I have a blackberry flavored drink next to me and it is red, also in spanish we call it "mora" which is realted to one of our words for purple "morado", and is part of of a combination called "frutos rojos" red fruits which also includes strawberries, cherries, cranberries and raspberries sometimes even blueberries are added into that, and it is an icecream flavor or even a tea flavor. My guess is Santi may have been referring to that.

Quite a long time ago there was a Lawsuit between some parents and Caprisun. As a result of this lawsuit, Carpisun was forced to make the bottom of their packages clear. So when I was younger, I got some of these clear bottom packages and was surprised that basically all the flavors were clear. This made me wonder what other "juice" drinks that hid the color of the liquid looked like, and after pouring a bunch of different drinks into cups I learned that, if you can't see the juice drink without transferring it into a different container, then they don't bother to color it most of the time. So TLDR: I have known for years that most fruit punches aren't red.

Honestly they probably were all red tinted in the 60's with some red dye #5 but since we figured out how bad that dye is we forced manufacturers to not use that red dye so they kept it on the package to harken back to the heyday of red colored punch while not coloring it to either abide by our much healthier standards or look less unnatural.

I'm French and I find the difference in vocabulary and culture quite interesting. What you call fruit punch would be called multifruit juice here and I personally don't necessarily associate the color red with fruits in general, but only with berries. What we call a Punch in French is a cocktail with a Rhum base and juice (usually orange, pineapple or other exotic fruits) there is also Ti-punch which is a Caribbean cocktail with rhum, cane sugar (either solid or liquid) and straight lime juice.

You got the historical use of pineapple in the original punch wrong. At the 8:15 mark you make a statement about current pineapple production in India and assumed that was what it was like during the age of sail. This is completely incorrect. The pineapple is actually originally from the Americas. It was a rare luxury in Europe during the age of sail because it could only be grown in greenhouses. Large scale cultivation of pineapples was limited to the Americas for centuries until it was introduced to Hawaii, which then became the center of pineapple production. Large scale pineapple cultivation didn't make its way to southeast Asia until the 20th century. So, in conclusion, pineapple would not have been a part of the original sailor's punch outside of trips around the Caribbean.
