The Attorney General is the leader of the Department of Justice, whose job it is to enforce Federal law. The AG is appointed by the President with the consent of the Senate. The FBI is the principal investigative arm of the DoJ. The AG is supposed to enforce Federal law fairly (according to the guidelines of the Constitution) without political prejudice. So much for how the system is SUPPOSED to work. In REALITY, the AG takes his marching orders from the top leaders of the PRESIDENT'S political party, who effectively decide who will or will not be prosecuted. The AG can only be relieved of his duties (fired) BY THE PRESIDENT (and that's NEVER gonna happen) or by IMPEACHMENT which requires a two-thirds vote of the Senate (and, with the current makeup of the Senate, that's NEVER GONNA HAPPEN, either). Bottom line: the only OTHER way Government corruption and incompetence can be gotten rid of is by direct vote of the American voters. But with MORE THAN HALF of the American people being just plain stupid as they have demonstrated themselves to be time after time over the past many years and won't vote out all these WELL-KNOWN-TO-BE corrupt politicians and their appointees, you'll NEVER get rid of the injustice brought about by our so-called two-tiered justice system. And that's why America is the way it is now, and I hold no hope for it ever changing. (I hope I'll some day be proven wrong.)

My suspicion is that DOE doesn't have complete statutory control of all the issues at play here and Hawley likely is aware of that. But that doesn't mean he has to be satisfied with the answers he's getting even if they represent the most the Secretary could accomplish within federal law. He applied constant pressure on the Secretary but didn't depart from civility once that I noticed. This is Senate governance working reasonably well.

I was really nervous to vote for him as Senator. He announced his Senate run one week after being inaugurated as Missouri's AG. I thought he should have waited a while and actually do the job for a bit before announcing that he considered the AG position a stepping stone to the Senate before he even had time to do it. I am glad to be proven wrong. He has been very effective as my Senator. I won't hesitate to vote for him for any position he decides to run for. I would love to see him as Missouri's governor.

There is a consistent and rather troubling thing that has been going on in our government for probably 3-4 decades. Professional bureaucrats, who stay in high government positions for decades, are not responding to congressional inquiries with honesty and integrity. Today, these bureaucrats, backed up by democrats and the media, are purposefully talking in circles when asked blunt direct questions by Senators or Congress people. Their obvious non answers have become somewhat routine. These bureaucrats act as though they do not have to answer questions that they feel require no answer at their whim. And they are quite correct in assuming this because there are no consequences for their actions. Never. These hearings are being held by the representatives of the people of this country. The people who are supposed to be the ones running the government through their representatives. When you have entities/people who refuse to answer or fail to answer to these representatives, then your constitutional republic is no longer a viable government. ACCOUNTABILITY MUST BE A PRIORITY!!

The largest Superfund site, in Hanford Washington, started clean up years ago and it will take decades to complete the project. Other sites like in Missouri also have to be cleaned up and those will also take years - and lots of continuous public pressure to get the cleanup going.
