The Juan Soto Nationals may be a streaky team, but Juan Soto is perhaps the most consistent man in baseball. The 20 year old rocketed into the majors last year and immediately became one of the best hitters in baseball. In this episode of Baseball Bits, an MLB video essay series presented by Foolish Baseball, we'll be talking about Juan Soto minors days, as well as 2018, the Juan Soto rookie year. Heck, we even rewind all the way back to the amateur Juan Soto days when he was doing showcases.
The Washington Nationals are lucky to have a player of this talent, especially after the departure of Bryce Harper. We'll also talk about Trout as we find the MLB best rookie seasons. This also functions as a discussion of the best 19 year olds in MLB, and best teenagers in MLB. You can't bring up Juan Soto without having a conversation about the best young hitters in the league.
So while we'll talk about young Bryce Harper and young Mike Trout, we'll also talk about Ty Cobb, Mel Ott, and Tony Conigliaro for added historical context.
We'll also see how Juan Soto rocketed through the minor leagues in 2018. That Juan Soto 2018 is certainly a season to remember, but equally impressive is Juan Soto 2019.
The biggest takeaway is that Soto's OBP is elite, and that's what sets him apart. He is the Dominican god of walks. Juan Soto walks 15-16% of the time, which is pretty darn rare.

@@ScottieBoy99902 I'd disagree with the idea of incorrect perception. Arenado's perhaps the greatest defensive/offensive consistent third basement of the decade. Like when it's a Sunday night, and teams like the Rays and Nats are facing each other, both vying for a division title, but ESPN puts a game on featuring either the Yankees or Mets playing a team that is going nowhere. And in the Mets case, they are most likely going nowhere as well. ESPN is a do-nothing organization when it comes to promoting baseball nationally. They think the boundaries of baseball extend from New York to Boston only. Year after year, it's so sickening. We need another all-sports network.

Loved the video. Another thing that attests to how unusual he is for a 20 year old: he's done a fantastic job of addressing his weaknesses. After last season, opponents realized that if he's thrown a fastball he will crush it, and if he's thrown an offspeed pitch outside the zone he'll lay off. So he started seeing a ton of offspeed pitches in the zone this season and he really struggled at the beginning. But he adjusted and now his numbers are back up to where they were last year. His defense has also improved a ton over the past couple of months. I don't think the defensive stats have caught up yet, but if you watch the Nats every day it's obvious how much he's improved. But honestly, as cheesey as it sounds, my favorite thing about him is how much fun he has and that he's always smiling.

Brashnir I know you want to pretend I didn’t watch Tony Gwynn play, which is your call, I don’t care, but he never had 83 walks or 100 strikeouts in August, ever, not close, in his 20 years, so his two-strike approach automatically isn’t similar to Soto, and wasn’t pitched to in a similar way, at all. Pitchers didn’t fear his power, because he had none, so he’d ultimately keep being fed hittable strikes, so he would rarely strike out. At-bats nearly always ended with a ball in play. With Soto, on the other hand, pitchers ultimately want him to chase a ball out of the zone to induce a strikeout, or take a pitch on the corner for strike three. If he doesn’t chase, he walks. Unless you are just referring to fouling off borderline pitches in the middle of an at-bat waiting for a better pitch, fine, but nothing about what matters most( the pitch that ends the at-bat), is similar to Tony Gwynn, and never will be.

@@Brashnir Soto is a much different player than Carew and Gwynn. Carew and Gwynn are both good defenders with speed, Soto is not. I’m sure you’re aware of his struggles since becoming a padre. Did he have slump like this in Washington ?
@tomw485
@tomw485 Жыл бұрын
@@jonny-dp2qr Not really. He was amazing for nearly his entire time in DC. In 2022 his production did fall a bit over prior seasons but he still had over a .400 OBP and nearly a .900 OPS that season before he was traded to SD so it’s hard to say he ever really struggled during his time in DC.

@tomw485 Жыл бұрын
@@jonny-dp2qr Yeah I hate to see the guy struggle even with a different team. I have to think this is temporary though. He is just far too talented not to figure it out. Sometimes I think when guys have so much success at such a young age the expectations get out of control and the pressure gets to them. Bryce Harper had a similar regression while he was still with the Nats. Then he went back to putting up MVP caliber numbers a couple years in with the Phillies.
