Thanks a lot Anoma! You have touched a very important topic. In our teledramas most words are mispronounced and people tend to learn from it. Thanks karanawa and badge eke are widely used. What you are doing is so very important, timely and it's a social service. Keep it up. Wish you all the best!

Very true Anoma this is something I have been thinking but did not have the platform that you have to say it... some other words would be "Horse" and "Hose" --- "Lawn" and "Lone" and "Loan" -- the other very difficult thing to correct is "F" and "P". Problem with this is the people who teach also may be making mistakes. "The teachers have to be taught first" As you say the Internet is a very good place to learn and our little ones do learn fast. Thank you Anoma for taking time to do this.

Hi Anoma, really admire you. I am a trainer myself and I used tell my students always not to be shy if they can't speak in English as it's not our mother tongue.
@senara71723 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct Anoma. Your simple explanation is excellent. Even those simple words are mispronounced by well educated people and also most of the younger generation pronounce "badge" instead of "batch" very often.

There is an English letter that nearly 99% of Sri Lankans mispronounce. That is the W. Most people substitute V sound to W sound. For example "We" is pronounced as Vee rather than Uee. It may be because we were under the Dutch before the English conquered Sri Lanka. Dutch language like Sinhalese do no have a W sound, and W is pronounced as V. W sound is similar to U sound rather than to V sound. That is why W is called "double U". Another very common mispronunciation is the word Dessert (Sweets after Dinner), which is commonly pronounced as Desert (Dry Land).

very good video... the best part is how you encouraged telling that it’s an international language. I feel embarrassed when you told if you make a mistake of your mother tongue that’s where the fault is. Being a Tamil I honestly struggle with it because we studied in Sinhala medium and even my parents. So we most of the time used English or Sinhala at home. How embarrassing is it.
Mentioned many aspects. Yes Anoma mis-pronouncing is looks like we have inherited, being orientals we have the problem with 'o' sound. Unlike the day we were in school(40yrs ago) now days children are not been taught phonetically. We have another issue thats the mother tongue interference (mti) and also there's another contribution many of us now try to express in sinhala by using English words. Since u mentioned, i too endorse, i heard in a telly saying clutches for crutches. English has become less foreign Anoma for us the reason why we should concentrate how to pronounce properly, unless its a proper noun when u mis pronounce you tend to demean or kill the language. I hv seen some English tutors saying that you need to communicate only....this advise will have a negative effect on the usage. Google pronouncing really good, but need to be minded on British/American pronunciation. I think you have read the pulse of the society and its nothing but the sheer experience. Hats off. Regards Bernard Ps/ i noticed a valid comment posted by Dinushini Rayen which worthy to ponder.
This video is so helpful aunty. These days misuse of thank and thanks can be heard a lot. Thanks soooooo much for posting this video. ❤ ❤ ❤

So glad you did this video Aunty. Thank you so much! I think the harder part is how to correct people individually and let them know that they are pronouncing incorrectly or using the word in the wrong way. People tend to think "eya ithin lokka ne, okkoma dannawa kiyala hitanne.. apiwath hadanne enawa". That mentality in our society doesn't help. We need to be able to learn from each other.

I'd like to add a bit more thing. Think it'll be good to mention it. Island is not ඉස්ලන්ඩ් or ස්ලන්ඩ්, it's අයිලන්ඩ්. There are that kind of confusings in English and it's better to check the pronunciation from Google as Anoma aunty said.

You are absolutely right.. I had some of my university friends who made all these errors you had pointed out. This is a very pertinent one because most of the educated ones don't know that they are making these mistakes. I have been thinking of correcting them but was a bit reluctant that they would not like it due to attitudes of some people. Why is that our TV dramas are shown without going through any of these educational controls. Isn't it time to check for all those. If not the Directors will be doing injustice to the younger generation. Specially boys use all these wrong words. A big thank you to you Anoma for your consideration on correcting these mistakes. I am sure all who want to learn and correct will be able to get it from this video.. 😁 My daughter who has 3 kids love you and says all her kids know you by your name. The twin boys are not even 3 yet. 😀

Hello Anoma A very necessary post However the mispronounced o sound is not a sound available in The Sinhala language Its very important that a child hears this sound in the very first year of life. as the sound range diminishes with age so many sound waves can be distinguished and retained in the first year of life even though as babies we can’t speak but the sound is retained in memory This is why babies should be exposed to many sounds as possible today this possible thanks You Tube which is available to all In the Tamil language the o sound is used in many words like In the English language so Tamil people pronounce words like hall correctly A teacher of English recently told me that isschool can be provinced correctly by first teaching the child the word cool several times and then adding the sss. Coool scool
