Buck, given your thoughts on "Godfather" and higher officers in general (and I agree from my experience), may I suggest a song for you to listen to that fits. It's a song from Sting in 1985(?) called "Children's Crusade." It's more about WWI, but war is war and this shit is relevant every generation it seems, because we never learn.

Fun fact: Gunnery Sergeant Griego has a post out there on the internet where he basically complains at how he's depicted in this show and how he's actually such a hero. Just from reading it you can tell this was a perfect depiction, to the point that I literally heard it in the actor's voice.

One or two incompetent officers thrown in the mix is common knowledge in the military. Evan Wright, the journalist, wrote it from the perspective of the enlisted men and also on the account of what he experienced and saw during the early days of the operation 'Enduring Freedom' when he was with the 1st Recon Marine battalion. Depiction of Encino Man can be taken to be quite accurate.

Actually the guys GK is based off of talk about Griego, and say he's actually a solid guy and leader. You can find them talking about him by typing in Generation Kill reunion by Savage actual, I can't remember the spot they talk about him at, but I'd say it's somewhat near the half way point, either before or after

I wasn't recon, just a regular grunt, but this mini series %100 nails what life is like in the infantry, especially while on deployment. The blatant stupidity, higher-ups hyper focused on trivial shit, the boredom. It was just awesome to see something on the screen that reflects the reality of being deployed vs the usual bs that makes it look like we're in contact from the day we show up until we leave. Those dudes absolutely nailed their roles. It was like watching a legit documentary vs a major production.

One of the greatest shows HBO ever made. Susanna White was a brilliant director for this, told this deeply personal, intimate and real story with all of these guys that were there incredibly objectively, almost like documentary footage. Super important story to tell with a lot to say about PTSD and the nature of professional military life. I’m glad they were all able to speak their parts about their life experience, be it actually as themselves or through the actors they worked with and in a way that was so realistic. Sad this show isn’t talked about as much, it should be discussed as much and known as the realistic application of all the stuff Kubrick talked about in Full Metal Jacket

I once had to pull our Lt aside to have a heated discussion, after one of our patrols in Afghanistan. One of my Marines lost his PEQ-15 during an engagement. Straight loosened up & fell off his M4. The young officer wanted me to write him up, as I was his platoon commander. (I was a SSgt filling that billet). I wasn’t having it. Not with all the bullshit my guys were dealing with on patrols. Intense back & forth ensued & the Lt threatened me with a “Non-punitive Letter of Caution” if I didn’t comply. Well, I didn’t comply & got MY write up, but never backed down when it came to defending my guys, if they weren’t in the wrong. Leaders that stand up to bad leadership, are worth their weight in gold. Never be afraid to take a reaming for your guys, when they put so much on the line for the team.

The really shit officers make you respect and really appreciate the good ones, but they are few and far between. So quick to write you up for any little thing, but when it comes to recognition they downplay and lower awards, especially true if they themselves dont have that award. Same with non-coms, a really good NCO is like the black-watch on game of thrones. "The Shield that Guards the Realms of Men". 😂. On deploymentz we always thought to ourselves, "Just give us shit we need and get out of our way." Thank you for being a good one. Hope you made at least Gunny.

I was in the Marines for 8 years during this time period and when asked what movie/show best represents the Marine Corps I served in I tell them Generation Kill and its not even close. This show perfectly shows the mentality of the officer/snco ranks of the corps and shows why I got out after 1 re-enlistment. I was 17 in bootcamp and was one motivated little boot that planned on doing 20 years but by the time I hit SGT and started spending more time in Staff Nco / Officer meetings ect, I quickly realized that most of what we were taught was BS. I dont regret my time but the military is not what people think it is.

I did a lot of joint service work when I was in the Navy. For a while I worked and lived with a lot of Marines. Some of them were real out there man. Like one dude he was put on landscaping or something and he'd just stare off and talk about how glad he was to be able to "keep the grounds clean and looking good for other Marines." And he wasn't joking, he was a true believer. No other branch had true believers like the Marines. I got along with Army dudes and Air Force women more than anyone.

My Dad told me of a story when he was a sergeant with the Mike Force in Vietnam. A unit was under fire in a village and my dad's unit was some distance away hearing what was going on. The fire was sporadic, not heavy. The officer told my dad to get the unit formed and head down the road immediately. My dad wanted to put out flankers to make sure they were not ambushed. There was some back and forth between them and the officer "relived" my dad and tried to get another sergeant to get the unit moving. That sergeant and the indigenous soldiers refused to move without flankers, so flankers were put out and they moved down the road.

Jocko said the same. He had a platoon leader on his show and normally Jocko doesn't talk about himself. He prefers to talk intangibles and concepts; basically the philosophy of leadership. But somebody mentioned being given an "all go" on people in Ramadi to which he shook his head that he didn't want to talk about it but then laughed and said "yeah we were allegedly told to kill 'em all but some people disagree that that order came through..... but it was kill 'em all so I told my guys before every mission, 'they better be a bad guy if you pull the trigger.'" Your soul is in your own keeping. Glad you guys exercised discipline. Not that what I think matters. Just saying.

I really like you both giving background to real life experiences and some explanation why. I am fascinated on the little things that go on in the military that the average person wouldn't know. I would like someone to explain; When an officer gives and order, I thought the subordinates are supposed to follow that order no matter what. Otherwise those soldiers could be up on charges... right? The comment was that if the order is stupid or going to cause death, that it was ok to not follow those orders. I am really curious about that. In Band of Brothers Winters opts for a court marshal rather than have his rep tarnished. Again... really curious because how many good officers are out there? 1 in 10? 1 in 50?

I love GK so goddam much. I just wish I'd have discovered it sooner. This show came out at a time when it was real popular to make "I hate Bush, soldiers are stupid, fuck the war, Imma make an edgy movie" crap. So when I saw the poster or whatever, and all I had to go on was "okay, they put 'kill' right in the title and haha let's all laugh at the unprofessional-ass Marine with his Elvis sunglasses"... I figured it was more of the same, and ignored it for about a decade. Then I started seeing random YT vids about what a great series it was and how vets love the shit out of it, so I gave it a shot. The Matilda scenes in E1 kinda reminded me of Kandahar, "it's hot and this sucks and this douche over here is an idiot and goddammit this is boring and it's hot and this sucks." By the time they got to the endless-ride-in-Humvees-FIGHT-endless-ride-in-Humvees-FIGHT-endless-ride part, I was hooked. Think I got through like five episodes that night, and was pissed 'cuz it was 4AM and I couldn't watch the last two. So damn good. Oh, and I can't remember which episode it is, but when y'all were talking about laughing at dipshit officers behind their backs, I was hoping we'd see the "Meesh, tell the nice man I'm about to shit in my panties" scene was coming up lol ...and speaking for the stand-up wipers, I can tell when dribbly shits might happen and I plan accordingly. Captain America Tropic Thunder reference, hilarious! Continuing with the Simple Jack imitation, very funny. That gut that played Captain America was a semi regular on Malcolm in the Middle. Keep up the great work! Look forward to your new critiques every Sunday.

Dude, could you talk about the jokes and pranks in SF or in the military in general. Inside any group (seal, SF, rangers, firefighters, so on) there is always jokes and pranks, and you need to know how to navigate those waters. Good luck bro.
