In this new series, we look at how to make foamboard ruins for cityfight and other urban combat games. In this first tutorial, we're looking at planning your builds and some techniques to simplify the basic cuts required to make the ruins.

That great! My 1x2 metres of Foamboard approve. If you could do sth about how to handle Foamboard warping sometime, that'd be great, too!

Good vid there mate - I like that you put the emphasis on doing accurate plans for projects such as this. It really is vital. Nice one buddy!

TheTerrainTutor Where do you get this foam board? I checked at the home improvement store and they seemed rather expensive.

Tim Roberts Hobbycraft sell it along with many other stores both B&M's and online. An A1 sheet will set you back about 6 or 7 pounds. Keep your eyes open though as I've managed to get it a couple of times on a BOGOF offer (buy one get one free). Happy hunting! :)

Great video, looking forward to seeing this develop thank you. Is there any chance of a short vid talking through some practical ways of working out how high/wide a door or window ought to be to keep it generally in scale? So for example Warmachine figures are on the big side for 28/30mm and don't always look right against true 28mm scenery - particularly if the doors are a little short.

Cheers. Funny enough, that fits in well with what I'm recording at the moment so I'll put it in mate.

I tend to use SketchUp with most builds. Just my OCD taking over and my tight fistedness about maybe screwing up and wasting 50 pence. It also allows me to get full 360 of my piece allowing me to make sure I am happy with the final design and if I ever want to remake the piece I still have the plans. Otherwise though I plan the same way as you do except my graph paper is SketchUp. Pins are a great idea, I'm stealing that! Lego, the terrain builders best friend. Something I (occasionally) do with a foam-board build is to make my side walls 5mm (front wall build only) or 10mm (front and rear) longer than needed. Then on my front and rear wall I trim back 5mm on each side, but don't cut all the way through. The aim is to have 5mm of paper left over (no foam) to buttress the side wall against. It then hides the unsightly cut foam that you are left with on some walls. Its quite footery and depending on what coating is going over the build not always worth it. Hope that made sense. Really good tutorial, very clear and easy to follow. Thank you.

I've seen a few people use CAD programs but I've never felt the impulsion to try it mate, I kind of old school like that. I like the tactile feel of it and the idea I can have it next to me and rub bits out and change it on the fly. Each to there own matey. Steal away! and yes, I love my Lego! I've seen a few people do the same and it works really well, can you do a vid of the practicalities of doing it please mate? Thanks

Maybe I'm over thinking this but was trying to see if 1square was 5mm that I could just count the squres on your plans but it doesn't quite add up. How big is your grid?

Great video mate, really good over view of plans, and your right most of the time Terrain Artists just wing it, i do it myself, for big projects mine are all worked out in turbo CAD and then cinema 4D, really nice to see hand drawings that any one can do. right now this part "I know you don't need to plan, but would rather you know to plan and not need to plan, than need to plan and not know how to plan" how many takes did it take you to get that right as that's a tongue twister and a half lol. Stay safe mate looking forward to the next parts :D

@@TheTerrainTutor I would say 28mm is about 1:56, but that seems way too small. One floor would be about 3-4cm then. What scale would you say 28mm is?

The idea with the pins is very good. Did you cut into the table, when handling the big piece of foamboard? What does your wife say? :D With the bases inside the building, you have a kind of step in the entry and the backside. That is always my problem with building bases, but without there is no floor and it looks pretty poor. I've made a few buildings with bases that are bigger than the ground area and flattened the edges, but than it looks like the building was not part of the scenery around it and it looks a bit elevated.
@TheTerrainTutor
@TheTerrainTutor 10 жыл бұрын
I've occasionally cut into things or stained them, my wife's been married to me for over 14 years now so she's kind of used to it. I like putting the bases in for stability and also the foamboard lets me add damage to it etc. Keep watching, you'll see what I mean and how I'll handle the steps matey.
