Food hunting at KOTA BHARU NIGHT MARKET in Kelantan with

Foreigners try Malaysian food at a night market in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.
This time, we tried stingray (ikan pari bakar) and satar goreng for the first time! We also tried other food in the night market. We had so much fun food hunting at the lively night market. We even got to see a traditional dances which I think is called gamelan silat. Check out our Malaysian night market vlog!

It is probably how we wash fish before cooking. We wash fish with tamarind juice, some will rub salt, to remove the fishy smell and taste.

OMG! Glad to see both Steve and Ken eating actual fish 😂 But honestly stingray has one of the best meat on fish, so Im not that surprised. Do try lot more Kelantanese cuisine esp Ayam percik (ayam percik yati is a good choice) and lunch at Nasi Ulam Cikgu (try the crunchy catfish with some sambal) and breakfast in Kopitiam Kita for selection of famous rice dish from variety of kampung and roti titab. Some old kopitiams around the corner (not the fancy ones) is also a good choice for morning breakfast ya (white house kopitiam is good) Also, never skip all the sweet kuihs as its Kelantanese specialty. btw I wish you guys could also enjoy the beauty of Wau Bulan, our traditional moon-shaped kite while in Kelantan. Please find Galeri Pak Sapie on google/fb and visit them! It is worth a visit as you can find how it was intricately handmade. Kite makers are rare nowadays, it’ll be a pleasant experience to see upclose on how to make them (also make sure u have a translator around at least for bahasa/eng) Enjoy Kelantan!!!

i believed stingray that you guys had was pari ketuka (mangrove wipray) which is one of the smallest species of stingrays. Me myself prefer this ketuka stingray because the flesh is softer and sweeter than the bigger stingray

Hello Ivana and Steve. Did you notice the sauces even though it is chilli but it is mainly sweet. Kelantanese love everything sweet. When we eat rice we eat it with vege but they eat rice meal with watermelon.. If decided to make fish as part of ur diet. Start with stingray, red snapper, white snapper(jenahak), makerel. This are not so fishy taste... You and Ken are converted😅😅😅😅

Hi Steve and Ivana, if you go to Pasar Siti Khadijah there’s a lot of excellent kuihs to be tasted (eg: akok, tepung pelita, seri muka, kerbau guling, tahi itik etc) If you go near Malaysia-Thailand border, the foods there has some influence from Thailand such as Somtam, Kengsom, Kerabu Maggie (we called it Yam), Tom Yam, etc. The price range for foods and goods also lower there. Kelantan is one the state that still retains its traditional culture. Check out Dikir Barat, Silat, Sepak Takraw, Wayang Kulit, kite making, gasing (traditional spinning tops that’s really heavy) and even Muay Thai (Thailand martial arts) if you’re lucky. Kelantan has awesome buildings too such as Masjid Kampung Laut (oldest mosque in South East Asia, it was built entirely out of woods. No nails needed), Masjid Beijing in Rantau Panjang (mosque with chinese architecture. Some people even thought it was a temple) and Sleeping Buddha in Tumpat. Kelantan has great beaches but not as great as Terengganu though. However, we make up for it with many waterfalls (eg: Lata Keding, Jeram Pasu, Jeram Linang, Lata Kashmir etc ) and mountains for hiking. If you’re up for it, I recommend Gunung Stong for your hiking adventure. I also recommend you to try climbing the cave in Gunung Reng. Believe me, the scenery inside the cave is beautiful although not really a challenging hike. Try Laksa Sarang there, it’s really good but with cheaper price. If you asked me what’s so special about Kelantan, I will answered that it was mainly the culture there still the same for hundreds of years🪁,many great scholars came from Kelantan👨🏻‍🏫, heavenly food and desserts🤤, and of course the women there are super beautiful😝.

I eat ikan celup tepung/ tempura whole fish in terengganu. And i love it. The fish is so fresh and taste sweet and not smell fishy at all. There also small stingray celup tepung. The reason of steve like satar is because the spices, coconut, lemongrass in it that make it delicious and irresistible. In western cooking, they only season seafood with salt and pepper plus maybe some 🍋.

You should try ayam percik and/or ikan percik. Both of these can eat on its own or with nasi kerabu. Try laksam (kelantan version of laksa)..each state in Malaysia have different type, different taste of laksa. Laksam flat noodles. Gravy made from broth fish and coconut milk. Try kuih akok. This made from egg and coconut milk. Usually they baked in old coconut shell.

@@JetLagWarriors where were u guys staying??...in town of kota bharu...there is siti khadijah market..there craft village (u guys can asked the tourism office there for nice places) nearby the state mosque(masjid muhammadi)....restaurant nasi ulam cikgu(a must try)..u can go to padang bank nearby the states mosque...some muzium nearby like muzium jahar...muzium bank kerapu...sightseeing at lembah sireh..

Awesome vid guys! What a plot twist that Ken likes fish. Btw, you guys need to try the local signature toasts for breakfast at either Ayang Cafe or Kopitiam Kita. It's halfboiled eggs spread together with kaya on a piece of toast. There is also other breakfast dishes like nasi berlauk or laksam. All must try.
