But then you see officers in the field in NATO training and/or joint training with Yanks and they are very down to earth.

Grand total spent, maybe $15. We would all give over our MRE's. He could work magic with those things. One deployment, we couldn't find him. Sent my people out to search for him. Found him in a mobile Army field kitchen instructing their cooks. I reminded him his place was with us. But the Army cooks expressed their gratitude and we ate with them for the duration. The Army Catering Corps does some bonkers competitions. There's the improvised stove / oven competition. Saw a guy trying to turn a filing cabinet into an oven. And there's another where try to turn a 20 man ration pack into banquets level food. That one is not a field competition. The ACC does go out to FOB and cook for the men. They aren't stationed there, there are scheduled trips to keep morale up. Probably no real cooking facilities except what they build. And they are trying to give the men a "treat". So the bonkers competitions make sense.

I served in the US Army in the 1980’s in Northern Germany and trained several times along with the Royal Green Jackets. Top notch guys and a bunch of crazies. We ate quite a few meals together our in the field and swapped food with them. Some of them actually liked some of our MRE’s and we liked some of their rations. While ours are designed for individual carry and consumption, back then theirs was designed to be carried in packs by the teams and consumed by the team together. I don’t know how they are now. But from those meals I ended up loving some of their food and eating pub food. Fun times. And I must say that today’s MRE’s are way better than those of the 1980’s. I’ve heard that some of them old ones are still kicking around and may even still be edible! I wouldn’t try them though.

We Canadians were often issued the old style US MREs so that we could get used to them in case of joint ops. lol They were of course no match for our own Canadian rations, but after a long day of humping about, hunger overrides taste and one can eat pretty much anything that is edible. A double-barrelled surname, clear private school education and all the leadership charisma of a wet sock, British Army officer selection at its default setting, how unusual.

Since this is from British forces, I assume they had editorial control. That major was plucked from ( in American's eyes) a public TV series set in another time. Downton Abbey or something from Jane Austen. RP edging into posh, even for a medical officer (is she an MD?). I have to assume the idea was to avoid a regional British accent that would throw the American lieutenants and require simultaneous translation. Unfortunately the good Major seems a bit of a stereotype, no?

She is a major in the British Army, and she is behaving like she has never, ever seen a ration pack before. Her enthusiasm is a little much....

She is the typical British officer regardless of gender. They are usually painful to listen to, and have a very weak grasp on the real world. I see nothing has changed from my time in the army!.

I was out there on that training exercise. We did an MRE swap. Theirs are so much better than ours, and their hot A's are several steps better than ours. They have real eggs.

MRE stand for "Meals Rejected by Ethiopians". That was a nickname given around the time of the 1980's Ethiopian famine. Another nickname was "Meals Rarely Edible".

If only she had the crackers in MRE's. LMFAO 😂 Little does the British Officer know, the "special" gum has a mild amount of laxative.

British rat packs also have a similar type of gum, you have to have something to let everything out
