Can yopu Bulletproof a Ford 6.4L Powerstroke diesel? Let's find out. From the years 2008, 2009, 2010, Ford used the 6.4L diesel in light and medium duty trucks.

While the 6.4L Power Stroke production run only lasted a few years, International's last engine for the Ford Super Duty proved to be a pace setter in the light duty truck market during its production. The greatest complaint from 6.4L Power Stroke owners is poor fuel economy, but the engine does have some issues that have surfaced frequently enough to be characterized as common. Regardless, the engine was considered an improvement over the 6.0L Power Stroke and suffers far less in the reliability department.
Fuel Dilution of the Engine Oil
During the active regeneration process, fuel is introduced into the exhaust stream by means of a post-injection strategy, in which fuel is injected late in the exhaust stroke so that it may exit the cylinder in its raw (or relatively so) form. This method, as opposed to the "9th injector" design that relies on a dedicated fuel injector mounted in the exhaust system, causes fuel to stick to the wall of the cylinder where it is carried into the crankcase.
Fuel dilution is a common and quite significant problem in the 6.4L Power Stroke, as diesel fuel does not provide near the lubricating properties as engine oil. But fuel dilution is also normal and to be expected from this system. In order to prevent possible damage from excessive fuel dilution, owners should check the engine oil frequency and consider changing their oil more frequently than Ford recommends. Many owners follow Ford's "Severe" maintenance schedule regardless of driving patterns, which cuts the oil change in half. If you find that the oil level in the crankcase is increasing, have your oil changed immediately.
Cylinder Washing
Cylinder washing is a concern very much related to the fuel dilution of engine oil. While the active regeneration process is in progress, fuel injected late in the exhaust stroke has a tendency to "wash" the cylinder, diluting the thin layer of protective engine oil lining the cylinder. While this hasn't been associated with any significant percentage of engine failures, it's obviously less than ideal for the longevity of the 6.4L Power Stroke.
Leaking Radiator
Leaking radiators are common and more prominent on early build engines - it seems as though the problem was addressed and eradicated in later production engines. Leaks commonly develop at the ends of the radiator where the crimps holding on the end tanks work loose overtime. New radiators do not typically develop leaks like the early design, although replacing one can be rather expensive.
Fuel-Water Separator Issues

Wire Chafing at High Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)
Cracked Exhaust Up-pipe Expansion Joints

Had the DPF and EGR deletes done when I bought the truck 10 yrs ago . I also added the inline filter kit for the rad. I do oil and fuel filter changes ever spring . Never push it hard when cold and I let it idle for a couple minutes before shut down. The truck is closing in on 300,000 kms and is smooth as silk.

I bought mine with 135K in 2014, first thing I did was take it to a diesel shop and did an EGR and DPF delete and added an SCT tuner and S&B air intake. Ran great and love the power. I had to replace the radiator because of a leak, which the stock plastic ones are known for. I did regular maintenance on it like replace calipers which is another thing the super duty trucks are known for. i did have an alternator burn up and also a Transmission Control Module burn up (I might have messed it up with trying to adjust it for tire size). At 196K I got a head gasket leak, which I was prepared for at some point. Did cab off repair and put ARP studs in and all the other normal things you'd do with a blown head gasket. I chose to have the heads pressure checked and decked to make sure they were flat and also replaced the rocker arm assemblies with new factory ones. The guy who did the repair said there was no piston damage and the rockers looked good, but he suggested I do it anyway. Since then I have another 40K on it with no troubles. I replace oil every 5K and fuel filters every 10K. Use a fuel additive to keep injectors clean too. I had a local guy do the repairs for 5K. I bought it for 20K, and put about 10K in it with the performance upgrades from the start and the cab off head gasket repair. I chalk all the other expenses up to normal maintenance that you'd have to do on any other vehicle.

@@bundysgarage Hello my brother from a different mother! :-) By the way, I live in Missouri and the state doesn't request emissions on trucks with a heavier tow/load rating. You have to pay a little more for the plates, but it's not much, so thus the EGR/DPF delete. I kept the stock exhaust section with the DPF and catalytic converter because the diesel shop said I'd never be able to sell it to a dealer without the emissions stuff on it. I'd just sell it to private party when I'm ready.

Biggest issues with the 6.4 is the emissions...obviously and the weak top end. The bottom end is pretty stout. Change the heads if necessary, APR studs and double up gaskets or pop for high end gaskets, replace the pistons with a higher quality piston, they can burn up if your eg temps get too high for too long, replace water pump with bulletproof waterpump(factory has tendency to wear through the housing), upgrade your cooling system and upper support, and pay really close attention to all your cab and body mounts, they only last around 5 years(if they wear out, your body starts to twist and shimmy in all directions putting stress on the radiator supports), get good quality composite mounts not the rubber ones. And most importantly...stay on top of maintenance and oil changes every 5k...maintenance is everything with these 6.4s...toss the factory guide in the trash. If you do a delete, do the high end delete, not the cheap block off delete. Do the full cab off/good quality uppipe replacement.

My stock 6.4 made it to 352,500 miles and the transmission went out. Deleted and tuned on a 250 hp tuner, everything stock and original except for regular maintenance. Had the original up pipes etc etc. I decided to rebuild the engine instead of bolting a brand new trans to a high mile engine. Studded, better up pipes, maxxforce 7 pistons, whole 9 yards and it’s got almost 20k, zero issues with the engine yet again. These trucks want to be maintained and treated properly, they are very particular, but when you do maintain them properly, they treat you very well in my experience. Dad owned the truck since new before me and took care of it, I adopted that care. The problems arise with abuse and hot tunes on a stock engine, and lack of maintenance. I now have a 340 hp tuner because I have the pistons and studs to support it still rocking the stock turbos and it runs like a scalded dog. Back down the tuner a couple clicks and it tows as good if not better than 6.7s I’ve driven, definitely better than stock 6.7s not deleted

It’s not a half bad engine if you’re swapping it into an older truck since that will legally allow you to delete the emissions. If you’re tune isn’t too hot as well, the engine doesn’t have much design flaws on its own. Does have some sand casting issues but that can be helped and the piston can be swapped out with a tougher aftermarket set if you feel like opening one up.

Those good running 6.4’s are few and far between. The key is a well taken care of truck from the start with proper maintenance. Unfortunately it’s hard to tell and it’s a huge gamble. Best bet would be finding a decent 6.0 that is priced right to give you room to make the necessary upgrades and addressing the issues. Issues being EGR, oil cooler, plastic water pump and head studs and replace all with the bulletproof diesel parts. Speaking from experience I’m on my second 6.0 build and working on doing the upgrades. My first build was a success and the guy I sold it to still keeps in touch and loves the truck 50k miles later post sell. He’s had zero issues, mind you it’s used as his hauler

Powerstroke is truly the best diesel engine ever put in a light duty pickup. What heavy duty engine do manufacturers put in their medium duty class 6 trucks? Cummins? No. Duramax? No International? No....the answer is powerstroke. They truly are the strongest diesels ever. I own 5 6.4 powerstrokes and the abuse they take is unreal. I have had 3 Cummins. 2 5.9s and 1 6.7. All of them blew up. The oil cooler will need replaced soon. That will suck .but one thing is for shure. I will rebuild this thing myself. Just cruise the mini van and put the 6.4. Back together the same as you tore it down.

I have an 08 F 350 with 136k miles has been full delete since warranty ended. I met a rock crawler. Told me these things need lube. According to him the fuel needs 200 cc of two-stroke fuel mix for every 16 gal. Of fuel and use a good quality diesel additive. Change the oil and filter every , 3 K MILES

A lot of this came from people putting HIGH TIMING TUNES in the truck, not changing the oil and filters properly, and driving them like a RACE CAR while hooked to 20k!! When it fails due to the abuse, return it to stock and trade it or sell it to someone cheap to get out of the situation 😂😂😂😂 Then that person blames Ford 😂😂😂😂

Motor runs like a sowing machine, no vibrations hardly at all but its putting power down, obviously do the egr/dpf removal. I know a few contractors at my work who used these as delivery vans. Cummins, Izuzu (Duramax), and the Ford Powerstroke mostly figured it out. But the Maxxforce 7s were always spending more time in the shop than on the road. Those contractors got rid of their POS Maxxforce engines. Here in Arizona I haven't seen a Maxxforce 7 or a Ford with the 6.4 in years.

Hilarious. I remember the early days of the 7.3 liter diesels when I worked at Ford. They were a nightmare. After about a decade of improvements Ford had addressed the points of failure and it became a good motor. There are a lot of 6.4s on the road. If you run a repair shop then it stands to reason that you will only see problems and that will inform your opinion of the platform. I'm a truck wholesale dealer. I've sold hundreds of the 6.4 powerstrokes. I've also sold Duramax and Cummins diesels. They all blow up if you abuse them.

NEVER BUY A FORD. I’ve been inundated one problem after the next and my truck is just 6 years old. The warranty is up and Ford refuses to fix anything despite the fact that the issues cannot have possibly been due to owner fault. Even when my engine blew at 55k they told me I was over the miles. I religiously change my oil - fully synthetic every 5k. And most of my driving is highway miles. There’s no reason why this should have happened and the people at Ford in Limerick, Pa couldn’t care less. I’ve been a loyal Ford owner through thick and thin but this one will be my last mistake.

You're wrong. Ford IS THE BEST truck brand in the world. The powerstroke diesel engine is the only heavy duty truck engine ever put in a light duty pickup. Look at all the medium duty trucks. What engine do they have? Cummins? No. Duramax? No...... The answer is powerstroke. They truly are heavy duty engines. I have 3 6.0s. 5 6.4s in my construction company. And they just can take so much abuse.
