Just turned 30 years of age and I am type 2 diabetic and 3 months ago my LDL was tested at 111. My doctor prescribed me statins, stating that cholesterol is too high BUT I did NOT take them. I wanted to give myself an opportunity to see if my results would lower with eating cholesterol lowering food. I ate 1-2 cups of the dark chocolate mush Oatmeal EVERY morning for breakfast. A lot of days but not every day, I ate some of the suggestions in the this video (almonds, avocado, tomatoes, hummus, drinking more water etc). I also cut back on a lot of the meat I was eating. Went back for testing 3 months later (yesterday) and my LDL has went down significantly, I'm quite surprise. LDL at 90, and all other results in Lipid Panel within normal range. My diabetes is doing okay with A1C of 6.2. I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing for now and follow up with my doctor in 3-6 months as necessary.

@@geribruno1207 because maybe it ISN'T too high. Our Bodies MAKE 85% of cholesterol. It's in every cell. You need it for a healthy heart, liver, brain. You know, heart attacks/disease has actually gone UP since a few decades of putting people on something they didn't even know was a "Thing", until someone figured out a way of measuring it in the first place. and blood tests will tell you NOTHING about what is sticking to the walls of your arteries in the first place, just what is flowing THROUGH it.

I wonder if doctors prefer a pill that they can be fairly certain the patient will take regularly, to a “diet change”, when they know how unreliable we can be about any diet in the longer term. My doctor wants me to take a statin to protect the tiny blood vessels in the brain, and hopefully prevent or stave off Alzheimer’s . Can you please comment on that?

She’s an MD health coach and she has a 12 week program to better health centered around a whole food plant based low to no fat diet. In 12 weeks with virtually no exercise because I had had a medical procedure which prevented me from doing much exercise at all, my cholesterol dropped from 285 to 195. My LDL, HDL and triglycerides were all good.

I trashed your video on "Inflammatory Foods: What to avoid" ( a little bit) because it addressed what not to eat but didn't address what to switch to eating and had no mention of the psychological impact of a drastic change in diet, which would eventually, in short-order order find me in a donut shop in the morning and a bar at night chugging beers. But this video is educating me. It is virtually my shopping list for today as well. Fortunately, I like all of the foods on your list. What do I do with my kitchen's bread, bacon, butter, rice, processed cereals, and sugar? I'll work it out. I appreciate doctors in general, especially both of you, who have a sense of humor. As a former class clown, I appreciate you both adding being wise to being funny.

I love that you’re talking about nutrition and food. I love that you’re discussing this because actually the doctors don’t get into it at all. They just throw a drug on you. And honestly we need much more education on the nutritional aspects of what we eat and what we don’t eat. I eat almond butter pure organic nothing added and it is really tasty and good. So I hope that’s the same as almonds. They do say now that you should eat fat good fat so I’m confused because they also say lower the carbs. But there’s another group that says the opposite how do I know what the answer is? Thank you I think it is to eat a little bit everything healthfully? With my RA I do get flareups with certain foods so I have to be careful too. It’s very complicated.

Hi Joolz. We say limit the fat. Likely limit the animals. Carbs are ok but not refined carbs. No white bread pasta or rice. Whole grain. And if you are diabetic you have to be careful about some carbs. We don’t want the big sugar spikes that some people get. Almond butter is awesome. Thanks for watching and subscribing

I found out saturated fat was my culprit. The first find was coconut every thing in my diet increased my number very high. The second time is when I started using grass fed butter , kefir, and cheeses. So very little saturated fat for me. I thought it was cholesterol until the coconut products stole the show and made me come to believe that saturated fat causes my liver to produce more cholesterol than normal.

You guys are wonderful! In over 8 years of being bounced from one specialist to another, no one - not even my primary care N.P. who claims to be holistic in her approach! - no one has ever referred me to a nutritionist or dietician. I had a scary ride over six months ago with a subarachnoid hemorrhage, and the neurologist now says I'm ok to stop some of the extras that were prescribed, like an ARB that was doubled and a calcium channel blocker that was added new to my regular beta blocker, all of which I must keep - according to my cardiologist. Stop this not-so-merry go round, I've completed my DNR paperwork and I get to decide! So thanks for your candor and humor! And I'm going to demand a referral for new blood work and food advice from someone who doesn't have the quickest prescription pad in town!

I had high cholesterol from following a low carb/high protein diet. It was 279. Dr. gave me some time to work on it. Over the cours of oone year, I increased my carbs, lowered my fat intake and dropped it down to 250. Dr. didn't recommend statins but advised me to keep working on it. I told him I wanted to try the Mediterranean diet. After about 6 weeks, I had my cholesterol checked again. It dropped to 223! Still a tad high but by including many of the foods you listed and reducing my animal protein to once a day, it dropped 27 points! I thought that was pretty impressive! My Dr. was pretty excited as well. One thing I've noticed is that the diet is really high in fiber. I'm hitting the recommended daily amount of fiber for the first time ever.

Guys, I’m SO excited….. I had high cholesterol inherited from my late father died of a heart attack age 60 (24 years ago…actually in King City near Toronto, Canada 🍁 where he’d lived for 3years) but had his first heart-attack aged 43, so strong family history there. I’m 52 years old. My cholesterol was 7.8 (I’m not sure what the equivalent in the USA is) and five months ago I started a whole food plant based eating strategy, massively reduced my alcohol intake and started to walk most evenings for about 1 1/2 to 2 miles . Last Friday night my doctor actually texted me because he was so pleased with my blood results taken the other day - it’s dropped from 7.8 down to 4.6 all thanks to eating completely different way. I cut out meat, dairy, oil and eggs although I have to say, I do occasionally have whatever I like if we are eating outside once every couple of months. I am so happy with my results and my doctor is over the moon! It just shows the power of nutrition and power of re education.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😊ps I also lost 20lbs in weight!

Excellent s simplified approach and I can vouch for what you gentleman have suggested, I have been using these approaches from a long time had 4 heart attacks but didn’t quit on my workouts and also had a triple bypass in 2018, after these events I have completely reversed my lifestyle, I am diabetic as well from the last 30 years with no complications now I look back and say what is triple bypass, I can hike 13 miles workout at they gym every single day as well as HIIT workouts , my cardiologist told me on my annual checkup that we are not used to seeing patients like you we get those who have reached the bottom and we fix their plumbing only to see them back again after few years, I am on 50 mg Losartan and no diabetic meds whatsoever and yes you can manage your metabolic issues my making food your medicine as well as physical movement. Follow the functional medicine approach it works. Thank you again for putting out wonderful videos.

useful information! Thanks! I am Italian and grew up on the "Mediterranean diet" so I do eat a lot of the foods mentioned. Unfortunately, due to the prohibitive cost of so many foods, I have been using a lot of cheap carbs over the past several months. I had a lipid profile done yesterday and was dismayed to see my triglycerides were more than 50 points above the range. My HDL was good, and my LDL was about 20 points above the range. Can you do a video on lowering triglycerides naturally and some cost-effective food alternatives for folks on limited income? Note: I was surprised that oatmeal didn't make your list? Also, olives! I love olives and olive oil is a staple in my home. It's the Italian butter.

Fascinating as usual. Thanks, BUT SAD - chicken wings!! I'm a 50+ - year vegetarian. But familial high cholesterol turned up and I had an angina attack about 15 years ago! (no trouble since 2 stents) Genetic, so my sons both inherited this condition from me and my older son died soon after that of a massive heart attack, BUT he was a heavy smoker. Not fair you say. So me and younger son on statins for 15 years. About 3 years ago became vegan and my diet now is super-strict sort of by default. A doctor recently told me that I have the lowest cholesterol numbers he'd ever seen. I'm currently into intermittent fasting and have lost 20 pounds so far, so triglycerides must be nosediving. I've realised that mild depression had led to overeating and weight gain. My target BMI is getting close. Complicated! Diet won't do it all, so unfortunately medication is sometimes necessary, although with the weight loss, etc., I might get my cardiologist to lessen my medication dose. (BTW, I'm gonna try Brazil nuts and hit the chocolate!) I'm already into pretty much all the foods you've mentioned here. You guys add some solid authority to what I gather from other scattered sources. P.S., I avoid fish oil, of course, so take EPA & DHA algae supplement capsules - get the Omega 3s from where the fish get them. P.P.S., smoked paprika TASTES LIKE BACON!!!

..Let your doctor know about your muscle pain. It is a sign that the medication is causing you problems and should have your dose lowered or stopped. Try taking Chromium Picolinate (Cinsilin at Costco) for your cholesterol & garlic. Also, add CoQ10. It will protect your heart. (I was told to take this a little over 10 yrs ago by a dr who diagnosed me with sleep apnea. When I had a heart attack 2 years ago my cardiologist who did my angio said my arteries were as clean as a 20 yr old. The heart attack was electrical.

Great to see a focus on prevention of disease thru diet and exercise. All doctors need more nutrition training in Medical school and should spend some time educating their patients during doctor visits. You are the exception as to providing nutrition education and that is the sad part. Proper nutrition is key to good health. High blood pressure, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, being over weight, and cancer can all be impacted by what you eat.

Hello docs - I was wondering where you two were! Hope you’re having a great summer. The cholesterol lowering food suggestions are interesting. I’ve been battling the high cholesterol demon for decades now and I have to say that it has negatively impacted on my enjoyment of food. I’ve given up cheese, meats, butter, alcohol in an attempt to get it under control and still have to take a statin. As I get older I’m rethinking whether it’s really necessary (and worth it). Might be better to pop my clogs with a slice of Brie in one hand and a glass of red wine in the other. At least I’d go out with a smile on my face rather than spinach in my teeth. If I find out one day that all this dietary restriction has been pointless I’ll be some *issed. Thanks for being uplifting and encouraging. Dr. Brad, I hope your tomatoes ripen - fried green tomatoes are quite good but better with butter. ;-)

My old experience. I did APOE genome test. Which showed me that I was not at risk for heart problems but possible cholesterol in the blood. I’ll find that red rice yeast works wonderfully I love your show today it is one of my favorite you guys have done so far. Yes on fiber. Too many almonds contain arsenic. Yes on more walnuts and lighter on the almonds. In the future they will come up with biological genome mapping. One item might be healthy for one person and cause problems for another person. So glad to hear that doctors are more on board with preventative as we must integrate both systems. Back in the late 80s I was Dr. Jonathan Wright MD and naturopath assistant in his clinic Tahoma clinic in Washington. Way back then he would integrate prescriptions sometimes but a lot of times preventative. Why did the skeleton end up in jail for rolling down the hill❓ Because it’s illegal to roll your own joints. At least in some states. 😂 My opinion is most all diseases I found it on inflammation in the body. I call it Inflammaging. Thank you once again this was very very informative. Now I’m gonna go jump in my outside ice bath drink my green shake and take a nice long walk at the beach. I love you guys but I don’t wanna end up on the table. But if I did you need to come to where I live and perform the surgery!!! lol 🤗🤗💃💃💃

I do most of these. I eat a lot of dried refried beans I make in boiling water in a coffee cup and that's dinner. I just had a check up with my dr. He stared at the computer and picked up the 3 problems he sees for me. I am a strict vegetarian and wouldn't eat fish. I love half an avocado for lunch but they have been terrible for months in southern region of the US...dark and moldy inside. I am a diabetic that takes an injection once a month. My dr. gave me 15 min. of time where he did all the talking and looked only at his computer. He said for me to take statins which I know can be bad but I have no heart problems. He said to go back on a BP pill. My BP has been running low almost too low...90/50. Does the color of the grape make a difference? I like the dark ones and not the green ones. I work out hard and eat very clean...nothing processed, no butter or margarines, light on dairy except for cottage cheese and greek yogurt. My last A!C is the lowest I have ever had at 6.2. My dr. said if I was healthy that would be fine but I need to be around 5. I felt so defeated after working my butt off so hard that now I am just going to do what I want. I am 69 and worked a lot of wt. off. Help guys. I am only familiar with barley in soup so what am I missing. I eat bags of salad like potato chips.
