I did this in a panic about 10 years ago. I was supposed to bring the mashed potatoes over for Thanksgiving and completely forgot. All of the stores were closed and I had to leave in 20 minutes. I looked in my pantry and saw the 4 Costco bags of Classic Lays I bought a week earlier and the gears started turning. I put them into a food processor and turned the chips into powder, added Half & Half and Butter, made mashed potatoes; then when I got there, I shoved them into the oven and baked them, the butter then melted and baked into the potatoes. Everyone loved them.

Pringles actually contain a considerable proportion of wheat. the chip industry actually campaigned to block Pringles from labelling themselves as "potato chips" based on this, and they succeeded. that's why they're "crisps" edit: this comment originally said "chips" instead of "potato chips" and has been updated for accuracy, at the suggestion of several commenters. after their Indiana launch in 1968, and following rapid growth, the snack industry attempted to fight back by claiming they couldn't be marketed as "potato chips" because they aren't sliced from potatoes. this culminated in 1975 with the FDA weighing in with agreement, resulting in the branding change. according to some sources, the FDA would've allowed the "potato chips" branding if the branding also called out that they were made with dried potatoes, and Proctor & Gamble (the owning company) declined and chose to change the branding to "crisps"

That's actually not true. It was the company who makes pringles themselves that petitioned the British government to get them not labled as chips to avoid a junk food tax. I discovered you can make really smooth potatoes like those flaky potatoes out of real potato's if you whip them in a mixer. Cook the potato like normal after cutting and skinning them and than throw them in the mixer with some butter, sour cream and milk. It is way better than the bagged potato and its the same consistency depending on how long you whip it. It's the consistency for me with mashed potato that make me like the bagged stuff more. I recently discovered why I preferred flakes over homemade mashed potatoes. I felt like a sinner until I finally confessed to my mom and she casually told me it was because of her recipe. I think she makes it with sour cream? and the flakes don't. So then she made an adjusted batch and it was awesome.

Ideas if you decide to revisit this theory: 1.Experiment with liquid to potato chips ratio (more chips and less liquid may make better results) 2. Use blender or food processor so chips are better broken 3. Add some milk and spices maybe even some butter like you would in home mash potatoes
@Kahadi2 жыл бұрын
That might help with the Lays and other kinds, but none of that resolves the Pringles issue of having so much corn starch and other starches and so little potato. The best you could manage there would be to hide the texture with various other ingredients, the flavour too (thus why the cheese ones sort of worked better). There may be other kinds of chips that work even better than Lays though, which could make for a good follow up
@th3R0b0t2 жыл бұрын
@@Kahadi yea... you'd need a NileRed episode of extracting the corn starch from pringles so he could make actual mashed potatoes from Pringles.

This Food Theory episode just sounds like a Pringles commercial with extra steps...and justification for Idaho to go to war against the virgin fake potatoes A second control group could have been peeling, cutting, and boiling actual potatoes, then mashing the result with some butter, salt and dairy liquid of choice. I know that making them with actual potatoes is more work, but I just don't like the instant stuff. Also, sour cream and onion is the best Pringles flavor imo and it's a shame I don't see it here

Talking about being at Disneyland during a chip thing is actually pretty fitting, considering another chip, Doritos, was invented at Disneyland. To be more specific it originated from Disneyland's trash. The story goes that shortly after the park opened in 1955, Walt gave Frito-Lay permission to open an "authentic" Mexican restaurant called Casa de Fritos. As the name suggests, it was all about Fritos. They contracted their tortilla production to a group called Alex Foods. One day, one of their salesmen noticed stale tortillas in the trash. He came up with an idea, convincing the chef to fry them and sell them as chips so they wouldn't go to waste. A genius idea that is now an iconic brand.
