Hey Whats Up. Very welcome. I think it is important that people realize that every method can have good and bad outcomes. All in all, I think the result was great. I got a decent number to root using my default substrate. And I learned that for me, coco peat is not so good.

I had 5 cutting going in vermiculite like you explained in your video. And I got 3 out of 5 rooted, 2 of them with nice spreading roots and 1 with one small root. Cuttings…, plants… or (far)future bonsai! Thanks for your advise, this where my first successful cuttings from my Japanese maple! 👍👊

Great result Jelle, and also a great demonstration of why we use granular soil, even to propagate cuttings. I wonder if the coconut was starving them of oxygen? Though not entirely because obviously one of them struck.

Hey Matt, no good reasons here. Just.. Follow-up video for people to see, as I had soo many questions. On the other hand, no real downside either. These will continu to grow roots well into december unless we get frost beforehand.

Very nice little update. Cool that you are testing different medium's to see which will work best for you. Do you think the species of cutting would vary different results in different mediums?

Hi Bobcat, species * substrate will certainly be a factor. What works for Japanese maples, might not work for junipers or olives. In the end, most plants will need the same basic things to root, but maybe in different rations (How dry/wet, how much air / substrate etc)

How long did you keep the cuttings locked up in the baggie? What did you do after, still put it in full shadow or did you allow some sun exposure? Cuttings I took this spring don't seem to be a huge success :(.

SOme 2-3 months I suppose. I put them in a spot with about 1 hour of morning sun.

i had good success rooting in a coco coir/perlite mix(about 50/50). give the cups a strong downward motion to release excess water after watering, dip cuttings in hormone and then stick. if your taking cuttings right when you see the buds waking up or after new growth has hardened off, washing them off with hydrogen peroxide before doing anything has cut down a lot on losses from fungus. keep cuttings under a dome till new growth starts. i like using the 10 by 20 propagation trays with the tall domes so i have plenty of air/humidity and no gas build up. 🖖

Thank you, it was nice to know that my previous failed ones in peat were normal. Just wondering, do you face any mould issues when using the bag? Mine would fill up with blight after a few weeks. Perhaps because I live in a humid area, not too sure.

I think your problem was using peat as a growing/cutting medium. peat retains too much moisture and does not allow enough air flow or drainage therefore producing the perfect environment for moulds. There are many substitutes that can be used for cuttings, here are a few; Vermiculite, perlite, oilsorb, Cat litter (the baked clay type only), Aquarium gravel, any fine gravel, Finely broken and sifted treeacotta pots. Builders sand at a push. It should go without saying all of the above need to be clean before use. A growing medium should: provide support, allow very good drainage while still holding some moisture, allow good air circulation around the root system. I hope this helps, good luck.

@@GrowingBonsai Hi Jelle, of course. My red coloured Maple is really dark red the whole year. Another one is like your. Red in spring and during summer the is changing slightly to green. In autumn the Color turns red again. My question was regarding the dark red Maple

Hey Jelle, do these cuttings take any damage from being 'repotted' as you do in the video? Or is now the time to do it? I got a few maples as well that I suspect have survived.

Well.. I obviously damaged one to the point that a root broke off. In general, waiting till spring will have better connected roots, as these will mature over winter. I think there is no real reason for doing it now, except for impatience and curiosity. I am also prone to giving in to that!

hey Jelle , ik ben een zeer fervent liefhebber van japanse esdoorns en heb dus al veel cuttings geproduceert.(katsura , deshojo , orange dream , arakawa , mikawa , sishigashira enz) Echter heb ik nog nooit .....en ik bedoel echt nooit succes gehad met mijn beni chidori. Heb jij enig idee waarom het met deze soort maar niet wil lukken? ik heb al vanalles geprobeert , vochtigheid meer of minder , verschillend substraat , tijd van het jaar , topscheuten en onderste scheuten geprobeert . De stekjes sterven vrij snel af terwijl andere soorten netjes groen ernaast staan in hetzelfde substraat in dezelfde omstandigheden. Enig idee of ken jij iemand die ooit deze soort met succes heeft vermeerdert?

There is a guy under the trade name Canada Bonsai that regularly propagates Beni Chidori from cuttings, and posted recently this is an easy to root variety! You could try and reach out to him?
