How have you ignored the historical namesake? According to Wikipedia: "The sandwich is named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, an eighteenth-century English aristocrat. It is said that he ordered his valet to bring him meat tucked between two pieces of bread. It is commonly said that Lord Sandwich was fond of this form of food because it allowed him to continue playing cards, particularly cribbage, while eating, without using a fork, and without getting his cards greasy from eating meat with his bare hands." This should at least be considered when defining sandwiches. Clearly a hot dot with moderate condiments could be consumed whilst playing cribbage.

Note that the "easy to eat with the hands" is an important part of a sandwich. If you have a super sloppy mass of condiments between two slices of bread, that is known as a "mess", not a sandwich! This also includes "bone-in" "sandwiches" - they are messes, not sandwiches (unless the bones are eaten as well). This is why "sandwiches" at Jersey Mike's served Mike's Way are NOT sandwiches!

I had an idea regarding the definition of a "sandwich" A sandwich is any food with a bread related base, regardless of filling and can be classified as several types and sub-types: True Sandwich: 2 slices of regular loaf bread with any filling. Sub-True Sandwich: 2 slices of other bread based material (bagel, tortillas, submarine, burger bun, etc.) with any filling, as long as both sides are not connected physically like a (hotdog bun, taco, etc). Open-Pseudo-Sandwich: Only 1 piece of bread related base material with any topping but an open form (such as pizza). Closed-Pseudo-Sandwich: Only 1 piece of bread related base material with any filling and a closed form (such as a tortilla). Semi-Parted-Pseudo-Sandwich: Only 1 piece of bread related base material with any filling and a Half-closed/open form (such as a hot-dog, taco, etc). The reason "Is a hotdog a sandwich" feels like such an unanswerable mess is because we lack any sort of logical food taxonomy for classification. It's like in the 1800s when naturalists were arguing over what plant counts as a bush and what counts as a tree. It's an impossible question to solve because the two categories lack distinction. Instead, we found that dividing life in to Kingdom, Phylum, etc etc, genus, and species allowed us to classify every living thing on the planet coherently and the question of "is this a bush or tree" became a moot point. This is what needs to happen for food. Is a hotdog a sandwich? Irrelevant.Through what classification order does a hotdog derive? Now THAT is a useful question.

Correction to this episode on the justice ruling: Since the justice used a definition from a dictionary, that definition is now common law in that district. Therefore, any case within that jurisdiction is bound to that specific definition of a sandwich, regardless if the dictionary changes it or not. I never buy egg salad sandwiches, I always make them at home. That means that I sometimes get lazy with the chopping and end up with slightly absurd chunks of egg. As I use three eggs per two pieces of bread, that's a thick spread. Would that not count as a sandwich then? In conclusion: There is no conclusion and the world of culinary arts is a cold and ruthless wild west.

There is 3 categories which every food can go: -Sandwiches : A meal which you stack ingredients (you can have a sandwich of bread for example with 2 slices) -Soups : Mostly liquid foods (can have a bit of solid food in it) -Salads : One or a bunch of food you put together, in piece or not (a fruit is a salad of on ingredient) Technically a hotdog is a sandwich, you can try with other foods, each of them can be in those categories.

The Merriam-Webster website has this to say about the matter: “Definition of sandwich (Entry 1 of 3) 1a : two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between b : one slice of bread covered with food” A split roll having a filling in between you say.... hmmm sounds like it could easily define a hotdog 🌭 Also the definition used in sandwich case would leave subs outside of the sandwich realm as the roll is never (at least in the normal case) fully separated, meaning it’s 1 contiguous piece of bread. Another Aside, what would be the definition of ‘thin’? I’ve had some sammiches with some thicccc bread before, and would still consider them as sammiches.

I did an entire essay back in highschool about a grilled cheese sandwich, spent days researching sandwichs, history and anatomy, technically a sandwich doesn't need two pieces of bread, it can be one, heck look at every subway sandwich, regardless, a hotdog is a sandwich, and by that means, most grains and dough also count, so also sandwiches are jelly donuts, taco, peta bread pockets, and yes, technically, an egg roll. Pop tarts, ravioli, which reminds me, Pop tarts are basically ravioli, ravioli is basically stuffed noodles, pop tarts are noodles. Fight me.

I prefer lucidchart’s explanation: no starch creates a salad, one side of starch is toast, two sides is a sandwich, three is a taco, four is a sushi, five is a quiche, six is a calzone, and layers of starch is a cake. So a pizza could either be toast or a quiche depending on whether the crust on the sides rises above the toppings in the middle, a burrito is halfway between sushi and a cake because the wrap often has some part where multiple layers exist, or possibly a quiche or calzone rather than sushi if one or two of the ends are sealed, putting an extra piece of bread in the middle of your sandwich makes a cake, and a steak is a salad...

MatPat may have made a reference to it at the beginning, but I would like to draw everyone's attention to the "Cube Rule of Food". As far as I can find, the "cube rule of food" originated from a Twitter post from user Phosphatide in March of 2018, who presented an image detailing the classifications of different foods based on the location of the starch in relation to the 'additions' (Including anything that falls under both 'toppings' and 'fillings'). The image not only lays a solid foundation for the definition of 'sandwhich', but also for things like 'toast', 'taco', and several other food nomenclatures. Phosphatide seems to have reverse-engineered a 'common sense' type approach and then using the broadest terms to describe/define. What makes a sandwich a 'sandwich'? According to the Cube Rule of Food, any assortment of two separate intact starches with any number of non starch/different starch ingredients between them. Nobody with 'common sense' could argue that any example using this formula is NOT a sandwich. Also, I think that by changing the identifier 'bread' to 'starch' it saves on trying to define 'bread' and including the other types of wrappings (I.e corn/flour tortillas, potato bread, buscuit, begal, etc). It is my firm belief that a sandwich is defined as any filling betwixt two separate pieces of bread. By this definition, a hot dog CAN be a sandwich if the top and bottom of the bun become separated. If it remains one bread, it is stuffed bread.

Personally I slice the bun into separate pieces and melt American cheese onto both buns also toasting the buns in the process. I then slice my hot dog longitudinally and lay the slices cut-side face down on the bottom bun. I spread a mixture of guacamole and mayo on the top bun. My final act is to bring the two halves together as a sandwich. As with all sandwiches, I then cut it in half horizontally to make two small handheld and nicely portioned sandwiches. This makes sandwiches easier to eat without making the other half into a mess and easier to save for later if I am full after the first half.

I can tell you as a culinary student according to our definition in our culinary textbooks -pizza -hot dogs -open face sandwich -or any filling between or on a piece of bread. The actual formal definition in out textbook word for word is "Any filling cold or warm on a single/two/ or more pieces of bread, roll, bun, peta, tortilla, or wrap." It's such a broad term it's not even funny sometimes in class. Sandwich isnt a broad group really, it is an "overflow" grouping meant to catch things that other terms don't catch. Wraps, tacos, hotdogs, they have names that fit them better that won't confuse anyone when you ask for one. Terms only have meaning when they have utility and if someone who wants a quesadilla doesnt ask you to make them a sandwich, then calling one a sandwich has no utility. And "open face sandwich" isn't a thing.

The merriam webster now defines a sandwich as "two pieces of bread or a spilt roll with a filling inbetween." Aswell as the definition being given from the court excluding other well know sandwichs like cheesesteaks and subs. We should also keep in mind that the way the bread is cut also has a roll and was intentional, as it was for other sandwichs like subs and cheesteaks. The reasoning behind the split roll was so that the filling of the sandwich would not fall out by sandwiching the fillings to ensure a less sloppy meal. Hotdogs I feel are more of a universal food, because even though yes, they are sandwichs by definition they are also tacos aswell because they also fit the definition.

Just checked the Merriam-Webster dictionery and the defenition of a sandwitch is: a: two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between b: one slice of bread covered with food so I guess that a hotdog is a sandwich

To be honest it kinda feels like the same situation where “moose” refers to both an individual and a group of moose. Sandwich would be a overlapping term describing any product based around a bread like substance used as an edible utensil while also having there be a few true sandwiches which can include the term “sandwich” in their name. Just like how there’s Disney princesses but then also the elite club.

Haha, I actually had a discussion on this at work last week. We didn't bring up hot dogs, but sandwiches was heavily discussed. The end sandwich definition we made was something along the lines of "one or more slices of a precooked carb with some form of topping or stuffing." This lead to pizza only counting as a sandwich when the dough is precooked. It was a fun discussion.
