A nice oakie Chardonnay, to go with a light fish. A fruity Cabernet, to accompany an assortment of cheese, pairs well with a peppered havarti or cream cheese and basil baguette. ?

Mad respect. I was born with a deformed arm. So I grew up with it. ( Yeah my parents knew I was going to get picked on, so I was in Judo since I was 6 ) When I was born the doctors wanted to cut my natural hook off and Give me a metal hook. my parents asked me when I was about 5 years old and I said no that would make me handicapped. Run what you brung🤟 My daughter and I have a couple blacksmith videos up. Yes I am and have my own blacksmith shop. They call me Nemo.( lol no joke) Don't let anybody tell you that you can't do anything

I had a conversation with my wife as I pursue my own amputation (such a weird thing to say), and said, “It’s insane that I have to cut off my foot to be able to walk the dogs without horrible pain.” The simple daily life things are so missed. You are right that you should do the things you can while you can. You never know how long you will be able to. Nothing is guaranteed. Years ago after knee replacement, I celebrated by getting a skateboard. My best friend questioned the rationale of such an activity at 50 and a litany of injuries. My response was, “I ain’t dead yet so I gotta live.” I hope the coming year brings you many new things, happiness, and continued healing.

Happy Anniversary to you Jo. It's weird that it's been 3 1/2 years since I became an amputee and I have followed you for almost that long. Watching you deal with things associated with your amputation has helped me deal with my own; the only difference is that I HAD to have an amputation, otherwise I would have died. I am glad I found your channel and I am also glad you created this channel. Believe it or not you, in a weird way, have made me feel that it's okay to not be okay, to not be normal, to not conform to other's view of what you are supposed to feel. My journey has been filled with ups and downs, with joy and pain, but as much as I was not a fan of amputation prior to my own it actually was the absolute best thing for me. Please keep doing what you do and I will continue to keep watching this channel and looking to you for inspiration. Thank you Footless Jo.

So glad you could accomplish so many of your goals! Also, a lot of people have said it, but everyone should remember that there is NOTHING WEIRD about using a wheelchair, going for a run/snowboarding/whatever, and then immediately sitting back down in your wheelchair. It gives you time to rest so that you have the ability to do the fun stuff!

I like what you said, "do it while you can, because this won't last forever." It's been really hard to let go of things I can no longer do, but I'm glad I did as much as I could while I could.

I'm a LBKA since 2011, Never give into the pain, find the right doctor even if it takes multiple times they are human and not all knowing. I have taught many doctors and others in the medical field humility at my cost. Had my 4th surgery all four while awake to give feedback, it was interesting to watch and photo and video some of it myself. BUT finally free from horrible pain since 2001 when my accident first occurred. Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston did a case study on my issue because of how rare the condition was. I'm an optimist and have always been able to get through the bad times so do whatever you need to do to stay strong and optimistic. Anyone thinking of having an amputation please visit a Prosthetist months before your surgery if possible even if your in the hospital ask to see one they will make the trip into the hospital to have a discussion with you! Good luck Jo with your next surgery!

I’d love to learn how you found your way back to jujitsu. I remember years ago, you decided it wasn’t safe as an amputee and you were really sad about it. Did you find someone who does adaptive jujitsu? Im also curious about how your nerve pain has changed over the last few years. I know you’ve always had pain. Is there something that caused it to spike? It’s so nice to see you genuinely proud of your accomplishments. More importantly, you seem to recognize your level of emotional resilience over the years.

New Subscriber here and happy anniversary. I love your positive attitude, learning to accept your body especially after a traumatic event that leaves you with a disability is so hard but so important for mental recovery. I’ve been an amputee for 21 years now, accepting my body for what it was and is now was the toughest hurdle for me. Looking forward to following along with your journey.

What a great look back! Congratulations on what you have been through and accomplished! I can relate, to some extent, as I have 4 joint replacements (2 knees, 2 hips - issues with arthritis) and do have pain (or discomfort, pain if I walk more than 5 blocks or am on my feet for more than 20 minutes) still. I'm jealous of the people with joint replacements who have no pain. Anyway, I understand that feeling of knowing that it's a lifelong adjustment and for me as well, things are not going to get better - but I am still mobile. You are an inspiration to me as you have really been through it (and at a much younger age!) and still have a smile on your face. I'm so glad to hear you are listening to your body and that you have also looked at your new wheelchair as just another tool for when you aren't feeling great - instead of a negative (which it's not!). ❤ 🙌🏽

I remember talking to a woman in her early 20s who had been in a motor vehicle accident. One of her feet had been messed up pretty bad. The surgeons had rebuilt her foot, but there were bones that were never going to be quite right and she would have one poking at the middle of her foot every time she stepped on it. I don't know if the bone was angled wrong or if the scar tissue meant that there was no longer enough padding over the area. She was greatful at the time of the accident that they had saved the foot, but came to wish that the foot had just been amputated. Trouble is you can never know how it will work out at the time.

The Lake District and Dartmoor both have some lovely, relatively flat hikes you would enjoy. There's also some great cities like York or Edinburgh you could visit. If you like beaches, I'd recommend Devon or Cornwall (Cornwall is great for surfing and body boarding) and of course the food is amazing in the west country - pasties, cider, local cheeses, etc.

It’s taken me 3.5 years to get here, some broken bones, other injuries, and multiple months of recovery from those injuries in those years, but THE BEST & MOST WORTH The hard work! The community is phenomenal at my school ! I agree 1000% with you Jo that martial arts 🥋 is the heckin’ BEST thing we could have ever done for ourselves! I have knee issues and I can’t jump miles straight up like the really young kids can, but I do my best and work super hard along side my karate brothers and sisters training just as hard while we encourage each other and push each other! ❤🥋 Karate is my sanity! So, YES! Thank you for sharing your journey. I appreciate your honesty. Listening to you listen to mine was not even aware they needed to be heard. Thank you for acknowledging the good the bad and the ugly. Most importantly, thank you that regardless of the adjective being real and how you express yourself. I especially appreciate your choice to focus on the positive. I love musicals; they make my heart smile. They have epic songs to encourage the protagonist at the exact moment when all could be lost if they forget their true character. The two songs that come to mind as I think about what you shared are The Cockeyed Optimist and Accentuate The Positive. My challenges are different from yours but they are ones that are with me daily and many are anticipated to be consistent companions for the rest of my life. I have had tremendous gains in the last 11 years. Despite of a pocket of regression within the last two years where the "two steps forward" seem to also include taking "five steps back" I am much healthier in all aspects than I once was. I am in the process of reclaiming the steps that I have lost in the last two years and I will continue to grow, mature, and shed anything that I have been carrying that God did not design me to carry or that which is not of benefit to the healing journey to which He has called me so I can more reflection His image and who He created me to be. I feel like a butterfly, newly released from it's chrysalis, forcing blood into its wings until they fully expand to their maximum and letting them dry thoroughly in preparation for the journey that lies ahead. My mantra is: I will run well the race set before me, my hand secure in the hand of my Savior's. Even when the journey is difficult I know that I am never alone. In the moments when I cannot run, I will walk. If I cannot walk, I will crawl. If I cannot crawl, I will lean and I will lean hard until I can once again crawl, then walk, then run intentionally continuing in the race until I see Him face to face. (Psalm 1, 71; Hebrews 12:1-3) It seems lately that I have been in "leaning mode" for quite a while. Your video caused me to ponder and take stock. I realized that I have not been leaning as intently as I could/ should be and that I've been doing more sitting than leaning. Thanks for the encouragement to remember the mile markers and for spurring me on in my healing journey. Thanks for giving me a space to share. Blessings.

Keep at it jo! I lost my below the knee leg on my 41st birthday. I think I cried about it for about a half hour. After I said you know what I already have 💩show of a back with Scheuermann's disease and a car accident when I was 22 pushed it forward by 10-15 years. The doctor’s say I have the back of a 100 year man and that was 12 yrs ago. But anyways I haven’t let that stop me from living even though there are days. When I found out about my bone infection in my foot after have a 1.5 inch bone spur removed two weeks prior to the infection, I scared, as I’m sure we all are when we find out. But I just sat in the hospital 2 hours away from any family and said this stuff hasn’t stopped me why should this. My doctor also explained to me that at this point I was becoming a professional patient. That’s what really set in to my mind. I had had so many surgeries over the past 8 years trying to lengthen my right leg so my back wouldn’t be so bad walking with my then 2 year old son. After breaking the rod due the bone not healing completely I have to have another rod put in and put it back at the same height. We then tried to shorten the other leg to match the other. It didn’t want to heal either so had to redo it as well. I also had a ton of surgeries on my right foot as it had a slight club foot and so many other issues. Also you may wonder why not back surgery instead of leg. Well the doctors won’t even consider doing any surgeries on my back as they don’t know where to stop with it as the whole thing is junk. So the leg surgeries where a last resort, but ended not so great in the end. But I must say after deciding to have the amputation done though painful at first has been a huge blessing thus far. Since I found your channel I have begun to set goals for myself to push my self. I got out riding my motorcycle this summer and it was not to different as it’s my breaking leg, my son has now gotten to ride with me and loves it, he’s now 8! I really wanna get to a point where I can run or at least jog with him and run and play games with him. This boy is my whole life, we adopted him when he was 4 got him when he was 2, and I can’t think of a better blessing than him. But I want to be more active with him and I’m slowly getting there. I really got out of shape over the past 8 years of laying on my back with all the surgeries. I can’t ride a bicycle yet, I can’t use my elliptical as of yet but really hoping to when I get my new leg (2nd socket) tomorrow. Super excited to not have to where 21 ply worth of stump socks! Lol But anyways sorry for the novel but wanted you to know that I really look up to you for what your doing, and especially how you push yourself. I really thank you for the inspiration. Also if you like playing basketball, you should try out some wheelchair basketball. My nephew is in a wheelchair and has been playing for years. He had my son and I play a tournament with him for charity a couple months after I lost my leg. I loved it and so far I’m loving playing in a league here in Iowa. I’m not that good at it but I am good at getting the ball and passing it for those that are way more talented at making it in the hoop than I am so it’s better than nothing and it keeps me active. Anyways have a great day, never stop pushing cause we’re not dead yet!!!😂

Congrats on achieving all those goals! And I love how you share the journey. While my story as a disabled person is very different, there's quite some overlap in experiences and feelings. Succes on the path forward, and love from Belgium. ❤️💞

I'm coming up on my 3 yr amputee anniversary November 2. I've had many obstacles. I've had to accept things I can no longer do. I have yet to find a prosthetic leg that fits right for me which is very discouraging

while I have never tried jiu-jitsu, I am a major martial arts advocate, serious respect for you cause martial arts are disciplines that can be hard on the body and challenging to master for someone who has all their limbs. You are made of sterner stuff than I am.

Thank you for these. Did I hear correctly? You had to wait a year before you got your first prosthetic? And you just got a wheelchair this past year? I live in Ireland and had my below knee amputation 1 September 2021. I was given a chair at the end of September and my first prosthetic shortly before Christmas.

Love this. If Jiu-jitsu is important to you than it is important to me. Obviously, it makes you happy. Also random doggy nose and butt are hilarious.

I can't begin to imagine what you face. But I do understand amputees. My father lost his left leg, at the knee, due to diabetes. You inspire me every time I watch a video. You. Are. AWESOMENESS.

As a person who had part of his foot removed, I’m at the point where I am begging to think getting something you had down, as apposed to 1/2 my right foot, it’s been 6 years for me. And every June my foot develops a blister under my skin, and I’m off my foot for 6 months until my foot heals. The partial foot amputation is probably the worst way, because of how your toe bones can rub under your skin. And because we get our achilles tendon modifications prevents our ability to Run, Skip, Jump, because we can rupture that tendon. So yes you loss a leg, but I think you have a much greater life than someone like myself who has a 1/2 a foot.

I am coming up on five years since my amputation (right leg BKA). Unlike your situation, mine was life or death as I was dealing with an infection on my right foot that ended up in my bloodstream. I had hit a few road blocks medically (two wound debridements, cataract surgery, and stent implantation). I am currently dealing with some mental issues that I can't take care of while looking for work (I lost my health insurance while still working for my previous employer). It's not going to be easy.
