I did my timing job back in October 2019 at just under 105,000 miles, using the Melling kit (which has metal chain tensioners). The timing chain in the kit looked more like the Ford OEM chain than the Dorman chain in your video (except for the odd choice of lighter colored timing links, than the usual dark color). The phasers in the kit looked like they took Ford phasers and remanned them to the updated version. I did replace the roller followers with Ford OEM (cheaper than Melling, by half), and used Engine Tech lash adjusters (the only part I went cheap with). I bought the Melling M340HV oil pump. My truck currently has under 118,000 miles. Also, I watched your videos on how to do the timing (and one from BSK garage to fill in gaps in your video), as well as downloading the Ford service manual to help with torque values and bolt sequences, among other things. The timing kit, oil pump and lash adjusters were bought from Rock Auto, the roller followers and some miscellaneous parts were bought from a Ford Dealership in Bloomington, MN in the Ford parts network.

Great video, very informative. I have an FX4 5.4T I bought new in 2005 that started having timing issues at around 130K miles. I was going to buy a full Dorman Timing kit because of the price of the parts. Luckily I saw various of you videos and they convinced me to buy original Ford cam phasers, the M360 oil pump and a matched Cloyes timing chain and tensioners set. Once the work started the tech found about 3/8” play in the crank shaft so we added a crank kit (the thrust bearing was gone and the crank was badly scored). The engine was put back together and the truck is running wonderfully. It is a great truck that hasn’t had any other issues other that mentioned above. I look forward to spending many more years with it. Thank you for taking the time to create these videos and explain in clear detail the issues that need to be addressed in order for the repairs to be reliable. I appreciate your advice!

The part about aftermarket chain quality is spot on. Recently changed the guides, tensioners and chains on my two valve Town Car. I was collecting parts and looking for bargains via online sellers and came across what I thought was a real bargain on a Cloyes chain on Amazon. Chain arrived with a "Made in China" label on the box. I emailed a photo to Cloyes customer service as I wondered if it was a counterfeit, and they confirmed that it was, in fact, a genuine Cloyes chain. I then went to one of the well known on-line Ford parts houses and purchased the Morse/genuine Ford chains. When I compared the Morse to the Cloyes, the Morse was clearly of superior build quality. I'm not meaning to bash Cloyes as their products have been considered of quality by "motor heads" for decades. The reality is, however, that, when compared, unknown quality foreign aftermarket parts show genuine Ford replacement parts to be superior. While what was shown in this video this was clearly a used dealer's throw-it-together-to-sell-it, if someone was going to do this job on their own, the $650.00 genuine Ford replacement set in the link would have ultimately saved, at least, $1,500.00.

Great job, great example to use Ford OEM timing chain kit only, not the aftermarket junk parts repair.

Another great video. My 2010 4.6 3v @ 146k miles currently sounds like this one at the end with my leaking exhaust manifold.

Brian is thorough and way better than any Ford Dealership Tech, bunch of butchers and parts swappers work at ALL Ford Dealerships, Our Gardner has a 2004 5.4 with 367K . he just had a full timing job and phasers swapped by an independent shop for $4600. man only uses Mobil 1 every 7K miles. This truck is whisper quiet with 367K miles

I work in an independent shop and I have to say that using dealer parts is a must on GM ecotec engines and a few others as well as the Ford mod engines. Shop owners don't want to pays the cost of dealer parts and pass the cost to the customer. That being said there was a F150 4.6 3 valve that came to the shop and needed a timing chin job done due to a noisy cam phaser. Anyways the boss kept wanting to try different aftermarket set including Dorman and the fit was lousy. I could not get the chain to fit without breaking something and that wasn't something I was going to do. Finally I TOLD him for the last time to order the dealership parts that I was no longer going to waste my time. At that point he saw that I wasn't no longer going to mess with it and he FINALLY ordered the complete set, chains, tensioners, guides, and phasers from the dealership and the Ford parts went on perfectly.

I had the timing done on my 07 5.4. Truck had 160k on it. Since then I do oil changes every 2000 miles and use 5w30 oil like you recommended. Have put an additional 60k miles since.

God bless you man..., you're our knowledge on Fords! If just more engineers / mechanics would be like you, at least honest as you and not greedy or a parts changer without logics.

I appreciate the awesome service work your doing and showing us that have a 5.4 triton. I had to recently unplug the ecv sensor to stop engine from stalling at very low speeds once the engine warmed up. Thanks to you we made it home.

Not tying to take anything away from what you’re saying but I’ve done MANY timing jobs on these using Cloyes kits when the customer is on a budget and have never had a problem. Never used Dorman timing kits, I sell OEM parts whenever I can. The things you’re saying make since and all but I’ve never had an issue. 🤞 With that being said, I’ve got one in the shop now and I think I might not do that this time. ✌️

I rebuilt the engine on my 2005 3v F250. I’m glad I spent the coin on OEM timing parts. 55k miles on that engine and it still runs like a top. Motorcraft filters only on these engines. FL-820s

FTM, I hope you do see this. But even if you don't, I'll have said it and that makes me feel good. I have to say thank you once again. Your work is invaluable, and I appreciate your videos very much. And seeing this particular one is very much both enlightening as well as relieving. Your 4 part 5.4L 3V timing rebuild videos were instrumental in my decision to attack my 4.6L 3V (virtually the same engine) timing problem. The right side guide blew out, due to the tensioner issue. Lesson learned. Problem was all the Ford guys I talked to say "eh, they do that, don't worry." Hmph. Anyway, if this engine's wear is not going to kill the thing, then mine is absolutely fantastic to go. Cam caps were as smooth as the cam lobes, the oil pickup wasn't near as stuffed with guide bits (how this engine didn't starve is amazing to me!), the chains weren't even stretched out but maybe 1/16th inch. At 186K, she looked near new inside there, with a little varnish of course, as I do the regular oil changes with my preference of full synthetic, or blend if I can't get synthetic, in a pinch. Point is, this particular video helps me feel better about having done the work, putting in the right parts, including the followers and adjusters too, HV pump, all Ford/Motorcraft/Ford Performance parts... and doing it right by the book with all torques and procedures... I saved some money, but more importantly I saved my '06 Mustang GT! They wanted to mechanically total her for this problem, and she's still goin' today because of your help. I can't say thank you enough. And neither can Awesome (the Mustang in question). But we'll keep tryin'! :)

Here is what I learned a long time ago. Use actual OEM for stuff that is hard/expensive to replace and cheaper stuff if it won't kill anything if it fails or if it is easy to change out. My Elantra has a OEM belt, water pump, tensioner, etc and it cost about $100 extra in parts when I had it done at 101K miles. I had the shop give me the old parts back so I could inspect and the belt was still in really good condition as was 1 of the tensioners. The water pump seemed a little floppy so was likely going to be the first part to fail. The coil pack is the first non wear item I have had to replace and it is a 2007 with 121,500 miles on it.

This is precisely why I took your advice and used only Ford parts. Recently finished a total timing job, as well as roller followers and lash adjusters, and the vct solenoids. Oh, and the melling oil pump. Followed your videos to the T and happy to say my 04 150 is running like new. My only question is, do you recommend an early oil change after this job? Similar to a break in period? Since all the new parts will probably shed some fine metal particles. Love all the videos and tips and tricks! Keep em coming!

Thank You !! Been looking at my 98 expy in the garage for 2 years so far, needs a timing set. Going to toss my new Melling parts, will get Ford. The spacing between valve covers and everything else looks impossible, thanks to your videos I’m going to try, have the cam holders n crank position tool also.
