'It's about as big as it gets'. That's the verdict of an American Commander on 'Exercise Rattlesnake' in Louisiana. They are hosting the 3rd Battalion The Rifles (3 RIFLES) who have flown 4,500 miles from Edinburgh to embed with US forces. The action has been taking place at Fort Polk, one of the top urban training environments in the world.

I also have served with Brits on a few of my deployments. A fine bunch of men and women as well as, soldiers who are knowledgeable, well trained, flexible thinkers and generally a pleasure to live with. Very proud to count them among our dwindling allies. Wish I could say the same for the government of the UK which seems to be misguided, misaligned and mistaken. Much like my own country, the US, the UK appears to be wholly undeserving of the fine young men and women who voluntarily insert themselves into harm's way representing their country and its allies effectively, efficiently, with precision, pride, indomitable courage and great bravery. All done with honor and simply brilliant senses of humor. All of you Brits can be enormously proud of the incomparably fine young men and women in your nation's service.

@Matthew Smith Strange how narratives get skewed over time. Ex. Paul Revere's ride, "The British are coming..!" He actually said "The Regulars are coming..!". He considered himself, as did all residents of the 13 colonies, British. And prior to 4th of July 1776 that is indeed what they were. Be wary of people that seem to want to re-write the narrative as they tend to have an agenda. On this subject it's relatively harmless. On other subjects, not so. Ex. 1619 Project.

Due to size, investment and structure created by the founders who were European by the way. Gives the USA it's success today. If the 13 colonies were Spanish we would not be speaking right now. And if you get a pass to go off post, you have the great metropolis of Leesville, LA, population 6000. JRTC is a great place to train. But when you're on your own time... Ugh.

I love the special relationship. Important obviously in both world wars. All the English speaking countries were allies in them of course. Except Ireland. Sat out both world wars because they hate Britain too much. Northern Ireland in world war two were very much an ally and key in helping the allies. Churchill particularly thanked northern Ireland in a post war speech. Churchill near the end of his political career advised Britain in the future to never leave her. Her being the USA. He knew there was a new sheriff in town for the future, the United states. World power and dominance, leading and carrying the flag for democracy and freedom. And we all might remember churchill's mother was American. Like mine was. Not to bore or carry on, but I do like 20th century history.

Joe Cook I think you need to do a bit of research, while Southern Ireland was neutral, many thousands of Irishmen fought with British regiments and many died in both world wars

@@douglasspencer745 oh. Didn't know. I maybe assumed some did. Don't know how a neutral country can choose a side and enlist. But anyway, good job northern Ireland. Do they at least get credit in your book? And don't get me wrong, I'm not against the Irish. People are people, all that. If I was Irish I would be all Irish, proud of it. I would hate the British because what else would I have to think about. Like al Qaeda and ISIS, take away USA hatred and they have nothing. Sad.

@@joecook5689 you clearly have no idea of the complexity of the northern Ireland issue, ...many fought for the united kingdom of great Britain and northern Ireland back then and many still do! Do us a favour lad......research 100 years of this subject and commit yourself ....then you might understand why the protestant northern irish fight under the union flag! No offence intended

Question for somebody to answer. I served in "B" Co. 1st Bn. 501st Inf.(ABN) in the 101st Airborne Div. in Vietnam '67- '68. The 501st was part of the 101st since WW-2. In this video it shows the 501st as part of the 25th Inf. Div. which is a leg division. What the hell is happening to the !01st....our unit crest used to say GERONIMO! Can someone explain?

In the restructuring to the U.S. Army regimental system, the 1st Bn, 501st Infantry was inactivated at Fort Campbell on 5 June 1984. In October 1989 the 501st Regiment was reorganized under the U.S. Army Regimental System with headquarters at Fort Richardson, Alaska. Simultaneously, 1st Bn (Abn), 501st Infantry was assigned to the 6th Infantry Division and activated at Fort Richardson. The 6th, formed when the 172nd Infantry Brigade was expanded to a division, was inactivated during the post-Cold War draw down and reverted again to the 172nd Infantry Brigade (United States). The 1st Bn (Abn), 501st Inf was made a separate battalion combat team for a short period of time, around which the 4th Brigade (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division was constructed, where it serves to this day. Of the three original parachute regiments organic or attached to the 101st Airborne Division in World War II, the 501st remains as the only unit on jump status.

Randal Wansing.....Thank you so much for your response. You apparently are very up to date on the Army and as you can see I am an old troop. I am totally confused and don't understand why the Army changed up their TO&E so radically. First, I have never even heard of the 6th ID or the 172nd Inf. Bde.! Where and when did they come from? The 173rd Abn. Bde. I'm familiar with but not the 172nd. Why would they put an airborne batt.(501) with a leg div.(25th) in the first place? I hope you understand my confusion. Ironically, when I got in country with the 101st in 1967 we (1st 501st) went to Cu Chi and spent the first month with the 25th ID at their base camp fighting in the Ho Bo woods alongside the the 3/4 Cav. and the 2/27 Wolfhounds......they were one tough group of infantrymen! Would you kindly do me a favor and tell me what ever happened to the 3rd Bn./ 325th Inf.(Abn) which I served with in the 82nd Abn. Div. before going to the 101st. Let me again thank you very much for your courtesy and response and if I can ever reciprocate in any way please let me know. John

John Bernstein the 6th Infantry was created in the 80s as part of Reagan’s build up. It was created by uniting various army units based in Alaska. It had an airborne unit for rapid deployment to Korea or other trouble spots in the pacific. The 6th stood down as part of the post Cold War draw down and the 172nd inf replaced it as the garrison for Alaska.
