I used this same process before on headlight lenses. The only difference is I used a lot finer grit paper and kept it wet while sanding. The buffer wheel should turn a bit slower also. Nice video this will work for sure.

I've just managed to save my only spare eyeglasses that were opaque scuffed on one lense. What I learned: 1) Having used briefly and lightly grit 2500 then more intensively 7000 grit paper, I was able to remove the coating and sand down almost removing the scratches entirely (tiny ones remain). This DOES effect the curvature of focus resulting in mild ripple distortions. Depends how skillful and/or impatient you are. It takes a lot of time. 2) If you leave the lenses in the frames, they will get scratched, i.e. paint removed if applicable. 3) At a minimum a buffing cloth will be needed to get the eyeglasses usable (for emergency use at least). I'm going to get a buffer attachment for my drill to finish off the job, but it can be done. During this process I threw everything at the lenses: toothpaste, metal polish, glass polish, Cilit Bang mould remover, vinegar and furniture polish.

Plan to work on my transition and progressive lens eye glasses. 2000 or finer on the grit. The big deal of this vid is your GARAGE ! Man, my garage is 90 degrees during the day and 80 at night with plenty of humidity. The first breath we take walking into said garage hits you like a furnace outlet. Your garage is more finished than our basement! What have you got? Must have a dedicated AirConditioning unit or be living in Alabamlaska. I just love the idea of having a garage that is useful, clean, neat and habitable.
@pusherpilot8 жыл бұрын
You are right about the garage. I added central heat and air so that i could work in the extreme weather of Louisiana. Todays heat index was 111 F. If you are considering enclosing your garage, be sure to insulate it good. You will be glad you did that

@liarschair1010 жыл бұрын
guys please don't use 320 grit sand paper on your eye wear!! you finish wood at 250-350 grit.. its glass/plastic people..you need to wet sand them..like a cars clear coat..start with 800...go all the way up to 1500 grit or even higher..your buffing time will be a fraction of the time.
@pusherpilot10 жыл бұрын
Ok, You can do as the guy above says but you will sand for much longer to remove the scratches. The whole purpose is to remove the gouge in the lens from the scratch, then buff that out. Trust me, this method works well. Thanks for your comment.
@nitramdh10 жыл бұрын
Paul Roberts You start with 350, once you sanded down the scratch then you move up on grit to wet sand it, and then you buff it.
@gatsbylight47667 жыл бұрын
Hahaha... Paul says "Trust me, this method works well"! That's why after sanding with heavy grit sandpaper, the gouge is still in the glasses ( 6:31 ) AND NOW there are also sandpaper scatches in the lens as you can also see ( 5:32 ). The ONLY difference is that the gouge is now SHINY! and the sandpaper scratches are SHINY! (But 'yes', the gouge is less noticable.) Will you have to "sand for much longer" as Paul says if you go through and the different grits of sandpaper and do the job 'properly'? Yes. And that's exactly why they invented the word 'properly'. Like anything else in life: You get out of it what you put into it..... and something about "a box of chocolates".

This way will work only if you have normal sunglasses (without any multi coating) but if there is any kind of mirror coating or MC then it will be damaged. since all the good quality glasses included mc or mc + mirror. this method will be limited . and for sure its will never work for the RX glasses since the power of the lens will change.

No need to do all of that. If you have a good buffing wheel with the right rubbing compound you can do the same thing. BTW as the gentleman below mentioned, if you do use sandpaper, do not use anything under 700 grit wet paper and work your way up. Time and patience is all that is needed and it better be some nice shades to go thru all that work as you can just buy another pair. That's why I don't get expensive sades because sooner or later thet are going to get scratched!

Only problem I can see is that most companies put their UV layer on the top of the lens (NOTE: Not Oakley who's UV is through out the entire thickness of the lens) so you've just made your sunglasses all lovely but no longer protective :-) Saved a few pounds but now have cataracts :-)
@tomsg18 жыл бұрын
I can't stand seeing this shit written all over the place. Go back to chemistry class. Glass and plastics are awful at transmitting UV light. Any "UV coating" is just a hardcoat to stop scratches and possible extend the protection into the visible spectrum. ANY kind of glass or plastic will block 90%+ of UV rays.
