Kenny deserves a tone of credit though. Most of those players tanked after leaving Blackburn. Like in the late 90's Wilcox, Batty, Sherwood, Ripley, Sutton, Hendry and co were all still playing and most of them were still in their 20's or at the very least early 30's but no one really saw them as guys who could be on title winning teams. Arsenal, United and Liverpool weren't looking at them. If you put that team back together in 99, even with Shearer it wouldn't get near a title.

Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton which resulted in more than 50 goals between the two of them, Blackburn won the Premier League in 1995 That Cinderella story was, however, the end of Blackburn's time in the spotlight. Chris Sutton got injured whereas key players like David Batty and Alan Shearer, were grabbed by other clubs. The passing of Jack Walker in 2000 would mean that Blackburn no longer had the same economical strength.

as a Blackburn fan, I'm very impressed with the research you have done here. When Venky's came in, the club was in a situation where it needed to be sold. The best option was deemed to be Venky's and they relied too much on advice from the wrong people - this story itself is worth a video. On a more positive note, Sammy Szmodics, became the first Blackburn player since Shearer to score 30+ goals this season. It would be great to keep him at the club for another season, but at the same time, he deserves a crack at Premier League
@neilbiggs13536 ай бұрын
As an outsider, I'm slightly disappointed with Venky's. One of the things that really set United on the path to greatness was the way their board went out to build up their commercial partnerships globally, and their commercial advantage is still massive to this day. I'd love to see a video go in to that as it's not often discussed (probably because people don't like thinking of clubs as businesses), because for me this is a key difference between the early Premier League winners. Jack Walker subsidised Rovers, the United owners built the business. This is what intrigued me about Venky's, in that given the number of people of a heritage that traces back to the Indian subcontinent in the area, it seemed like this was a chance to try and build a commercial profile for the club in India, and maybe the other surrounding countries too.What would it mean for example if Blackburn started to develop a number of players in their academy who could represent India in international football? From the outside though, they just seem to be typical owners who don't have a coherent vision of what they can do to take the club forward.

Great documentary. The way Jack Walker was treated by the establishment media was disgusting, especially as (which you pointed out several times here) the same kind of vitriol hasn't been thrown at the Man Cities or Chelseas of this world who both made Walker look like a pauper money-wise and neither bought by someone from this country, let alone a lifelong local fan like Walker was. It obvious the difference in treatment is down to nothing more that marketability. Both Man City & Chelsea had/have big potential fan bases to sell papers to, whereas Blackburn is a small town that was never going to be a gold-mine market so they kicked against us ever being successful and when we were hated it and slated it. I'm glad you highlighted that Man Utd spent far more on transfer fees than Rovers did in our title-winning season as this is something often overlooked

It charts the rise of Blackburn Olympic and the wrestling of the game of football away from the southern toffs. I have great memories partying outside Ewood Park after we won the league. My Grandma lived two streets down from Ewood Park and whenever we couldn't get to a game, we sat in her garden listening to the roar of the fans to guess the score. I worked at Ewood Park for several seasons and got to chitchat with many amazing players such as Pedersen, Tugay, Friedel, Bellamy, Savage, Bentley and more . I love that club with all my heart. This was a wonderful and thoughtful video that capture a lot of what Blackburn and Jack Walker are all about, right down to the club motto, "Arte et Lebore." The one minor gripe I have is, and while I know we're not in the mighty Premier League anymore, but we are only one league down in the Championship, which is not really in obscurity, and we certainly haven't disappeared or never been seen again. I know you're speaking in hyperbole for effect, but it feels strange to hear it put like that, especially considering how important to the town the club is, and also, the title does feel a little bit misleading in that regard. That said, thanks again for all of your research and thoughtful take on this beloved club, it is appreciated. Hopefully we can have another local savior rise up to rescue us from the Venkys' ill-advised era.

Unrelated, I find it interesting that Rovers (i.e Blackburn and Bristol) carry the same meaning as Wanderers (i.e Wolves, Bolton, Wycombe)

Blackburn Rovers are one of the original 12 and not many teams have won more trophies

Those were great times back then. Even as a non-Englishman I loved to see Shearer play, this man was as clinical as it got - and who can forget this famous celebration with the raised hand. I am also very glad he went to Newcastle and not to ManUnited afterwards. It would have been easy for him to go to ManUtd and dominate football for the foreseeable future, but he chose his hometown club instead.

You are absolutely right about the Scottish influence, a lot of clubs from the industrial north west of England had a lot of Scottish players and coaches, what we know of football today (the passing game) was developed north of the border vs. the "public school" ego driven game of "individual skill" practiced by the upper class public schoolboys of Southern England, the fall of these once dominant teams was absolutely profound and inside a decade the game had been completely revolutionised by professionalism

I think that despite not winning the league, Leeds Uniteds fall from consistent Champions League football into the depths of the English league is also a very interesting tale, if you haven't already then maybe you could do a video on them?

Something that 90 Minutes magazine said back in 1997 that stays with me: 'do you think there's a lock up garage somewhere in South East London containing a skip full of Blackburn Shirts with Shearer on the back?'
