It's been freezing here this week, I've been putting an electric heated blanket in the bed to warm it up at night. Lovely haul you had this week, the cake bars look good, they sell them here, bet the kids will love them. Have a lovely weekend.

I am watching your videos from Colorado, USA. It is interesting to see the different types of foods that are in Australia. You have a lot of brands that we do not have in the USA, and the foods you have that are similar to ours have very different names. We live very remotely in the Rocky Mountains and there are no food banks or food pantries around here. A little town is 20 miles away and there is a small grocery store there, and most things are very expensive there. They do get weekly sales and I try to get those when I can. I enjoy watching your videos - very informative and interesting to see the foods from a foreign country.

G'day over there Susan! It's always interesting to see the different foods available in other parts of the world isn't it?! Glad you enjoy the videos, that's so nice to hear. Do you grow some of your own food living so remotely where you are? I can imagine the natural scenery there in the Rocky Mountains would be stunning. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment😊

What a haul for $10! I make 98% of our food from scratch especially pasta, sauces etc. My local food bank is open to everyone not just those in need which is always wonderful if theres a tight week no pension/health care card required. We grow strawberries, oranges and lemons as well as silverbeet. In in geelong Vic We have one gluten free person in our household so that adds up pretty quickly! Also a child with autism so sensory issues need to be met.

Thanks, yes I think it's always excellent value for the $10 I pay. Your food bank sounds similar to the ones in my area in regards to no concession cards being needed. Mine here also are open to anyone in the community which is wonderful and a big help. I have an orange tree too, fresh homegrown orange juice is the best! Love silverbeet as well, it's a great vegetable to grow... I had some growing a couple years back, need to plant some again! Do you manage to get much gluten free food from the food bank? The one I go to on Tuesdays seems to have quite a bit of gluten free bread and baked goods donated.

@@makingendsmeet i mostly just get fruit and veg from food bank i like to save the produce thats on its last legs to cook with i love making apple and sultana bread, banana bread etc. Saves it going in the bin and is usually free so they can move it out the door to waste as little as possible. They always have plenty of bread and other items as well.

I'm from the USA state of Oklahoma I don't use a food bank but I understand the need to grocery are outrageous along with the other bills, I have been stocking food for since 2020, so have a large pantry I suppose I would be called a prepper I would fill my freezer with meat on sale then can it I also when things where cheaper buy bulk food and repackage so I just have to buy a few fresh items as needed, have some land for gardening, but things are still tight my electric bill has really gone up I am glad your family is able to use a food pantry and there is so many things for you God bless

Hey there Danette! Thanks for your kind words. I think you're wise to keep a large pantry and a well stocked reserve, especially in these times. I managed to start a small prepper pantry with some canned items and dry goods around the same time, buying few cans here and there when I could afford to when I did my usual grocery shopping. Now I am grateful I did so and have been using some food from this supply along with what we get from the food bank and what I can grow. Where I live has been cut off with flood waters in previous years too so I always like to have several weeks food put aside for back up if we can't get out to the stores. God bless you too. Thanks so much for watching😊

I volunteer at two food bank give aways here in Californa (USA) then pick up at some others mainly to see seniors have enough since grocery prices raise almost daily. We do not charge a fee for our pick ups it is all free. We have people in line before 6:00 a.m. when we don't begin letting them thru until 9:00 a.m. We pick up at stores that are clearing sell by date items and over that date items and still end up throwing out boxes of mainly bread. No one should go hungry food banks are not just for the poor we are giving out food that would be put in a waste bin. I took a lovely Prime Rib Roast today which was marked $28. American dollars.....who can afford that?
@makingendsmeet
@makingendsmeet Жыл бұрын
Hi there Geraldine! That's so wonderful that you're able to volunteer. I'm sure your help is greatly appreciated, there is so many struggling now, the fact that there is line ups for hours before you open is very telling. And you're right food banks are not just for the poor, the food banks here in my area are open to anyone in the community. So many times I have been told to take more bread because my food bank didn't want to have to chuck it out at the end of the day too! With the crazy prices stores put on food like that roast no wonder they end up going to a food bank! Thanks so much for watching and commenting😊

I am in Sweden. I try to cut costs here and there because things are so much more expensive here too. I don't use a food bank or receive donations though as we still manage fine on our own. My ways of saving money is to keep looking for sales, buy things that are reduced due to being close to expiring and making sure to not waste food. There has been a lot of hot dog meals for us lately and other cheaper food like minced meat etc. I make pancakes, waffles etc. more often and a lot of nice soups. Soup is really a great thing to get rid of leftovers as well as having a tasty meal of all or mostly vegetables. We are also a bit of in a weird spot with allergies, dietary restrictions and me needing to eat low carb which makes us not be able to eat just whatever is the cheapest all the time. We can't have beans, lentil, seafood or fish for that reason and it makes our food often quite meat heavy. Sure, sometimes we can make different dishes for different people but we don't have time with that every night.

Hey there Elin! Thanks for sharing your great tips. I try hard not to waste anything we get too... I agree soups and stews are a really great way to utilize all the random vegetables you sometimes end up with in the fridge! I make a lot of pancakes and vegetable fritters as well. It definitely gets tricky and time consuming trying to prepare separate meals for everyone, it's much easier for the cook just to make the one meal for everyone (or something that can be easily adapted) that's for sure!

Hi fiend. I made a similar comment about receiving food allergy items. Her pantry seems a bit more willing to accommodate and switch items as needed, while mine has already packed boxes with no ability to switch. Luckily, I have a lot of friends that are willing to take my rejects. Lol. And anything left gets donated back to the food pantry...

The Cadbury cake bars are good but the cake can be a bit dry and slightly salty. No I don’t go to a food bank but donate bits to both individuals and food banks. I do rebating on couponing apps.
@makingendsmeet
@makingendsmeet Жыл бұрын
Hi Rebecca! That's so lovely that you're able to donate and help others. That's smart shopping using those couponing apps too, you can save lots of money and get freebies too from what I've seen. Some of the supermarkets here have loyalty programs and apps with discounts and rewards. Occasionally I get free products to try from Coles which is nice but couponing isn't really a big thing in Australia like it is in the UK. I wish more people would use the OLIO app here and that we had the Too Good To Go app we could use as well like you have over there! We tried some cake bars before, I agree they were pretty good!

G'day down there and welcome Karolyn! Sadly we don't have any NQR outlets up here in Queensland but we do have The Reject Shop which I do sometimes buy cheap food items from - they quite often mark a lot of things down which is good too. There is some other 'discount supermarket'/charity organizations a bit further afield away from me that I hope to go to in the future and hopefully when I do I'll make a video to show everyone what I get. Thank so much for watching😊

Does your pantry give you the option to change something if you have an allergy? I see you get almond/soy type milks. For me, I wouldn't be able to have those. Would I be able to switch to cow's milk if available? Just curious. My local pantries do not offer trades or switching due to allergies. I get a lot of things I'm allergic to that I have to give away to friends or donate back the pantry.
@makingendsmeet
@makingendsmeet Жыл бұрын
Yes this food bank I go to on Friday's is pretty accommodating to allergies, if you let them know they're usually good about things like that and depending on what they have available will try help you out. The volunteers are very kind. Some weeks the milk is not packed with the other grocery items and you actually get to pick yourself from a selection on a table which is nice.
