I gotta say, I think you really found the perfect reaction formula, lots of people do bad reactions where they just sit there and watch saying "wow" every 10 seconds, some people do talk and try to stop and add stuff but they tend to watch stuff they have no understanding about so they don't do it very well, but you watch videos that you do understand the history behind, and even if you don't the first thing you say at the start of those videos is "I don't know too much about this" but you still add meaningful commentary by showing people who haven't studied history how events are connected, the Shiroyama reaction was the perfect example to me, you said you didn't know a lot about eastern history, but you still managed to add meaningful commentary and went out of your way to look things up whilst watching the video to add to your knowledge and to still add to the video even though you explicitly told us you didn't know too much about eastern history. I decided to write this short appreciation comment because of the stuff you'd said at the start of the video. We all really do appreciate how much you teach us all about history, and even for those of us who've studied history, you still manage to teach us some things.

The term "soccer" comes from the full name of the sport "association football." The British used to call the sport "soccer" for short and exported the term to her colonies. Britain then assimilated with the rest of Europe and began calling it football rather than soccer. However, the term soccer stuck in her former colonies.

Hi! a Colombian here. The story of Andrés Escobar, how was he killed and everything behind it fills the entire country with shame because it is proof of how corrupt was Colombia's football back there and how everything that could be done wrong was actually done. Andres Escobar was one of the most promising players of their generation from Atletico Nacional and he went along with what we know as the ''Golden Generation'' team to the US WC. The entire team was incredibly inflated by Colombian press because of how they played the South american qualifiers including a historic win 0-5 to Maradona's Argentina on 1993. Because of that, Colombia came in as one of the favourites of the tournament according to the local and international press. What happened then? The team could not handle that pressure and crumbled down losing the first match 1-3 against Rumania and then, on the second match against USA, Andres Escobar made an own goal that lead to a final score of 2-1, Colombia was knocked out of the WC on the first stage and the whole country put the blame upon Escobar's shoulders including some powerful people and drug lords that ruled the country after the death of Pablo Escobar 6 months ago. He was killed after a discussion on a night club in Medellin and it was and is still clear that he was killed because of that own goal. The murdered who worked for a powerful drug lord back then, only served 11 years in prison and then was released thanks to good conduct. It tarnished our already spoiled international image and reputation and somehow, we as a nation are still recovering from such dark past.

@1:34 we call American football “football” because AF is actually a variation of Canadian Football, which is actually the first Gridiron football code, and itself derives from Rugby, which itself derives from soccer. Technically, Rugby, AF, CF, Indoor Football, and other “football” sports are all different codes (systems of rules) for the same game, though you’d never know it just by watching.

Not entirely. That comes from England. Soccer comes from association football. Football is a set of codes that have similar traits. American football derives from rugby football. Like soccer, ruggers was the popular turn. The term "football" likely comes from describing the types of team sports. They had two primary types of sports, one being the sports of the aristocracy, who played on horseback (horseball), and the sports played on foot by the peasants (football). One specific type of British football was known as "mob football", which would have two huge masses of people clashing and trying to move an inflated pig bladder by 'any means' to the markets at each end of town, as long as it didn't lead to killing someone. In Orkney, Scotland, they still play a version of this game, called "Ba game". From the mid 1500s to the 19th century, a ball carrying game known as "Campball" or "Camping" would have a somewhat organized system of play that was very similar to Rugby, though far more rough and violent. 17th century through the 19th century, another similar game was played at Rugby School, with the rules being adjusted by the students with the class intake. They codified the rules in 1845. In the 1860s, the rules of football varied wildly at different schools. . So in 1863, the Football Association was formed, and they attempted to unify the rules of Football with "Laws of the Game". Though they couldn't come to an agreement, and officially caused a separation. This effectively would formed the two sports of Rugby and Football/Soccer and both would quickly spread far and wide. Rugby like games were played in the US at College of New Jersey (Princeton) University in 1820, though it was still very much a "mob ball" like game. Yale ended up banning it because it was too violent. In Boston, 1862, a prep school in Boston formed the Oneida College

Ashbourne Royal Shrovetide Football is an annual game descending from that original mob football. Unfortunately there was a fire in the 1890s that destroyed our records of the history of the game, but given the records that survived that fire go back to ~1667, there's common belief within the town that it is the oldest surviving example of the medieval game. And it's pretty much like a second Christmas for all people who've ever lived in Ashbourne.

Colombia was one of the pre-tournament favorites for the 1994 World Cup in the US, even being picked to win it by Pele. After already having lost their 1st match of the group stage the pressure was on Colombia when they played the US in their 2nd match, which is when Andres Escobar redirected a cross into his own goal in a match the US won 2-1 leading to Colombia's elimination in the group stage. After returning home about 8 days later Escobar went to a bar against the advice of his friends (and if I remember correctly also his fiance). In the parking lot he was shot several times. I'll add my voice to those mentioning ESPN's 30 for 30 documentary "The Two Escobars" about Andres and Pablo Escobar (who were not related) being a good documentary for those who want more information about that story.

1:30 in italy it's called calcio which means directly translated kicking. Italy is one of the few nations where football isn't called a variation of foot and ball, but it's called after the verb of kicking because you are kicking the ball.

Rugby and "soccer" are both variations of the game "football." The version which became popular in the US was more closely related to Rugby. The rules evolved (with contributions by Teddy Roosevelt Era Washington, DC) This is my oversimplification, I'd love to see an actual historian delve into the parallel evolutions of the multiple sports under the "football" umbrella. (Bonus points for referencing the roots of Basketball)

i'm not completely sure, but if i remember what my dad told me about it, Colombia lost the match thanks to an own goal that the dude made by accident, and i think the other more "infamous" Escobar was probably somewhat involved with his asssassination... that particular world cup is famous in my country too because we made it there, and we had a good chance of advancing a lot because we had a really strong player, but unfortunately, he was injured in one of the first matches and we didn't advance further...

As I've seen said already, "Soccer" comes from "Association Football", I guess as a bit of a mashup. "Football" is a category of sports, and comes from referring to the fact that it's a sport played on foot and not, say, on horseback, like polo (so it's an old definition and seems odd to us now.) A lot of popular sports nowadays are technically a football sport. Soccer, American Football, Rugby, Basketball, (maybe Hockey, I can't remember). So the name doesn't come from using your feet on the ball, but from playing the game on foot.

The foot in footbal refers to the fact that the sport is played on foot, as opposed to on horseback like polo. To be precise, football is any team sport played on foot in which the objective is to put a ball into a goal of some sort without the aid of a stick-like object.

Watching this old video got me thinking about the power of the banana companies from the USA. Now that you were talking about Colombia, we have a pretty bloodie history with this companies. Back in the 20's of the 20th century, many of the workers from the "United Fruit Company" started protesting because of the unfair labor conditions that they had because of the company and the colombian government policies. In one of those protests, the government decided to shoot the protesters with rifles and machine guns. The events are not clear today, but the most pesimistics estimates say that over a 2000 people died in what we call today "la Masacre de las Bananeras" or "Banana Companies Massacres". Making a huge jump to the early 2000's the Chiquita Brown Company was also in the middle of a HUGE scandal because they have being paying bribes to the paramilitary groups, all of this behind the colombian government back, ande the money the paramilitary groups had from this bribe, help them finance many massacres in the Caribbean coast.

Football is an old term meaning a sport played on foot compared to what rich people played which was on horseback. The reason Americans call it soccer goes back to WW1, when the British had recently taken the term soc from the term "association football" and added cer because its a common term of speech. Since the troops were spending so much time with British troops they picked up the term and when they returned home it made things simpler so it stuck, whereas the British eventually just returned to football instead of soccer.

Backstory on the andres Escobar who was killed after the WC. He played for medellin’s team that was owned by Pablo Escobar and most of the Colombia national team players were raised in communities that Escobar helped fund so they felt loyalty to him and visited him during his prison stay, they arrested the 1st choice keeper prior to the WC because he wouldn’t stop visiting Pablo when they told him to. During the WC they were bombarded by calls at the hotel and voodoo curses. They were told not to come home and stay in a safety house till it calmed down by andres Escobar being the captain and responsible for the OG refused and went out to face the people. The brother that killed him were Pablo Escobar’s rival cartel.

The history behind the term football and soccer is interesting. Basically sports played on your feet were called football as opposed to equestrian sports played by upper class in England on horse back. Early on there weren't many standardized rules but eventually groups came together to set out rules similar to how baseball had different rules set such as the Massachusetts Game vs New York game made by the knickerbockers. The two most prominent football rules were rugby football and association football. The term soccer was created by the English and used for a while there as it is short for association. American football got its name from rugby football with the similar play style especially before forward passing was introduced. There are many other types of football as well, such as Australian rules, Gaelic, and others. Some other countries also use the term soccer, such as Canada, Australia and Ireland (Ireland uses both because of Gaelic football). There's a lot of really fascinating history behind the spread and standardization of sports.
