Wizards of the Coast tried something similar (but worse) for Magics 30th anniversary, 4 booster packs of non-tournament legal reprints of the original set, all for the bargain price of $1000. The fact that the energies are the only thing tournament legal means that the energies themselves are actually pretty cheap despite looking cool (probably since many people think they're illegal). I bought 8 water and 1 lightning for my chien-pao deck almost a year ago for like 6 bucks total and they're really nice.

I also believe that the trainer cards that are in the current rotation are also legal to use as long as they match the most recent version of that card.

the pokemon TCG official tournaments work on rotating cards ATM only some sword and sheild sets and all scarlet and violet decks are legal in play and since those cards are "old" you would be able to play them since none of those cards are in those sets (the box is expensive for no reason i wish it was cheaper)

@nicocchi5 күн бұрын
The reason why these cards are not tournament legal in case no one else pointed it out, is because old Pokémon cards are hopelessly powercrept, old Trainers are unfathomably broken, and some of them have effects that are the same as cards of different name, so you'd be able to get around the "only 4 copies per deck" rule. For instance, Prof. Juniper and Prof. Sycamore both have the same effect as Professor's Research that's been released since as a way to not have to remember a massive list of cards that can't be played together; "Discard your hand and draw 7 cards". In fact, the rule is strict in that you can't play a Prof. Juniper, a Prof. Sycamore and two Prof. Research to have 4 in total, it's either one or the other. However, for Prof. Research you can have whatever mix you want-they might feature different characters in the artwork but they have the same name. The same goes for Lysandre and Boss Order's cards! Another notable card is Rocket's Admin, it does the same thing as N. N isn't legal in Standard, but he is in Expanded. Then there's Computer Search, which once again has been out of the Standard rotation for years, but is available in Expanded as an ACE SPEC card, which you may only have one in your entire deck. I believe there's a rule somewhere that says the Computer Search released in Black & White counts as an errata and won't allow you to use the old Computer Search as a stand-in for its ACE SPEC version but I'm not sure. As for the rest of the cards like Ultra Ball, Switch, etc., whose text is identical to their current Standard iterations, and as such you could use any reprint of it for cosmetic reasons, I guess they disallowed them just to not make an absolute mess of cards that are legal and others that aren't. Oh also, Double Colorless Energy is literally Double Turbo Energy but better-the latter will give you two colorless energy just the same, but will also nerf your damage by 20. I guess it falls into the category of "old Trainers are unfathomably broken" despite being an energy. Edit: I suppose the metallic marbles are supposed to be stand-ins for coin flips
@jaynekogames4 күн бұрын
I don't think anyone expected the vintage cards in the deck to be tournament legal. It's just weird that all the "still in rotation" trainer cards are not tournament legal for an arbitrary reason. Interestingly (if I'm remembering correctly), I believe Andrew Mahone said any relevant reprints would actually be legal for GLC.

@@jaynekogames The issue is that these cards lack regulation marks. While older prints of cards without regulation marks, or with illegal regulation marks, are allowed as long as there's a card with the same name and a legal regulation mark in the relevant format, newer prints of cards don't get that same treatment. Since this came out in 2023, that bars it from play. It's an issue of needing precise wording in the rules to avoid ambiguity and prevent unintended consequences.

They should have focused on reprinting only from the Base set, or from Base, Jungle, and Fossil as they were back then (they aren't tournament legal, what's the point of updating). If they had done that, then they could have turned this into a series of collectable products. If they had more of a long game plan, then the price may not have been so high either. Instead, since they botched this up so badly, they'll make something like this ever again.

I found that thing while looking for a christmas gift yesterday and I was like "Holy shit I've never seen something like this before, I wonder what the official name is" and then I see this video a day later... is the algorithm stalking me? T_T Also it was 500 euros....

The fact that my local gaming cafe actually has the accessories like the counters and the playmat, but is selling them separately as unpacked individual products, speaks volumes about how extortionate this set is. And as for the marble thing in the middle, I'm guessing it's meant to be like an over elaborate replacement for the coin-flip mechanic, so 2 holes for the marble are Heads and the others are Tails?

What I don’t like about the product is how Suicune, Ho-oh, and Lugia ex are brand new ex cards you can’t use at all. The Suicune would be so good in standard. It shouldn’t be $400

For an all in 1 TCG starter box with the energy's, playmat, and stuff to not even be usable in competition totally defeats the purpose. It's insane
@Soaring_Penguin2 күн бұрын
I know a LOT of people who would happily throw $400 at a reprint collection of the original Base, Jungle, Fossil and Rocket sets. That fits well with $100 per set. Don't even make them playable decks (that aren't tournament legal anyway, lmao), just reprint the sets. I'd be so mad paying $400 for this box that was advertised as a "vintage collection", and then find out that there are like a dozen cards that are actually vintage 😂

Dude they should do it like yugioh and reprint the og sets. Theyd print money.

I'm also going to say that I'm a young collector I started off by collecting from McDonald's. I still do from time to time, they feel thinner. Those are probably McDonald's quality Pokémon cards that are reprints of x. Y evolutions, which is just insane. Especially when you're paying four hundred dollars for them

I agree that this product was super overpriced and totally not worth it, but I was a touch sour about two things. 1) Lugia being attached to Venusaur makes sense because there are no Fire-Water-Grass Legendary Trios, and Lugia Ho-Oh Suicide gives strong Gen2/Johto vibes. It being Colorless helps. 2) It hurt when you couldn't identify the Coin-Flip Bowl ('cuz I thought it was cool), and then said "Kinda like Beyblade" out of confusion ('cuz I like Beyblade).

DO NOT PAY MSRP I just bought mine from a liquidation place for about 173 USD. (250 Canadian, which is also what Costco is selling it for surprise!) And of course it’s in liquidation places! Who tf thought that price point was a good idea?

Oh so THATS what this thing is, the local game store over here has had this thing on a top shelf, looming over us like a dark monolith that noone dares to touch, now i know why nobody has, this things not worth it. I think this thing could have been 2 products, the classic deck collection & the playfield ( honestly i want that more than the cards lol)
@Dinowrestler4 күн бұрын
$400 is a bad joke. They should have given you a play set of all the icon cards, But YOU ONLY GET 1 OF EACH!!! This set isn't WORTH $100

The ex cards make these decks genuinely unfun to actually play. it just boils down to whoever gets the ex first wins.

As a casual tcg player and lover of Nintendo collectables, this product feels like it was made for me, but i hate that it is dummy expensive and i wish it kept like a retro style

Even 150$ would have been a salty price. 3 decks 20$ each. Fancy counters, 100$ altogether at most.
@blackshadow8041Күн бұрын
To be honest, if you want most cards (at least most of the most important ones), you don't save much from 250$ by buying singles.

They are very pretty, I love the look and nostalgia factor. But the cost is way too high. Yugioh’s Duel Devastator box is honestly to me this concept done well. Meta cards usable in tournament play in beautiful holo form. Some people complain about the price, but $80 is a hell of a lot cheaper than the $400 for this. I’m sure people would happily pay for holo versions of the decks that won worlds this year. But they insist on making people pull from packs because they gotta make that money.

>Not Tournament Legal >Makes changes to certain cards to make them more balanced and in-line with the game in it's modern state. PICK. ONE. You can't release a nostalgia product and advertise it as such whilst invariably altering it to be a modern-day game product. Absolutely everyone who did buy into this would expect the Blastoise Deck to be a horrifically busted Rain Dance mill-machine stuffed with Professor Oak, Bill, and Energy Retrieval and absolutely expect it to work that way. God no wonder nobody liked this thing, not only is it overpriced, it insults the exact demographic it was aiming for!
@Nightmare_NPC4 күн бұрын
I bought this on sale about the same price as you. I was eyeing the product for the practical elements the counters and play area. The proxy decks for me are just fun extras for casual games. I don’t regret spending about 250 but I agree it’s not worth 400. I would only pay full price if the cards were tournament legal.

I wish they’d just do what they did with Evolutions again and reprint an old base set with additions for the new gimicks. I’d love to see a full reprint of Neo Genesis, or of exRuby&Sapphire.

Suicune, Ho-Oh, and Lugia and Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur. Suicune and Blastoise are both Water and Ho-Oh and Charizard are both Fire. Lugia got paired with Venusaur by process of elimination.

This is such a spectacularly confused product that it should be a classroom example of what not to do. The wasted space in the packaging, the cheap feeling cards, and the arbitrary deck design that looks more what you would expect from the very start. It was made with neither respect to the competitive side of the game nor the collectors. Being generous this should have been maybe double the price of the world championship decks because of the holofoil, but that would still put this at maybe 100 dollars, 120 with the box. I'm glad some people are able to find joy in these, but wow I had hopes they would use it as a way to either try a classic battle format or even just revive some old art that's unreasonable to get on the grey market. Make it some sort of a yearly celebration. And they did nothing of the sort.
@ShadowRod19882 күн бұрын
The whole point for the product makes no sense, for a collector is full of garbage cards, even when thinking for a deck you don't need that many copies of oak or bill, the real good cards only come for one stupid copy per deck. For someone that wanted to play the decks it sucks that the most important cards come in only one copy, not even the good trainers get more copies, not even for consistency the only cards that come in 2 copies are the basic and 1st stage. There is no way you could justify any reason on why the product was made this way. This is a total scam.

$250 usd is still over priced. The Canadian costco has it for $250 cad and there's no tax right now. So about $170 USD. One store even has it for $200 cad but no locations are near me.
@PopcornMax1795 күн бұрын
Good idea. But the price and marketing it as a premium product is all wrong. They should release plentiful supply, seperate decks for at most $40, with a similar box with art and booklets and coins reminiscent of the classic WotC premade decks. It might be a loss leading product at a low price, but it's going to drive intrest and new customers to the TCG.
@HausOfKraus7162 күн бұрын
It clearly doesn't sell for $400 anymore (except at GameStop, big surprise) and the Charizard sells for $100 🤷🏻♂️ Wish they did all vintage art on cards tho. It's literally called Pokémon Classic. "Save a bunch of money and buy the vintage stuff." Do you know how much the vintage stuff costs?? "I paid $250 for this... but there is no way this is worth $400." Okay, bro... Whatever you say.
