Nature takes care of nature. The eggs will feed and sustain other forms of life, be it ravens, flying squirrels, insects or other critters.
It appears one eggshell lost its structural integrity and broke by 7:52AM. By 11:40AM the egg crumbled further and disappeared from view. It likely remains in the bowl.
It is uncertain whether Jackie stepped on the egg at 7:13AM and breached it. She stopped incubating on 4/8 and she could be moving less carefully around the eggs. It is unclear if there was any development inside. We will watch to see whether more information presents itself.
In a surprise turn of events, Jackie showed up after dark at 7:48PM and vigorously aerated the nest bowl, effectively hiding the remaining two eggs from the camera view. They remain in the bowl and may reappear later.
Both Jackie and Shadow spend the night together on one of their favorite roost trees. The Night Vision image at 8PM+ is grainy as it was already very dark.
♀Mommy Duty Report:Jackie attended the nest for 8 min, 2 visit(s). She was last seen incubating or tending the eggs on 4/8.
♂Daddy Duty Report: Shadow attended the nest for 8 hr 18 min, 5 visit(s). He did not attempt to incubate the remaining 2 eggs after the third egg disappeared from view.

🥚Egg1 was laid 1/25 16:55 bit.ly/48OfNt5, Egg2 was laid 1/28 13:59 bit.ly/3OkpEi7, Egg3 was laid on 1/31 17:58 bit.ly/3SGTwb5 .
It is unlikely that the eggs will hatch at this point. We have no way of knowing why. It could be environmental, such as temperatures, humidity percentages, oxygen levels at high altitude, etc. It could be biological with something just being off at the time the eggs were created. It is very unlikely that either Jackie or Shadow are infertile since they have already had 2 sets of chicks together - in 2019 and 2022.

I knew it would be you, Cali, to bring us the whole story of the events today! The beginning of the end, the middle,Shadow grieving and accepting that the eggs are gone, and sweet Jackie, burying the other two! I think she did that out of love, to make sure Shadow did not come back. Which he didn’t. And they seemed so sweet together in the trees afterwards, and I love the little song that they sang after Jackie buried the eggs. Thank you, Cali, for always bringing us great footage of the whole story! And thank you, friends of big Bear Valley, and all the volunteers who bring us these magnificent birds! I have no doubt whatsoever that I just watched two loving, dedicated, incredibly selfless parents grieving for their loss. The final gesture of burial with a hearts prayer sung into the night afterwards was like witnessing their sense of closure. Such sweet sorrow. 💔 I hope their next batch will be rewarding for them.

That was heart-wrenching but it needed to happen. Shadow's grief was apparent but he will move on now, I was surprised to see Jackie cover them up the way she did. Their nighttime chortles were so sweet, I've missed hearing that, and seeing them in their roost tree was sweeter still. 😢 I've been watching for over 4 yrs and this has to be one of the most emotional videos I've watched. I did see Jackie peck at the broken egg, sit on the eggs for most of the morning, then bury them and chattering with Shadow as to say it will be alright. 😭💔 I pray for their safety and new clutch! She may have covered them to help Shadow move on, or she may have covered them to prevent predators like ravens being attracted to the nest. If she pushed the nonviable eggs from the nest to the ground below, ground predators would be attracted to the smell and know the location of the nest. If they are buried, they may be gradually crushed and become a part of the nest as they are buried by next year's fluff.

They went through this same thing last year. Hard on the heart to watch for sure. Jackie left nest first. Shadow, well it took some time but he finally accepted it. Looked like one egg may have been struck by a stick at 7:13am. Almost lost it when at 7:52am Shadow returned, noticed the crack, stared intently as if expecting a chick, then tenderly rolled the eggs before sitting. Wow, their story is like a movie script and you captured it so well. ❤️ The way it ends with them both leaving the nest, Jackie doing the final farewell at night, followed by their immediate calls to each other, and finally sitting together in the roost tree. Aside from their non-viable eggs, everything about these two is just so perfect. (Though there is beauty in the imperfection, as well) Very interesting the way that Shadow inspected the eggs and the remains of the broken egg. Seems like he’s trying to make sure that nothing came out of it. That he’s not missing an eaglet. Also interesting that that one broken egg triggered something in him that lead him to leave the other two eggs. Wish my two fave birds luck next season. See you next year! 🍀

Can’t help but be emotional watching Shadow, seemingly sad looking down at the eggs. Then Jackie comes to nest to hide the eggs, wow, that was something you see only in animated movies. I've been watching since the pandemic, and it's hurt every time the eggs have failed to hatch... I stopped myself from watching too often when it was clear these eggs weren't meant to be - seeing the withdrawal process in real time would've been too heartbreaking for me... So I was pleasantly surprised with how cathartic it felt to watch this video! I believe everything happens for a reason. And I don't even want to imagine how difficult it would've been for Jackie and Shadow to protect three babies from all the crazy weather they'd been having... But we know they had amazing Spirit. And I still can't stop myself from having hope that this season isn't over 😊...

When Jackie brought the stick with the pine needles on the end, she whacked the egg accidentally. Those eggs were way past their prime and likely would have broken soon anyway. I am so sad for Shadow, but I'm glad that he has Jackie.

I can see egg inside color green, obviously died! Not too good! 😢 Now, Jackie cover two eggs as grave. So now Shadow now know that eggs are died, father Eagle let eggs go.. Shadow make me cry, I can feel Shadow grieves but he will get other one next year!

The green tint is likely the inner egg membrane. All things appear dark in the morning due to the way the sun shines into the camera. Unfortunately, we did not have a chance to take a look at the broken egg later in the day.

The one little eaglet did start to hatch. Folks said they heard it peep and that Jackie answered. At the time, the background noise was so loud I didn’t hear the peep, only Jackie. For whatever reason, the little eaglet couldn’t finish hatching, but at some point you could its feathers sticking out of the little hole it made. Eventually, it broke quire a bit. So I’m guessing, the poor thing was fully formed, but couldn’t manage to get out of the egg.

However, the Sauces nest, located just 100 miles away from Big Bear, laid another clutch yesterday. They have laid their first egg on 2/2 and also went through the full time incubation. Nature is amazing - expect the unexpected! 🙃

Me, too! They have had every opportunity to scavenge the eggs. They were around while both J&S were ON the nest, but besides that one raven that checked out the eggs a few days ago, none have come to breach the eggs. Very different behavior from years past with non-viable eggs. I would like to see them come now and finish off the remaining eggs so they can feed their chicks. Nothing goes to waste in nature. Circle of life!

That what I read from google information about that same net is Shadow and Jackie's home forever and couple stay together forever never spit, I called them marriage 😄, very interesting! One either Shadow or Jackie died, one of them won't get new boyfriend or girlfriend for a year ( that's their mourning and very greif) then move on to find new girlfriend or boyfriend. Wow! I courage you check it out at google for more information about eagles culture..

shade and Jackie never never spit, they're very strong bond. I called them a marriage 😄.. I courage you to look up google about eagles culture, very interesting! ( I learned lot) One thing I learned about either Shadow or Jackie died that he or she will not get other partner for a year due their mourning and very grief. A year later he or she will find new one or never, up to her or him.. Anyway, Jackie will get other pregnant with Shadow next year! I'm forward for Shadow and Jackie got eaglets, can't wait! 🤗

This is absolutely heartbreaking. To watch Jackie cover up the last 2 eggs to help Shadow grieve goes above and beyond any love I have ever seen in the animal kingdom. Why couldn’t Jackie and Shadow have these 3 babies? They are so deserving. They worked so hard and went through hell for these babies. These two beings have hearts and souls. They are hurting. I have watched Spirit’s video over and over and how Jackie protects her during the storm. Rips my heart out. Please Nature give Jackie and Shadow viable eggs next year. Be safe in the off season together. We all love you dearly! Heal your hearts sweet Eagles! 😢❤

Makes me wonder if Jackie was purposely careless with that stick, just to help Shadow finally process the loss…? Last night it looked like he was trying to bury (or even break?) the other eggs. This morning some shells were barely visible, having been unattended all night. I'm so sorry, Shadow. I know you were really hoping to care for more hatchlings. 💔

The remains of the broken shell crumbled under Shadow and became part of the nest.

Where did the third egg go?! Shadow the steed on all three at the video time 16:35 but then it shows a video skip and then shadow gets up and now there are two old eggs.

My internet went down on Thursday so I’m catching up. Can someone tell me what happened to the broken egg? It looked like Shadow incubated all three, then the video fast forwarded and when he got up, only two eggs were in the nest. Can someone fill me in on what happened to the broken egg?

Last chat they stated Jackie is fertile January to March so unfortunately, they won't lay again till around that time
