Also, the belief that "soccer" is just like an activity that you send your kid to so that they exercise, rather than a respected sport. The MLS is also very young compared to the other leagues too and the passion for "soccer" is kinda starting to hype up now a bit more but it will still take decades for a "soccer" culture to truly develop in the USA.

There are soccer teams in the US, Canada and Australia that go back to the 1890's, but they are not in the premier leage of their countries and never will, and there are others that are not in the top league that would have an atmosphere similar to europe's teams, I mean, NY Cosmos for instance... if they played in the MLS they would absorb the fans of all the other NY teams and they would always have their stadium full and they would have the ambient closest to the one in europe football!

That was the Romanian national anthem at the end. AC Milan fan living in Milan here. If you're curious, the chant is based on a famous song from 1981 "Sarà perchè ti amo" and the spelling is changed in "Sarà perchè tifiamo". The translation of what they say at the end is "who doesn't jump is a juventus fan" and all the stadium starts jumping. When we play at home in San Siro, at the beginning of the match, they put the original song on the speaker and mute the part changed by the chant to let the people sing. It's really beatiful and the whole stadium participate

In the US teams have nothing to lose if they don't do well. If they finish bottom they just finish bottom and start again next season. In Europe if you finish bottom or close to it you get relegated, lose players, money, sponsors etc. That saps a lot of passion that could otherwise be there because once you know you wont win you're not really playing for anything.

This is one of the things il never understand about American sports there is no punishment or jeopardy for being bottom or close to bottom same goes for the play offs I don’t see sense in having a Cup competition only being played by 14 teams based on where they end the season just have all the teams it allows for those special runs a team does that aren’t expected to do well one of the reasons the fa cup in English football is so good a team from several leagues below can go to a top team like Liverpool or Manchester City and take them out of the cup

If you don't think teams get affected financially by team performance then you're just ignorant of business and team management in general, every professional sport that deals with sponsors and salary expenditure for the players along with team exposure across any sport has those same issues, it just scales based on the size. Also massive salary caps exist in US sports like basketball and american football.

Its easy. In some parts of Asia and Europe, the city is basically represented by football. Football is their life, soul, religion, fatherhood, identity whatsoever. Fans bleed for these clubs, which is why there are ultras. And ideologies and politics also plays a part in rivalry. In the US, sports is just an entertainment. People come just to watch a television program. There might be fans who are influenced by the terrace culture, but normal spectators just come there for entertainment.

If you want to see what it was like in the 1980s check out teams like Red Star Belgrade, SSC Napoli in Italy, Greece, Turkey, etc. The entire stadiums were filled with smoke that always took 20 minutes to even clear up. There was less seating at the time and less latte sippers attending games. Made for a very different atmosphere.

Well it was cheaper back then, much less rules and much much less security. Inevitable when they make being a supporter more expensive with higher prices for tickets, merchandise and uniforms. Bigger stadiums are harder to get immersed in, you feel so far from the action IMO. Great Reaction, as usual, my friend. The reason only that section of PSG fans were singing was that they were playing away from home and above them and all around the other parts of the ground were Home fans. In fact you can see the stadium security guys penning them in and also standing in front of them :)

Think you don't really know what's going on in the Parc des Princes with PSG.Everytime a player of the other team just touch the ball,all the people there(almost 50 000),minus the supporters of the other team (1000) in a special tribune are shouting "enculé",which means "Fucked in the ass" .Like if all fans of a club in US would Scream "Motherfucker" . A PSG fan is really dedicated to his team The PSG fan singing is often in two parts.The fans in the Boulogne part and the fans in the Auteuil part are singing and each has his turn,like questions,answers. The singing of the songs for all the Parc des Princes are initiated by the Ultras,the greatest fans of PSG The singing encourage the PSG players.It shows that PSG fans are proud of PSG team,and Paris .Not what you said.They loved soccer. The security is there because there's always some stupids fan,even it's rare.The Paris fans got respect for everybody.

@Németh László I feel bad for your experience, there are some very closed-minded people out there. The same goes to Hungarians, I've also been to Oradea and talked to people there and some Romanians said that they went to some shops owned by Hungarians and they didn't respond in Romanian they were stubborn and responded only when the Romanians spoke in Hungarian. A lot of the Romanians don't know Hungarian nowadays so it can be difficult. I bet you must be like 15, your behaviour is very childish and vengeful. Imagine what happened to you in Oradea happened for hundreds of years to Romanians in Transylvania. Maybe exercise some empathy.
@Roma_Aeterna_SPQR
@Roma_Aeterna_SPQR Жыл бұрын
@Németh László Din you even stopped one second to think why that person had that emotional and hatefull(and shamefull tbh) reaction? Transylvania is a deep, old wound for Romanians. You guys treated Romanians just above cattle when you were running Transylvania. There are witnesses still alive who witnessed the Hungarian genocide of Romanians in the 40's, their families killed in front of them just for fun! FUN! The fun of sticking the baionet in a human body, so they know how it feels like, in front of the family! So, Why would we let you guys govern us again? We are Romanians, you are Hungars. You ruled us in the past because we were divided(by the Roman Empire) and peaceful, while you were the cruelest people that we ever encountered. Your punishements were sadistic and frightening, like slowely and with great satisfaction pulling members apart, skinning alive, taking out organs while alive, and so on... We only wanted to live peacefully but you came and broke our Dacian spirit with unimaginable terror. And now, these days, still want to fu*kin rule us???? The answer is Fu*k NO and if you ever again try any agresion towards us, you will wish to have settled for Trianon. Hungary capitulated once to Romania. Trianon gave you a country of your own, or else Romania would have a fronteer with Austria now-a-days. Don't push your luck. We can see how Hungary is not against Russia in hope that if Russia attaks us from East, you guys attack us from West and take Transylvania... We are not stupid, and our defenses in the mountains are undefeatable even by Russians, let alone Hungars... They can come by the millions! So, there is no "give Transylvania back", because Transylvania belongs to its people, Romanians, wich makes over 70% of the population in Transylvania.

German here: It is common that there is a group of die-hard fans (Ultras) in the stadium. These are usually located at one of the backends of the pitch. This is where you can find the drummers and Capos (Vorsänger). The Ultra groups pride themselves for supporting their team the whole 90 minutes (Dauergesang). This is in contrast to the rest of the stadium that usually only joins in for certain chants or during a period where the team needs additional support.

I was only a kid in 1994 when Hagi won American hearts in the World Cup. Almost any kid in Europe lives, breathes and loves football and knows it's serious. But when Andrés Escobar of Colombia had been gunned down in cold blood for an auto-goal in the match vs. U.S.A., I realized that passion can go too far. Also, My grandfather was a fan of ALL sports, knowing records, names, transfers and even let Me watch I Love This Game at midnight (American basketball was not that popular and the time difference made it hard to stay up for a kid). But, when it came to football, he was wild. He'd always go to the stadium to watch Our local team, Universitatea Craiova, and had a lot of heart attacks, the last of them leaving him semi-paralyzed. Ultras would always hate policemen with a passion, but he was an exception. They always got him home or called an ambulance. They were the once that got him home after his last stroke. It may sound like I am a traitor to My city's team(s), but I now only watch National team games, if any. I can get really crazy involved at matches, guess it's hereditary...

I could be 1000000% wrong, but I think the reason the USA has such weak atmospheres in ALL their sports compared to the rest of the world is because of the accessibility. Ticket prices here are insane meaning that only wealthier folk and wealthier families get to attend games, whereas the average fan probably doesn’t make enough to actually attend these games. In the EU and the rest of the world, ticket prices are way more reasonable and your average fan would probably be in attendance. This creates a more community based fanbase and a more personal connection to the club, hence why their atmospheres are better.

It is a very individualistic country and it is also visible when chanting , compared to others that go all in together like going to war almost 😂 (maybe not almost, cause that is what fandom is in Europe at least, it's war). Also, for Americans the chant seems to be a competition to impress, in Europe it is raw without needing to impress others . But in Europe an away match isn’t that far out of reach so the visiting side has so many supporters and the atmosphere looks amazing. Here in America the closest club could be a 4 hour drive if you’re lucky. So it’s just a crowd of one side and the atmosphere takes a huge hit I feel.
