Fun fact. the water coming out of my tap is yellow, for about 10 seconds. sometimes brown, if I go a week without using the faucet. I inquired to my city health department and they said it's probably just rust from old pipes, and since my apartment is very old and owned by a state entity, it doesn't have to be fixed. Just let the faucet run for 60 seconds before drinking from it, and it will be fine. THAT'S why I drink bottled water at the moment.

So my mom (a nurse) once told me about the B.R.A.T. diet for stomach upset, aka Broth, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. Chicken soup has broth with rice and/or toast in it. Lots of nutrient per calorie and easy to digest compared to most modern food, and usually not too sweet. But it doesn't have to be chicken. Any sort of hot mush will do, be it a wet chili, a beef stew, veggie ramen, spicy coconut chowder, egg flower (my favorite), so long as it's got a bunch of protein and some carbs that aren't too sweet and you can slurp it down even if it's hard to swallow or you're literally too tired to chew much. Jellow, pudding, applesauce, etc are same idea but cold instead of hot and sweet instead of savory. Other than being sugary, bananas are nutrient rich and easy to eat, and less acidic than a lot of other fruit. Also if you've got a nose cold, switch from butter to oil and vinegar or guac or peanut butter for your toast because dairy can increase mucous production, which is why you don't hear about people eating extra cheese or yogurt when they're sick even though they're high calorie foods that don't take much chewing. TLDR: soup easy to swallow with sore throat
@TheWowza483 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure the cooking channel show- Food fact or fiction- did the chicken soup one. From what I remember, I think it boiled down to "It helps you feel better because it helps your body/immune system recover the nutrients/minerals/other stuff it loses while sick. Also, the "p" in pH just stands for -log, not power. This means that pH stands for "-log of the Concentration of H+". We really only use the pH scale since it is logrimithic and gives nicer numbers than concentrations of H+ (since a pH of 7 equates to 1.0×10^-7 M of Hydrogen ion and a pH of 14 is 1.0×10^-14 M of Hydrogen ion).

Nice, good job. We assume all water is a dynamic solution neutral H2O and its ions (hydronium and hydroxide), however new water research from the past decade shows the truth is more complex... much more complex. Every solution of pure water, no matter the pH, takes on many many forms: neutral, ionic, and as we now know LIQUID CRYSTALLINE which has a practically infine number of different arrangments. This discovery challenges our most fundamental ideas of the branch of science we call chemistry. There is no explanation or even a theory for how or why water forms these liquid crystals - but they do. This is not common knowledge since it has no place in our current understanding.

I remember reading about how carbonated water actually makes you more hungry than regual water. also, of course. If you have reflux issues its not going to make that any better either. though not because of tha acid and rather because of the gas. Carbonated water also tend to be not that acidic anyway. carbonylic acid is a rather weak acid, and highly unstable. hence why its making water sparkling. its immediatly falls apart and leaves the liquid as carbon dioxide, leaving H2O behind.

basic chemistry would answer this for everyone instantly, your acidid stomach neutralizes the alkaline water instantly, like literally as soon as it enters your stomach its not basic anymore and your stomach just makes more acid if you neutralize some of it.

He addresses this, saying that alkaline water offers some relief to heartburn caused by excessive stomach acid.
@unidentifiedguy82533 жыл бұрын
@@caseyoung1527 As does Tums, but the problem with these options is that your stomach just as easily releases more acid. The reality is that chronic heartburn is typically caused by chronic overeating. When your stomach is always having to produce excessive acid to deal with the amount and frequency it has to digest food, it starts becoming the norm for your body. Losing weight totally stopped by heartburn and quiting smoking stopped my GERD, so I always try to keep people avoiding prescription drugs and surgery for something they can correct themselves.

I would love to hear Matpat explain why we, as humans, can't digest corn
@hayleygabbard15133 жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure it’s because plants have sugars linked in a specific way and we as humans can’t digest them. Idk why tho
@emmakinzian5393 жыл бұрын
We can, just not the skin of the kernel. They look like full kernels in your stool because they get filled again with more stool.
@seigeengine3 жыл бұрын
The exterior of corn kernels is cellulose. We can not digest cellulose. Interestingly, cellulose is basically identical to starches, which we obviously can digest, but whereas starches have the glucose units all bonded on the same side, in starch they flip back and forth. This small difference means the enzymes we use to break down starches are unable to break down cellulose. Now, some animals do break down and digest cellulose. The way they do this isn't that they produce enzymes to do it, but rather that they let microbes in their guts do so. There are a few strategies here. Some animals, like cows, have very long multi-stage digestion processes that give ample time for bacteria to break down cellulose. Others instead extend the time they spend digesting by consuming their feces to have a second go at it. Anyways, cellulose is what "dietary fiber" is. Fiber is beneficial because it can't be digested. It adds bulk, retains moisture, and slows digestion and absorption of certain things, as well as supports healthier gut flora.
@dynamicworlds13 жыл бұрын
@seigeengine a little elaboration, if I may: cellulose is just one source of one category of dietary fiber. Specifically, it's insoluble fiber which (while both are good for you) does a somewhat different set of things to soluble fiber. If you're trying to get a specific benefit from the fiber you're adding to your diet, looking up the differences may be useful. If you're just trying to generally improve what you're putting into your body, making sure you're getting a balance of both will do you better than loading up on a supplement that only has one. The more interesting thing about corn, specifically, is how we need to process it to get the full nutritional value out of it, which skipping has caused nutrient deficiencies in the past.
@seigeengine3 жыл бұрын
@@dynamicworlds1 Unnecessary elaboration, imo. While it's true dietary fiber is broader than cellulose, the options are basically also cellulose, or other indigestible polysaccharides, many with other monosaccharide bases. There's also things like resistant starches, but... honestly, there's a limit. And, really, if you're eating a good diet, you're going to be getting a bunch of both. You shouldn't generally need supplements.

The health community's obsession with acidity would be kind of hilarious if people weren't taking it seriously. Take a look at the charts they produce where they claim to assign pH values to various common foods: you get things like citrus fruits listed as alkaline (because they're healthy, and therefore by definition must be alkaline, right?), and some foods with values so extreme you'd dissolve your hand touching them if there were any truth to the charts (which there isn't).
@dutchik51073 жыл бұрын
Eh. You typically don't dissolve. Just get chemical burns
@cpink1022923 жыл бұрын
You know I googled this because I was like "No way! No one can be that stupid". And, sure enough, there were infographics that listed lemons and limes as having a pH of 9.0, even though both have been well tested and have well recorded pHs of 2.0-ish. Those infographics even put icecream as more acidic then than lemons. I'm sitting here wondering how they even came up with that information. Like if your icecream had a pH that low, you would know. It would taste just terrible. Like, think about it. Milk normally has a pH of close to 7, while sour milk has a pH of close to 4.5. Think about what ice cream would taste like if its pH was lower than 2.0. It wouldn't even be worth selling. I just don't know about humanity anymore.

@@swampdonkey1567 I think so, but the exact terminology doesn't matter too much
@ShiroKarui3 жыл бұрын
If you want to talk about superacids, then the pH scale will be quite janky. The first concept of an acid is constructed around the H+ particle. An acid would be something that donated a proton (H+) and a base would donate hydroxide (OH-) The theory was later on changed by brønsted to proton donors and acceptors, which allowed us to explain basic solutions that the old theory couldn't. In extend the formula for "pH" calculations was also adjusted and changed into the term H o (as in zero). A super acid has an H o of -12, which isn't the same as a pH of -12. It just indicates how well it can neutralize hydroxide solutions.
@simedinson9843 жыл бұрын
@@swampdonkey1567 nope super acids (usually a combination of brönstedt and lewis acids) are a different thing. And acid base things gets wacky when you go far beyond 0 or 14. As you are talking about a logoritmical scale of concentration of H+ so ph 20 would be /10000000000000 as few H+ than at ph 7 which sort of limits your choices.

@IONATVS3 жыл бұрын
you are correct that the technical definition of the function pX = -log_10_( [X] ), where [X] is the molar concentration of X in the solution, with pH originally intended as a logarithmic measure of H+ ion concentration, but now just as commonly described as measuring H3O+ (Hydronium) ions instead because of better understanding of how ionization of water works mechanically, so technically should be written as pH3O. But MatPat is correct that the letter “p” (ie the NAME of the function pX) is usually assumed to stand for “potential (latin ‘potentia’) of X” or “power (latin ‘potestas’) of X” or one of many related words in german and french, despite to my knowledge no record of Søren Sørensen’s original reasoning surviving to this day, just that in his original work he labelled the function as P[H].

As an environmental engineer, I agree 100%! The level of regulations for tap water from the EPA are extremely high and are typically higher than that of bottled water. The only reasons tap water is viewed as unsafe is due to taste, usually caused by low levels of residual chlorine used to keeps it safe from bacteria and viruses in the piping system. This off taste can easily be handled by a pitcher with an activated carbon filter. Also, people have some fear due to fringe cases like Flint Michigan which was caused by several mishaps and cover ups by the water treatment plant that should have never happened by a properly trained environmental engineer. Water if continually tested at the plant, and in the rare event something exceeds a standard (usually still safe, standards are strict), they are required by law to notify the public as soon as possible. Bottle water is regulated by the FDA, and they require very little reporting on how the bottled water is sourced, filtered, and treated.

When stomach acid is neutralized, the cells would just keep secreting hydrochloric acid, but it does affect the supply since the body is a closed system to a limited degree. More on the chlorine side of things considering hydrogen is easy to get.

Just did a science fair project about it pH will increase the melting time of an ice cube placed in liquids with differing pH this was helpful! I was so confused why the higher pH made the ice melt slower, turns out the higher ions In the Ph would force the ice cubes out of the water giving it a lower surface area.

I'm a medical provider and this stuff drives me crazy. The fact of the matter is that the brain thinking something will work can actually make it work.. kinda. The placebo effect is an amazing thing, but CA can't be absorbed without Vit D. This isn't anything new. Without Vit D, it just gets stick in your kidneys on the way of being expelled like all the other minerals your body can't use and builds up. I've seen it a lot while deployed and people like to drink Gatorade over water. It won't change your bodies PH level, that's not how it works and GERD is a much more complex issue than taking a sip of water.

2:19 I always found this idea odd (and by odd I mean stupid) especially when some bottled waters are just tap waters that was bottled at a local manufacturing plant, yes the water is likely going to be cleaner than some of the stuff coming out of your taps (been a UK person I’m shocked at the state some of your tap water comes out) but you can just get yourself a good Quality water filter. (Edit: I’m talking about a normal filter the kind that is mostly just activated charcoal and depending on the brand some other things to help clean out bad stuff from the water, where I live in the UK has an obnoxiously high level of calcium in the so without a filter we have to descale the kettle every 2 to 3 weeks or it because unuseable)

I live in a place where I've been told the water has a lot of natural minerals in it, so pretty much everyone has filtered water. I'd be interested in learning the science between why having "hard" or "soft" water matters

I warmly recommend it. But just in general: C'mon, you call yourself theorists, but i wonder how many science-yt-channel you even know!

Hi @Anya Klum, the hardness of water depends on the concentration of minerals in the water, the higher concentration of minerals, the harder the water. Examples of such minerals are Mg2+ and Ca2+ ions. This can affect the solubility of certain compounds in water such as Ca(OH)2, where Ca(OH)2 solution is used in the industry to treat waste gases like SO2(g). The presence of Ca2+ in the hard water reduces the solubility of Ca(OH)2 due to Le Chatelier's principle, causing concentration of Ca(OH)2 to be lower at equilibrium. When used to treat SO2, the lower concentration reduces the amount of SO2 reacted, reducing the effectiveness. References: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_water en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limewater This is just one of the ways hardness of water matters. Feel free to ask questions and share your thoughts, I would love to hear them! Hope this helps!

"Hard" water has a lot of extra minerals dissolved in it, so can make things like soaps and detergents less effective. Here in Germany our dishwashers actually have built in water softeners to combat this and make our dish detergent more effective.

the acid-base chemistry, while oversimplified, and idealized, is mostly correct. However radical chemistry is very different. Radicals aren't just electrons from negative ions, but are highly reactive, unpaired electrons. You can have unpaired electrons in both positive, negative ions and neutral molecules/atoms (radical Oxygen is neutral), and "neutralizing" radicals isn't a simple thing as "add a base". Radicals are "neutralized" by pairing the unpaired electron with another unpaired electron (generally forming a covalent bond, or prorogating the radical to another molecule)

Ahh, yes, the wild youtube comments genius "Fakesilous Smarticulous." commonly found commenting under videos of the scientific nature. It typically spends its time writing youtube comments on said scientific videos, these comments tend to be either extremely brief or moderately long, no in-between. Said comments are typically constructed from knowledge gathered from online articles, while these articles may seem convincing, they are usually from the second page of Google and are therefore voided of any scientific validity as they are likely cherry-picked to prove the creature's point. These creatures reproduce asexually, as they are nearly invisible to women. Such a magnificent and mysterious creature.

Of course, this entire video and Mr. Smarty McSmartpants' commentary above completely ignore the role of the lungs and kidneys in keeping the blood's pH balanced. This is why all these fad waters and "cleanses" are pointless. If your body isn't clearing toxins or balancing pH you're either on your way to the hospital or dead.
