I never thought I'd see the day that Matpat not only references Bill Wurtz in an episode opener, style the title card after Wurtz's "entire history of the world, I guess" but then also make a theory that is (in essence) a bread version of that same video. Anyways, definetly my favorite food theory (no reason in particular...).

@R.B.9011 ай бұрын
Well if you wrote a paper on it in culinary school then I'm sure you know that's not exactly true. That's a very Eurocentric perspective. As stated in this video majority of the world did not rely on wheat as their primary food source. So no, bread is not the reason I am alive, nor is it part of my diet today.

@@R.B.90 I agree with you that bread is not the reason we are alive today, but I think that Matt Patt’s point in the video, which I don’t completely agree with, is that, whichever societies have the bread, have the power, which would actually correlate with the West consistently controlling the world since Rome (although the Muslim world did almost take that away, but they more or less forever lost their chance at Poitiers in 732, where their invasion of Europe was stopped by Charles Martel). However, I do think that this correlation between bread and power is either, just that, purely correlation, or, that it is just one of many things that determines which societies end up on top.

When I was eight, my teacher asked the class what food would we eat if that was the only thing we could eat for the rest of our life and I said bread. She said I would get sick of it, but I argued against that until the end of class. If you are what you eat, I am bread, and ONLY bread.

It's from Jean Jaques Rousseau's book series 'Confessions' which were written in 1765, before Marie Antionette arrived in France (she would have been nine). Rousseau wrote At length I remembered the last resort of a great princess who, when told that the peasants had no bread, replied: "Then let them eat brioches." The great princess mentioned was probably meant to be Maria Theresa, wife of Louis XIV, but is probably Rousseau's invention, it being the sort of anti-royalist sentiment of 'that's the kind of thing they say'. There is no contemporary attribution to Marie Antionette - the first mention of it being her being in Alphonse Karr's Les Guêpes in 1843. Alexander Dumas, in 1853, also attributes the phrase to a courtier rather than the queen.

7:55 CORRECTION: MatPat says at this moment that Xerxes invaded Greece in the year 300. This is wrong as he actually invaded around 480BC. The number 300 refers to the 300 Spartans that courageously fought (and almost won) against the Persians in the Battle of Thermopylae.
@wscamel22611 ай бұрын
If Persians invaded Greece in the year 480BC Then why didn't spartans fought Persians until 180 years later??
@cena80311 ай бұрын
@wscamel226 They didn't. The Greco-Persian Wars took place between roughly 492-479. Persia didnt really exist come 300 BC, it was conquered by Alexander the Great in 330 BC and by 300 BC its lands would largely be apart of the diadochi successor states following Alexander's death. The Seleucid Empire was founded in 312 BC, lasted until 64 BC when it was conquered itself.

I once heard that "grass domesticated people". People shaped their entire lives to making grass, then wheat, grow and grow well. To protect it from predators like mice and rabbits, cure it of disease, give it water when it's thirsty, shelter it when its cold, and replant it when it dies. The bond between wheat and people has always been fascinating to me. And now this... THIS is what I call COOL food for thought!

A key correction: Wheat is a modern invention (relatively speaking). The ancient Egyptians farmed kamut / khorsan to make bread and imo it tastes better than wheat. It's also healthier. Do yourself a favor and bake yourself some kamut bread at home sometime. It's really good. Also, potato was key to historic civilization in South America. Maybe it couldn't be transferred the same way as grains, but it grows just about anywhere making it easy to farm in a difficult to get to place, perfect for a civilization hidden in the mountains. In Africa, it's cassava.
