I feel like so many people are missing her point completely here. She's not saying to only buy crisps, cookies, and pizza and binge on them. She came from a restrictive eating and exercising past where everything had to be the perfect calories and macros and hunger was 'meant to be ignored'. With 'all in' she still eats a variety of wholefoods and lovely balanced meals and snacks, but also allows herself the foods she wants and likes without judgement, and listens to genuine hunger cues. I've come from a restrictive eating disorder and gone through her journey - after a while of eating more calories and gaining the weight your body needs you naturally find a balance where you still have mostly healthy, balanced meals but can have crisps or a cookie or two without thinking it's an all or nothing diet. My body and mind feels so much more nourised and healthy and my life is so much more full of joy without restricting my weight or food and I'm sure she feels the same.

@naina98074 жыл бұрын
For anyone coming from long term restriction, the only way to recover is to face our fears. With any addiction, to recover you have to do the opposite of what the addiction wants you to. For example, someone addicted to alcohol can't have "just a bit" of alcohol, just like someone with an eating disorder can't restrict "just a bit." Therefore, we go "all in." For someone who has restricted for so long, food is medicine and you need more of it than someone who hasn't been restricting long term. This advice probably doesn't apply to people coming from a "normal" relationship with food. Her target viewers have changed. I just saw her older videos, and for someone with an eating disorder, that's the type of channel I would have avoided. A lot. This video helps me feel free, not guilty or label myself with my choice of "junk" food. Yes, for anyone with a healthy background, eat clean, treat foods are fine here and there. Once her weight and relationship with food stabilises, the will to restrict will die down and she will have food freedom and will most likely only want whole, nutritious food (compared to what people eat at the start of going all in). I don't know how long this will take so please don't judge her or her body for taking how long she needs to.
@hp518774 жыл бұрын
Unpopular opinion: if you have a healthy relationship with food you really won’t be putting on substantial amounts of weight right now. As long as you listen to hunger and fullness and eat reasonably healthy, you should be fine. This is a good time for people to face they definitely use food as a drug- for stress relief, boredom, sadness, etc. This isn’t healthy. I have not gained a single pound in quarantine.
@kellyshurden64594 жыл бұрын
Okay well the thing is not everybody has a healthy relationship with food. In fact, a majority of the people I know (specifically girls) struggle with some kind of eating disorder. Being in quarantine has not helped that for them including myself. I agree that people tend to use food as a drug for whatever it may be and I agree it's not healthy, but it's not so easy to fix. I'm happy for you that you haven't gained a single pound. But think of other people with actual eating disorders that are going through this too. Not everything is about yourself. I respect your opinion though.

@@kellyshurden6459 I struggle with food too and one of the things that has helped is filling my pantry with nutritious foods that make me feel good! I wish Stephanie had emphasized that. The food she is eating in this video is actually meant to be addictive and can cause binge eating in a lot of people who struggle with it. When I overeat on healthy foods, I feel a lot less guilty and am less apt to fall into any sort of cycle of overeating - i can much more easily process it and move on. I also wish she had shared more tips about reflection and meditation, especially journaling about hunger and hunger signals. @@The_Herniator what if she has a restrictive eating disorder or orthorexic habits? You're suggesting to someone, who you don't know, to eat 'healthy foods' but what exactly does that mean? Yes of course some foods are more nutritionally dense, however if someone feels they are only allowed to eat 'healthy foods' then this is restriction. Mental health is equally as important as physical health (and restriction is not healthy) - I suggest you either mind your own business or encourage people to listen to their body, cater to their own needs and find balance and happiness in this stressful time.

While I do agree with most Steph, many people with eating disorders are ALWAYS hungry. That's how some people get to obesity. This quarantine shouldn't be an excuse to get to an unhealthy weight either. Edit: I'm down 21kg/46lbs from being clinically obese and now at a healthy weight. Food's always a struggle, but the leading cause of death in covid patients is the disease being mixed with being overweight (in age group 18-64). Please do stay at a healthy weight or no more than 5kg/10lbs outside of one!

@@tobischmidt1715 No, I disagree at some point. It can also result from hormonal issues. So eating disorders can also be found in people having a leptin/ghrelin-problem. And at this point they need more "self control" than other people. Also the kind of food interacts with the hunger signal. That is why e.g. simple carbs cause more hunger afterwards because of the drop of the bloodsugar level. Protein in contrast keeps satiety up and is better for weight management.

I binged and purged as a teen and was able to divert some of that through at-home HIIT. It helped me resist the urge to throw up but still left room for my mindset of matching my workout output with my calorie intake. Your Intermediate Lifting program was the first lifting program I’ve ever bought and prompted me to get a gym membership. It built structure back into my days during my first year out of college unemployed and job-seeking. It reminded me of my agency to take charge of things and change what was within my control, when I was demoralized at the things I could not presently change-a lack of job offer post-grad. And, most unprecedented, it encouraged me to eat more, rather than restrict and self-shame. I’ve already purged once since quarantine. But I’m keeping those thoughts at bay lifting at home and going for a walk at least once a day. I know you anticipate a lot of flack for addressing such subjects during a quarantine, but I want you to know how powerful your reminders and example are. To me. Thank you. For showing the good, the bad, and the ugly of your journey. For giving solid not saccharine advice on how to persist. And for being a minority voice of non-weight loss oriented fitness.

I'm truly sorry that you're still stuck in this ED cycle, but it sounds like you're doing all the right things to slowly pull yourself out of it. It is so incredibly hard to overcome an ED. I've been restricting since I was 15, and then when I was 25, I began an extreme cycle of restricting and binging, that took me 7 years to cure. It was completely out of control. I would go back and forth between consuming 5,000-10,000 calories a day, to eating only 500-800 calories a day. It made me feel powerless, and I wondered if I would ever feel normal when it came to food and my relationship with my body/weight. There were a few key decisions I made to help me break the cycle. 1) Talking to a wonderful therapist. 2) Writing in a journal every day. 3) Taking small steps towards my ultimate goal, as opposed to trying to fix everything at once. 4) Forcing myself to eat when I was hungry, no matter what, and stopping as soon as I felt satisfied. 5) Finally giving myself permission to stop dieting and losing weight. I just focused on maintaining my size and truly listening to my body for the first time. I wish you all the best!!

I believe your message could be potrayed in a different way by some people and it justifies them binge eating unhealthy food. Yes self love and patience is important. Thats why you should take care of your body and eat healthy wholefoods. Not for the sake of people in social media, not for the sake of fitness and health standards, but for the sake of your own body! We got one life and one body. We should treat with love and respect that it deserves. Also Im not trying to hate, im simply stating on what I think is right. These times are stressful and one of the dangers i sense is when we are loosening up on our diet and started to binge eating junk food. What could happen is some will get used to it, and worse, you could develop a potential eating disorder or a bad eating habit because of it which could be carried over once this quarantine is over. Please to everyone, think for yourself. Is it better to have short term pleasures? Or long term results? The choice is in your hands

Someone should eat if she/he is HUNGRY, not out of boredom. I like to eat, too, so if I would eat everytime I would like to, I would eat all the time and I would become obese (!) and ill. Eating "all in" made me obese in the past (my bmi was over 30 and my blood pressure was high in the first time in my life!). Now I eat when I am hungry and my weight is normal. My bloodpressure is low to normal again. No, I disagree. Eating when someone is hungry: yes Eating if somebody just "wants" - even without a hunger signal: no - this is the entrance for an eating disorder. Food is fuel, not an instrument to combat boredom.

Stephanie, I really don't know about your advice not to exercise if it's stressful. Everyone should be able to find some form of exercise that isn't mentally stressful. Be it yoga, a walk, bike ride, or just running around in circles flailing your arms like a madman! I have never heard of anyone that doesn't experience an improvement in mood and stress levels after getting their heart rate up. It is especially important in times like these.
@xiaoshanzzz4 жыл бұрын
I never comment in public ever. And I agree with where you are coming from -- for a lot of people, exercise is a form of stress relief. Believe me this is true for me too. I love a good endorphin rush from elevated heart rate. But like her original advice, all exercise advice needs proper context. For example, you don't have to wake up super early to exercise if you have a 14 hour workday ahead of you. It's shouldn't be another source of your stress; or another chore on your todo. When trading off exercising with other activities that might relieve your stress (like singing, painting, etc. whatever), it doesn't always have to be exercise. I used to stress myself out for missing a few days of workouts because I needed that 40 minutes of sleep on those days. I know that was the right choice for my body, even though the anxiety of "I'm not keeping up with my health" was running high in my head. Giving health advice is hard. Because health/balance is such a nuanced topic. I appreciate you raising the point of "move your body in the way that feels good". It's super important. It's just not necessarily the right thing to at certain particular moments.

Right before the gym closure, I finally started seeing consistent results with weight loss, mentality, and strength gains in the gym. I felt like I was in such a good place, but not being able to go to work everyday, or the gym, and being stuck at home all day, I've experienced a really bad relapse in bulimia that I finally felt I had under control. Although I have had an eating disorder for over 6 years now, the last couple of years I have really experienced more control and stability in recognising triggers and accepting the times I have overeaten and just dealt with any binges when they occurred, and I was finally able to tell myself it was just one day and to get back on track tomorrow. But this is a really difficult time that I feel I've lost all control, so this video definitely helped reassure me because I am certainly feeling guilty of every single thing!

@emmaashburn33734 жыл бұрын
I had bulimia for years and I totally understand the struggle. It's VERY hard to break the habit/obsession/addiction. It's entirely psychological, so approach your mental issues before thinking about how your body looks physically. Working on mindfulness helps, such as daily meditation to help with stress and self discipline, along with repeating mantras to yourself. I personally have to look in the mirror and tell myself "food does not control me" over and over and I'm telling you it has helped so much with my eating disorders. I have a way better relationship with food, I eat when I'm hungry but I don't binge and make myself sick anymore and I'm still in good shape. Instead of being mad at myself if I ate like crap that day, I look at myself in the mirror (I mean this literally) and say that maybe I didn't have a great day and that's okay- I can do better tomorrow and just work on improving my self control one step at a time. Shifting my mindset has made all the difference in the world and I really hope you can take something away from this!

But it's not as easy as you make it sound. Firstly, lots of things are sold out in grocery stores. Sometimes, the healthy options aren't there, or if they are, they are much more expensive. That poses a big problem since a lot of us are struggling with finances. Furthermore, the more at risk your household or you are, the less you can go out to buy more food. That means we're stuck with whatever we have which is usually cheap, shelf-stable, and unhealthy

Now that we're all stuck at home, this is a great time to work on your health and fitness and establish good habits for the long-term future. Using the quarantine as an excuse to stop caring is only going to lead to worse shit down the road.

댕동딩동 Stocking up on junk food isn’t going to do anything to help. I actually used to be overweight and the path to getting fit is in making good decisions at the grocery store and holding yourself accountable. You can accept that you have an eating disorder and work to fight it or you can use it as an excuse. Your choice.
@elli_e10724 жыл бұрын
I had an ED and the "I don't care" mood was what I needed. I was eating healthy for years and believe in me, it's not that healthy as you think. Because if you're that kind of person, with time you will stuck yourself in this way of thinking that everything else is bad. Bread? Evil. Pasta? No you can't, it's not healthy. Pizza with friends? Eggs, biscuits, milk, potatoes: evil as well. Evil, evil, evil. I totally removed these things from my life until I found myself alone and starving to death. So for some people, this "I don't care" can really be the solution. Because you need to not care THAT much about food. Even the healthy one
@michellepark09544 жыл бұрын
@@Noah-Lach what kind of eating disorder did you have ? From what I see and heard stephanie admitted herself that she had suffered from long term restrictive diet and orthorexia. For orthorexic mindset, that "i dont care" mindset is necessary in order to stay mentally and physically healthy. She also admitted that she eats whole food on regular basis instead of junk food all the time. Everyone needs to take different routes to achieve "Healthiness", and for people who suffered from extreme hunger/ long term restriction/ anorexia/ bulimia need to fight that ed voice hence need to eat more and exercise less. For others who have bed, or did not have history of things above need to do the opposite to be healthy.

I'm 16 years old. I've struggled with multiple eating disorders and lately have been on the uphill battle to get better and I've made tremendous progress. the way my body took to restriction "worked" for a while but them my body held onto a lot of the fat and I was left with zero muscle and an overall really weak body. I've been doing much better and am around 140 lbs for someone whose 5'8 which isn't bad at all but I'm still high in body fat. I'm working on finding what works as far as exercising which is a recent addition to my health journey and found out that I'm still realllyyy undereating and then with the occasional binge i think its left my body really confused. but, i know I'm doing the right ting, I'm slowly reverse dieting with wholesome foods and trying not to get too wrapped up with the idea of gaining more weight. I'm not sure when ill have everything figured out and back to a healthy state but I'm going to keep working till i do, and do so the right way

a lot of these comments don’t understand that this video is targeted towards people with restrictive “fitness” habits. as a society, we don’t acknowledge the adverse effects of diet culture just as much as we do to acknowledge the issues with obesity and gaining any sort of weight. for every video like this, which preaches less food guilt and emotional kindness, there’s a million videos out there constantly pushing DONT LOSE YOUR PROGRESS or DONT BE LAZY AND DONT EAT in the midst of a pandemic. there’s a clear problem with our mindset here, considering so many people have reacted with straight up hate. nothing wrong with criticism, but immediately attacking steph for this video is just childish. i loved the vid, by the way, but i guess it’d be good to clarify that this wouldn’t necessarily work for morbidly obese people so that everyone doesn’t get on your ass for it ahhaha

Now is a great time to change your relationship with food in a positive way. You know those warning signs on cigarette packs? "If you smoke, your gums will end up like this" and the person's gums are all black and cancerous? Fun fact: That actually causes smokers to smoke MORE, not less. Why? Because it causes stress; it reminds them of their mortality. And what do smokers do when they're stressed? They smoke. The same dynamic is at play when binge eaters beat themselves up for binge eating. If you call yourself stupid and lazy for eating too much, you're going to stress yourself out. And what do binge eaters do when they're stressed? They eat. Now, I'm not saying you should always let yourself off the hook. I'm just saying there's a difference between beating yourself up and holding yourself accountable. Plenty of people beat themselves up -- it's actually the default, and they end up getting nowhere. It's better to take a rational look at your behavior ("I ate a lot of food; people overeat occasionally because it's a primal response to great food. It's okay. Now what should I do to avoid it next time?") than it is to call yourself a fatass for eating too many Oreos one night. I don't know. Just a long-winded way of saying you should stay level-headed and unemotional toward food. It's just food.

@@phillips8366 oh god, yes! I come from a similar background and if my brain actually believes I am allowed to eat, have whatever I want, even all the candy etc., it finally relaxes and doesn't overcloud the connection to my body, so I can actually listen to wether I WANT that candy. Most of the time, I don't, and if I do, it's literally just a small bite for the taste. I swear, then I eat cleaner and less than on any plan/diet, because as soon as I know there are ANY rules, my primal brain wants to break them. It's really hard to keep allowing yourself just so in the end, you can actually continue eating healthier, because both dieting and non-restriction always have the opposite effect of what we intend them to. Just reading some comments here made me really really nervous, because I was thinking 'other people think this is so unhealthy and bad, so maybe I should start a diet again too and set up some rules?' and in the background, the primal brain went into full panic mode and I just noticed my racing heart for no reason.
