When I was small and occasionally even now, I find it very satisfying to smush milk chocolate M&M’s between my thumb and index finger before eating them. I deliberately let the chocolate warm up a just a tad bit by say for example, leaving an unopened bag in my pocket for a minute or two… There’s just something about the compression and rupturing of the candy shell that is satisfying in much the same way people find it satisfying to pop bubble wrap…

English, believe it or not, has changed in the last 80 years. The original slogan was referring to the chocolate melting onto your hand, meaning the chocolate isn't getting onto your fingers. Be that as it may, once you bite through the shell, the chocolate is most definitely melting in your mouth,

That being said yes it melts in the shell just like he proved and just like you're saying here that's a good phrase but it doesn't compare it to say a chocolate bar which does melt directly onto your hand I think we all kind of understand this and this episode is kind of a splitting hairs episode and that's cool because that's why we okay I'm going to go take a shower now and just enjoy the episode and kind of zone out

The Shell lets you snack, without the mess! is even better because its truthful, simple, and fulfills the role of comparing it to other things like Chocolate bars and addressing the actual issue of them melting in your hand. Instead of having a chocolate bar with the mess, have a M&M with the shell.

You should see if the chocolate in M&M’s hardens back up. And that might be the point of military shipment. It melts but stays in cased in the sugar shell to later be hardened after shipment. As if nothing happened in the bag, unlike their chocolate bar counterparts.

The slogan should be "melts in your mouth not ON your hand." So while the physical process of melting happens inside the shell whilst the m&m is IN your hand, the milk chocolate theoretically doesn't make it outside if the shell ON your hand. It's the semantics and prepositionality of it all for me 😂

Also when you hold the m&m’s (for like four minutes) while it melts on the inside it is still solid and yes, when you crush it, it’ll ooze but it’s advertised as candy and put that thing in ur mouth and it’ll ooze in your mouth. Not to mention that when popping the m&m’s in your mouth (like a normal person)it isn’t melted by your hand even slightly because of the shell and because you break the shell with your teeth it’ll melt in your mouth. The problem with how matpat “proved” m&m’s melt in your hand is that he went out of his way to make the m&m’s melt my holding it for a long time. It’s like if someone said “HEY GUYS IMMA PROVE THAT ROCKS ARE FLAMMABLE” and then took a rock, poured lighter fluid on it and lit it on fire.

@@johnnyslokes2712 Exactly, it isn't melting in your hand, but once you bite through that shell and the chocolate is exposed, it certainly melts in your mouth. I think he's reading the slogan more like if a person were found crushed inside a car after the car had been crushed in a car crusher, we wouldn't blame the car, we'd blame the car crusher. So, since your hand is making the chocolate melt through radiant heat, he's technically correct. But, since the chocolate isn't melting onto your hand, the slogan still reads true.

Ohhh yeah, like how blue makes it look less appetizing, hence why blue glasses used to be a diet fad, cause it made the food look less appealing. The psychological reason behind certain brands using colors and other textures would help explain why some food is seen much more appealing when it's colors are different,though the food alone would be something seen as gross.

To be totally fair, this is generally taking the slogan a bit too literally. The candies accomplish their task of not melting "in" your hand by simply not covering your hand in chocolate while you're trying to eat them. it doesn't mater that the chocolate is already melted inside the shell, it's meant to keep that chocolate from melting "onto" anything other than the inside of your mouth. which is referring to the phrase of "melting onto" something. regardless of if the chocolate is already molten by the time it gets to your mouth, the only place the chocolate is actually being released from it's candy shell, is in your mouth. that's why it was successful as a candy for sending to troops, because open bars of chocolate became a nightmarish mess to handle, but the M&Ms were still solid pieces of candy. even if they were just a little softer than usual.
@atirkahn
@atirkahn 2 жыл бұрын
I totally agree, in my eyes the slogan still definitely stands up, since at no point does the chocolate get to your hands and coats them, it coats your mouth and taste buds - which is exactly what the slogan is trying to accomplish 🤷🏻‍♂️ So in my opinion this theory doesn’t really hold any water… (unlike the shells holding in the chocolate! You've actually convinced me that the slogan isn't as false as I thought it was. I've always just thought of the reaction that leaves the coloring on your hand as being a result of melting, but, as you've shown here, that was wrong. Focusing on the milk chocolate, though, the slogan rings absolutely true. The chocolate isn't melting in your hand because the chocolate isn't IN your hand. It is in the candy coating. You held it for 4 minutes and that coating wasn't even close to dissolving enough to let the chocolate melt into your hand. In your mouth, however, the candy coating will dissolve fast enough that the chocolate will indeed melt in your actual mouth. Conclusion: Mars nailed that slogan.
