It's a math solution why this works. If you can't hold 90fps, every time your fps drops the frame is delivered mid way through a refresh. It causes stutters and potentially tearing as well as the frames are out of sync. Let's assume you get dips down to 60fps, you'd be better off running capped at 45fps as this will just get a new frame every 2 refreshes instead and you won't get frames delivered between the refreshes. These are still in sync and delivered at the right time. It just means the same frame is being displayed for 2 refreshes. For MSFS it would work perfectly. Not so great for faster moving games like sim racing. But great tip!

This is a really great tip! For all it's faults the frame pacing in MSFS2024 is outstanding. Lower frame rates are much smoother than in 2020 so a locked 45fps feels fantastic. I'm locking it using the NVIDIA control panel and it works very nicely on the Q3 running through Virtual Desktop.

Exactly this. FPS is at a stage of diminishing returns. When the world moved on from 30fps to 60fps it was huge and you see a significant benefit especially for faster moving games. But honestly for me at least 60 to 120 wasn't as big a deal and beyond 120 I couldn't tell you the difference so long as it's locked. That's why I don't get as excited about frame generation. It's cool, but I'd rather have a locked 60fps than a frame generated 120 (assuming monitors, 45 or 90 for VR most often). Frametime is what people should really care about, and what developers should be targeting. Of course, competitive Fortnite players will want the extra frames where it can mean the difference between making the shot or not, but that's not me

A well timed video - confirming for me that I've got pretty much everything right - or at least that I was on the right track. Literally just finished my 9800x3D build this afternoon, repurposing my 4090 until the 5090 becomes available. And in sim, set a 45fps target (before seeing your video) - I didn't set anything different in Varjo base though (I may go back and take a look at that). Set 'High End' as my PC type in the VR tab, and left everything else as the sim suggested. Perfectly smooth and playable, right out of the gate. Now just need to redo all my bindings! And figure out a way of getting rid of all the trees from the Orkney Isles. Having a better evening than my son, who is stuck on Benbecula, unable to operate the mail flight up to Stornoway then Glasgow, as the X-wind is gusting over 50kts and the ATR72's limit is 28kts in the wet (and it is very wet)! If you fancy a challenge this evening, try flying in and out of the Outer Hebrides islands with current real weather - it's a lot of 'fun'!

I noticed this as well. I will have to try 120fps with a 30fps cap, thanks for the tip! I can hit much higher frame rates without tracking issues in dlss/performance like 45fps or hit much higher quality with dlss/dlaa without tracking issues at 28fps. Also going into the nvidia control panel program settings and adjusting the texture filtering down to performance makes a big difference.

Had my first VR flight an hour ago - a circuit in the C172 at NZHN (Hamilton, New Zealand) and tried TAA, which I always use in 2020. It went okay - there was one small phase of stuttering (while taxiing after landing), probably streaming, but otherwise very acceptable. I didn't have fpsVR running, so I don't know the framerate or time, but I will have another go tomorrow and see. I set world scale to 105% but it still seemed a bit small in the Crystal Light. Only downer was the instrument texts were not the sharpest, though still legible. Using a 7800X3D and 4080.

In FS2020 I started off at 18fps when many were non-stop complaining about how terrible VR performance was. I was even totally shocked myself, but 18fps was not only smooth, but everything looked good too, flying GA at low altitudes. I did have to double my RAM from 32GB to 64GB - even though most of it was unused, it still made a difference to stop stuttering. Unfortunately, so many just look at that number 18 and write it off as unusable or me as talking rubbish - despite the videos I uploaded showing how well it worked. You have to try thinking outside the box - sometimes the results can be surprising.

Can you humor me and try something. When you look out your window or go into 3rd person and look down at the ground when flying does the ground seem to stutter, jump quickly rather than smoothly go past you? Trying to figure out if that's just the nature of the sim or if I still haven't found the source of the issue. I've tried fresh install of windows, msfs, turning settings all the way down, locking my framerate, dlss, pretty much everything I you can find on stutters I've tried. Quest 3, 4090, 32gig DDR5, 7800x3d. Running at 2800x3000 per eye with ovr toolkit, FFR, Link cable with bitrate maxed out. No reprojection.

Via link cable and oculus debug tool to force some settings, but don’t bother wasting time, absolutely nothing comes close to comparing with Virtual Dekstop, I’ve tried link using a super expensive fiber optic link cable, and it simply doesn’t come close. Using VD you can set to 90hz and in MSFS dynamic settings for VR graphics you could set it to 45fps limit, that MAY work.

😮VR in MFS2024 is so poorly optimized that on Crystal native resolution I would need to go to some crazy low settings to have stable 45 FPS with 7800x3d and 4090. After turning down all the heavy hitters I'm between 30=40 FPS, while I was 45-55 with MFS2020.

I am rendering min 40 fps stable with 4080 super and an ancient CPU (Ryzen 7 3700X) at a lot higher resolution then crystal light native. To be exact im rendering at 3300x3600 p.e. overscaling the native resolution of my good old index by more than 200%. Here is the trick: Use DLSS 3 in performance preset! not quality use performance!. Use DLSSTweak to give the performance preset the DLSS profile "F" so it has same quality as DLAA. Then crank up your final resolution beyond native resolution of HMD. By cranking up final resolution you counter quality loss of downscaling from DLSS and using the AI algorithm of DLSS to much greater degree than using quality preset. Youre giving an image of higher resolution than its native resolution to the HMD. In its image buffer it is downscaled to native but you gain clarity. You get about same performance, but a lot better quality.

I knew that many years and was throttling fps to half refresh rate in msfs2020 already. I can explain why its working. Smoothness is not about fps at all. You can have 20 fps and smooth experience and you can have 90 fps and experience terrible stutters. Because smoothness is about frame timings. Now if you don't throttle your GPU and allow it to unleash its whole power, it will render as fast as possible and will push out the frames out of the rendering pipeline as soon as they are ready. But then you will have random frame timings all over the place, and this is what causes stutters. Because between frame 1 and frame 2 are maybe 10ms and between 2 and 4 16ms then maybe 6ms etc... Because unthrottled you get random frame timings it results in stuttering experience, your brain notices that something is fishy. To achieve smoothness it is required that timings between frames stay stable and are mostly equal. This can be realized by throttling the GPU so that it does not push out frames as fast as possible, but instead use some of the overhead power to sort them properly and equally in the rendering pipeline. You pay some framerate for smooth frame timings. Now your brain is happy. You achieve best results by using fractions of refresh rate of the display. Like 1/2, 1/3 or 1/1. So if you run your Headset at 90Hz you should throttle at 90, 45 or 30. But, you also should adopt graphics setting in a way that you are actually achieving those 45 at all times. When you have that, you can also enable reprojection, and you would not see any artifacts. The reason why people hate it, is because they use too high graphics settings unable to achieve equal frame timings. Under this conditions reprojection produces artifacts.

My latest VR settings guide related to many VR headsets. For the BSB, you can actually get better results due to its resolution being closer to baseline (less need for barrel distortion correction).

I don’t know what’s going on with Pimax I think they don’t care about the regular Pimax Crystal anymore. We haven’t had an update in forever. And I thought they were going to update the Pimax play for the regular Crystal with open XR. Haven’t seen it yet. they need to do something because my headset disconnects freezes for a second and comes back. and I’m not sure what Nvidia driver version to use with MSF 2020

Was having the same issue. I went to the device manager went to the usb devices and right clicked on them went to the power management tab and found that they were being turned off to save power. In the old FSX days this would turn off your joysticks and pretty much cause the issue. Found that most of the usb's were the same way. Go through and check them all. I have not had the issue since I made the change.

@@alwaysflying6450 I want to thank you so much. I took your advice and went to device manager and everyone of my USB power management was checked off to let the computer to turn off to save power so maybe this will fix the issue. I also noticed that my Nvidia driver, the audio needed an update so I also updated that maybe that’s why sometimes when I get into the headset and go to iRacing all my audio settings. Wasn’t getting saved . I kill two birds with one stone lol thanks again.

@@NavalTechTinkerer did you guys not think about why? The next sim needs a complete new engine. its easy possible to get 90 FPS out of that sim, they only need to do it right. Beginning with usage of multicore CPU's to process with more paralell bandwith to bring a normal 4090 to 99%. MY 3080TI does 64% and stuttering because that sim calcs on one single core or so. Absolute garbage. So done ranting for tonight. Thanks for reading, or maybe better not :). For all like upscaled resharped white edge graphics...have fun ;) IM OUT ;) OVER AND OUT ;)

Thank you for the tips, but... I have a 3090 and 14900K and I can't get a smooth 45 fps vn at low settings. I don't know what is wrong. My bottleneck is a RdrThread. Not an GPU but maybe a CPU.
@SirMLP
@SirMLP 2 ай бұрын
Something is not right there. Unless you are flying the A380x from New York! Intel CPUs are not the best for the sim, run hot, and use a lot of energy, but with 14900K should still be fine though as is a top CPU. Make sure your XMP memory profile is enabled on your bios otherwise you lose performance.( you may know that already but I still encounter so many people that does not do this simple step) I assume you have 32 GB or more of ram. My sim became very stable (not faster) but more stable after I installed 64GB of ram. No more memory runaways and deadly memory leaks!

@@SirMLP Thanks! I have 64Gb or ram XPM is 6400. I think this is a problem in the processor. I notice strange stutters in the x-plane and it can no longer hold the frequency above 5.7 GHz.

VR won't tear it awaits the next refresh. Resulting in skipping and jumping in presentation - not smooth at all. Also for those that have MQ3 - make sure to use SSW it is cleaner than pc-side ASW.

I’ve never had good results by limiting the frame rate. I find I encounter a stuttery image esp when banking/rolling the aircraft. Even if it holds a steady 45fps. This is across DCS & FS2020/4. Using ASW in the Q3 is very smooth.. I’ve never managed to figure out why it results in a stuttering image when capping fps on my system.

Oh looks like we have a troll. That's not what this video is about at all if you cared to watch, it's related to ensuring you are at the correct fps that divides neatly into your headsets refresh rate. Also, in regards to sponsors, there's no need to be jealous of the channels success now. When you work as hard as I do, there is nothing wrong with choosing respectable and well established companies that are related to flight simulation, to help support the channel. FS Academy have sponsored my content for years. I don't see anyone else complaining do you? Have a wonderful evening now..

If you have seen the sheer amount of content I've been putting out recently, I think you will see I actually DO care, probably too much about the community at times and not enough about my own free time. Sadly, you elected to quote me saying one thing; 'turn down your settings' and insinuated this is the only message of this video, without any context whatsoever about the core principles of discussing refresh rates, frame timing and why it's not always better to have a higher, 'unleashed' FPS value. I'm still waiting for this, I quote, ''fot fan hate wave'' btw. I don't see it, do you? Just lots of nice comments of support, from the many people I have helped with these tips.

The fact that 2024 using the same catastrophical engine like 2020 says to me, it can never be sweet like per example Aerofly FS4. I give a shit on worldscale.
