IMPORTANT READ HERE: It's ok to slighly overfill the trans on your initial refill. Because the excess fluid will drain out of the standpipe when you do the level check with the transmission at operating temperature. I added more fluid and rechecked the trans the day after this video to make sure I had enough fluid in it. @@zbandick He showed a "fluid change" as opposed to a fluid flush. In the 8L45, if you perform a fluid change, approximately 1/2 of the total capacity is changed. The total system capacity, including what's trapped in the torque converter, is 11.0 quarts. He's now got approx 1/2 new ATF, and 1/2 old ATF. If you perform this for a 2nd time, you'll have 75% new. A 3rd time will be 88% new. A 4th time would be 94% new.

Great informational video, very detailed for beginners that may want to take this on. But be aware! its almost pointless to only do a fluid drain of the pan only. There is about 12q of fluid in total within the closed transmission system including the torque converter and the cooler and lines. As mentioned in another comment below, remove the top cooler line on the passenger side front of the truck at the top of the rad. ( steel tube this is the return tube) Use a 3/8OD hose on the outlet of the cooler and the return tube you disconnected. ( 2 hoses going to bucket) After you cleaned your pan and gasket, fill it with about 7q oil, start her up and run until the fluid comes out clean from the top of the cooler hose ( the return tube hose will come clear very fast, you can plug this with your thumb to prevent new oil loss) you may need to stop the engine and add more fluid in the pan. Continue until oil is clean ( about 5-6 q needs to be flushed out) Connect the tube back up and continue to fill your pan according to the video ending of this video. There is another video the actually shows the flush process. do a quick search for "2018 Chevrolet Colorado Transmission Flush". Good luck!

@@neilg5399 if a full flush is warranted I would recommend having a shop do it with the proper equipment. Pan service and filter is good for regular intervals of 50k miles of normal use. It ends up replacing around 7 quarts of the 12 quart capacity.

This is one of the best videos I have watched in a long time. I'm planning on doing this on my husband's 2016 Z71 Colorado this Sunday. Very generous of you to share the docs also, triple thanks for that. I am replacing the fluid with the original Delco since that's what it came with from the factory. I had a bad experience when a mechanic decided to put some off brand fluid on my Escalade when I asked him to do a fluid change and the truck never ran right after that. Needless to say I will never go back there again!! I would suggest to anyone doing this, that if you are going to change fluids use exactly the same that has been in there rather than mix brands. I'm going to see if you've done a spark plug change too. Our truck has right about 70,000 miles.

Quik tip that’s not apparent in the video. You can overfill the transmission fluid, and then when you do the temp/level check the excess fluid will come out. So it’s ok to overfill it slightly to make sure you put enough in. In my video I didn’t explain that very good.
@grahamfacer804210 ай бұрын
For what it's worth you can do this without removing the exhaust. It's more of a pain but you can unbolt the pan and slide it forward and tip it down. It rests on the exhaust and the transmission. Make sure you have your fluid tray ready to catch the fluid the pump missed (I forgot that part, very messy). Once tilted you can carefully grab the filter and even get to the magnets and wipe the pan. It's not as clean but it worked. It looks like it should slide all the way out but it doesn't due to internal bits of the transmission.
@fondupot10 ай бұрын
Yea. It’s definitely messier if you aren’t able to unbolt the exhaust. But it can be done.
@Bigln1392 ай бұрын
I want to cosign this comment! I was unable to remove the exhaust pipes on my 2017 Canyon due to rust. So after opening the overfill bolt, I then pumped out 6 qts of fluid out the fill hole. I then began the process of dropping the pan. Just be sure to loosen the pan bolts and drop the pan at an angle where the front of the pan is facing down. Take your time as there is no rush. Once done, you should have enough room to comfortably swap the filter and grab the magnets for cleaning. I then used my hand and multiple shop towels to push out the remaining fluid and blindly clean the pan. There was little to no mess to clean up on my garage floor because I had a placed a wide bucket under the transmission pan (now at an angle) for the remaining fluid and also laid out cardboard for any splatter. For those doing this job, please consider these tips and do not get discouraged or be intimidated. You can do it!

Well if they did a flush it makes sense that they use extra fluid, cuz they will pump it Thru the trans until they’re sure it’s all clean new fluid. But 21 quarts still seems excessive. My goal is to do trans pan fluid and filter every 25000 miles. 6-7 quarts every 25000 miles is only about $60-70. And a filter is only $18. Any chance you ever had a shift solenoid issue or tcm issue for this year that caused any p0700 codes? Like p2727 or 2718? Have a 2017 3.6l with 87k on the odometer. Currently stuck in 2nd gear and cant erase the codes or figure it out..

From everything I’ve seen it’s important to do a triple flush otherwise you’re just mixing the old incorrect fluid with the new improved stuff? Because as of now you likely have half and half. Two diff fluids.
@fondupot3 ай бұрын
This video is not meant to be a replacement for the flush procedure. This simply shows a filter and pan fluid. My truck had a flush done to it around 4,000 miles so it already had the new fluid.

I know this is a big ask, but I need to do this work myself because of the labor cost. Will you please make available the literature to replace AC compressor and condenser? I have a 2016 V6. And I'm being charged almost 1k for labor. Trying to survive with bone marrow cancer, I'm forced to do what I can to save, to be able to make ends meet. If you can provide some information to help me know what I'm looking at will be a great help. I'm no mechanic but I'm pretty sure I can do this job with some helpful experience in your literature. If you're able. Thank you
@fondupot2 жыл бұрын
Maurice, sorry to hear about your health issues. This is quite a project. I've never done a AC compressor and condenser myself, but I think it requires several specialized tools and pieces of equipment. And you'd be exposed to the freon coolant that requires a special machine to capture and recharge. By the time you get these tools, you're probably going to be in the ballpark of the quote you got for $1,000. Best of luck.

Do you think it would have taken a lot more time to get the pretty fair amount left in the bottom of the pan just using the pump?

I don’t think it would be too bad. I took the pan all the way off so I could change oh that filter too. But you could always just do a fluid swap with 4-5 qts.

So, I'm asking around about the fluid. I've had 2 different answers. I've been told my colorado uses Dexron 6 T/m fluid, and yours is the LV HP fluid. I'm just trying to source the right stuff. Local auto parts do not carry the HP stuff, and i guess it depends if the pan is held by 15 or 18 bolts and if its 6 speed or 8 speed😑
@fondupot11 ай бұрын
6 speed uses the regular Dexron. 8 speed uses the Mobil LVHP.

@fondupot what'd you do to take out the fluid from the torque converter?

I actually ended up adding another quart and a half the next day. And did the warm up procedure. Then as our 3/4 of a quart drained out. Been running fine since then. If you have the shudder total fluid swap is best. Mine had that done before I took ownership. Brown

You might have forgotten to shift through each drive range on the transmission. P R N D M1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 to make sure the fluid moves through the entire system
@fondupot Жыл бұрын
I shifted thru PRND, and that's all you need to do. Putting the transmission into M or L mode and then clicking each gear (1 thru 8) doesn't actually shift the transmission into those gears, it simply locks out those gears for towing purposes.

@RedBeard109 this is what the service manual says, exactly: -CTS-V/LT1 Camaro, if running a track session, should have the transmission fluid level checked when the TFT is between 55-65°C (131-149°F). 8L45 for Canyon/Colorado is 95-113°F. 6L50 for Canyon/Colorado 86-122°F I don't know what the 10 speeds are, because Canyon/Colorado doesn't have those, and my service manual does not list them.

@@shaunram5327 That wear material probably deposited into the pan & magnets in the first 1500 miles during initial wear-in. It probably won't have as much on the second fluid/filter service. Some well respected transmission shops will do a fluid change around 3000 miles after rebuild. That's when the bulk of the parts have worn-in. No reason to let the trans wallow in its dirty bathwater after that. Trans service at 3000ish miles, then @ 50k and every 50k after that. Those type service intervals will make a trans last 2x long as most people consider a usual auto-trans service life.

The fluid level was so high because you're supposed to check your fluid level while the engine is running when the engine is not running the fluid level will come up past the pan
