever felt bad for, it was this guy. He wanted to serve, but he didn't want to fight. In talking with him, he was absolutely in awe of the guys (in 1990, literally, "the guys") who did the fighting. He didn't want to be one of them, he wanted to be one of they people in the background supporting the warriors.

Infantry references… I had a bunch of folks in my 92Y school who wanted to be regular army infantry but for some reason ended up 92Y… some even with the reserve contracts! One kid in my reserve unit wanted to be an infantry… he eventually had to go to college (didn’t plan initially)… chose the easiest degree… did ROTC… was given an active duty contract but as an 42 series. Fortunately he breached to infantry due to a shortage of 11A officers that year.

If you are looking into the military and are interested in combat arms. But you don't want to be a straight leg grunt. Look to 13F(Army) or 0861(USMC). You'll be a forward observer and get to do a lot of the grunt stuff while also getting a decent amount of respect. You're near the top of the POG class system.

Theres a whole seperate hierarchy in the Navy too, though the Navy has a lot of split off branches. Nucs (Nuclearl qualified Electricians, Machinists, Electronics Technicians and ELTs) are at the top of the Engineering/Nuclear Tree. Seals are atop a different tree. And it goes on according to branch of the Navy.

Apparently Captain America was not accurately portrayed in Generation Kill. He a apparently is highly intellectual, graduated from Princeton with triple major in mathematics, physics and computer science and was well liked by the enlisted men because he was not a by the book officer. He and the Company Commander Craig Schwetje butted heads publicly.

One of the MACV-SOG legends mentioned this, may have been in We Few that I just read or some KZbin video, that as soon as he saw the body of his mate, he told everyone to not touch it, “they booby trap them.” Some didn’t believe him, found it far fetched, but sure as shit there were X amount of grenades hooked up to the poor fella. Immediately thought of it when I heard Buck’s story. I think I’ve heard more than one SOG recon guy mention it: they booby trap shit. It worked in ‘68 too often, and it’ll work in 2024. Such solid advice, spot on. Didn’t think of it when I watched the show!

My brother served in Japan and crossed that line. Ended up getting body slammed knocked out by a larger Marine because no one could control him. He woke up in his barracks with no memory of what had happened the night before. First thing he does is go grab a beer. While he is drinking that he was told to report to his CO. He got off light because they liked him but he had a major concussion and wasn't able to fly for a month. He was air crew so not good. He was pissed because he missed out getting to go to Nepal for disaster relief. Sad part is the reason he got off so easy is because he joined the Marines at 28 and was the oldest fattest guy most of them knew. Everybody wanted to party with him.

"In war, if it's not yours don't touch it." That rule normally applies to us Brits too, but there's always one or two jokers who think they're different. After the Falkland War, some of our soldiers returned from the conflict with Argentine Colt 45's. One fella was caught with a set of his victims ears threaded through an army boot lace!! True story. Don't worry be happy.

About Gramps advice. Reminds me of one story I heard from a doc about the Italian campaign. This vet was clearing a house with his section and saw a HJ knife on a table, makes to go grab it. Corporal puts his arm out says "Hold on a second there kid." Picks up a roof tile and biffs it at the table through the window, BOOM! Looks at the guy and says "If you can find that knife you can have it."

Recruiter got me story: Tried to go in as a 13f. Was already old when I went in. Got to meps. Made it through fine but have an astigmatism. They WERE going to get me 13f. No deception there, but 13f requires you to have perfect vision. This is where the deception occurs. I said, "ok, just put me in the infantry." Recruiter was standing behind me and I was talking to the MEPS job guy. MEPS dude was like, alright, we always need infantry. But then he looked behind him at the recruiter (who was not the recruiter I had throughout the process but a new guy). Suddenly the meps guy shook his head, and was like, "well actually we don't have any infantry slots open at the moment. What about something else in field artillery?" Here was my problem. I knew that recruiters would try to screw you, and I researched the two mos I wanted to do to be sure I wanted to do them. My problem was, I didnt look at anything else to get closer to what I wanted. So when they started throwing out other MOS I had no idea what they were about. Recruiter came back with, "How about 13p, it is just like 13f." I thought fire direction control specialist sounded pretty similar to fire support specialist so they had to be similar right? GOT ME. 13p wasn't anything like 13f. It is FDC, literally the softest skill mos in FA. The recruiter also neglected to mention at the time FDC had a 40,000 dollar bonus which also sullied me to the whole thing when I got to Fort Sill and half of the people got the bonuse when they were awarded the MOS. It ended up working out. I hated 13p, but I deployed as a 13series that didn't take himars overseas, and then MTOE rearrangement allowed me to reclass as a 12b into a sapper company which is much closer to the stuff I wanted to be doing. I got out and am now rejoining, and am now REALLY old, but think I actually will go back as FDC because of age and bonus money. My advice: Recruiters are just trying to get you in, watch out for anything they say. Look at as many MOS as you can before you go in so if they do have to legitimately move you like in my case with the 13f, you know of another position you would like to do. It is ultimately YOUR job and maybe even your career. Don't see anything you like, don't pick a job and don't swear in.

Went to Mosul in 2004 riding around in the front and back of a 2 seater 998 with no armor and a pedestal mount and gun shield like I was shooting at Japanese aircraft at Midway, but I could see and hear/smell everything around me. Baghdad in 2009 in a 1114/1151 and MaxxPro Plus nametape defilade, better armor but limited visibility. Qalat in 2012 in a Stryker with mine roller and MATV and MaxxPro with CROWS as a passenger, even better armor but pretty much unaware of what was going on outside. Always a tradeoff and didn't like being closed off from the outside.
